Linger (Pt 2): Full Circle

A distant date had been set and plans had been made. The day that once felt like a million years away, was here. Stevie and Lindsey's parents, siblings and extended family flew out to San Francisco and arrived the day before the big event. Their friends were coming in droves from all over the country and everything was becoming so real. Stevie's mother helped dress Iris in her pale pink flower girl dress, Callie wore lavender and Dylan wore grey and powder blue.

Stevie sat at her dressing table, dabbing under her eyes with tissues. She couldn't stop crying. She wasn't nervous and scared like last time. She was excited, bursting with joy to finally be joined with Lindsey for the second and final time. It felt right, there was no running away. She thought of him often as she tried to get herself together enough to do her make up. She applied it carefully, meticulously enhancing her features. She took special care not to wear too much, remembering how much Lindsey liked her to look natural. She smiled, thinking of him, how he had always loved her as she was. A couple of years back, when she sat in front of her vanity in their Phoenix home, he had made her feel like the most beautiful girl in the world. Brock was her boyfriend at the time and he always loved for her to cake on her make up, dress sexy and wear a lot of perfume. She was a trophy. Though Lindsey loved to show her off, she was always much more than an object to him.

"You look beautiful" Barbara told her, entering the room her daughter was getting ready in.

"Thank you, mommy"

"How are you doing?"

"Good! I can't wait to get out there and finally say I do"

"It's been a long time coming. It better stick this time."

"It will." Stevie assured her.

"Good girl" Her mother pat her daughter's cheek lovingly. "Iris is being a typical wild two year old out there"

"Oh, I bet" Stevie chuckled.

"But Callie and Dylan are handling her well enough"

"Good. How much time do I have?"

"One hour"

"So close."

"I'm so happy for you and Lindsey. Your kids seem thrilled too. The twins have seen you guys through almost everything and now to see their parents together and working like a well oiled machine, I can almost guarantee this is a day they will never forget"

"It's amazing, isn't it?"

"It sure is" Barbara moved to help her daughter put her dress on. It was a little elaborate and over the top but she knew she deserved to go all out after over 20 years of trying to get it right. Her mother tightened the corset of her dress, pulling it until Stevie practically fainted from lack of oxygen.

"Mama, loosen it up a little. I need to breathe. I have lungs and other very valuable organs in there."

"If you can breathe to complain, you can breathe well enough to walk out there and get married." Barbara teased and Stevie rolled her eyes dramatically. "It doesn't seem too tight at all."

"Please, just a little" Stevie asked and her mother obeyed her wishes.

"Radiant" was all her mother could muster before bursting into tears.

"Thank you" Stevie said, beginning to cry again herself. Jess entered the room in his grey suit with a lily pinned to his lapel, taking in the sight before him. Mother and daughter were wrapped in a sweet embrace.

"Alright ladies, it's show time" Her father watched as she fixed her hair, retwisting a curl in her fingers. Barbara helped with her veil and she was ready to go.

The Japanese Tea Garden, their chosen venue, was breathtaking. Smiling faces greeted her, the music started and she was linked arm in arm with her father. Time flew by in a blur as she stood before Lindsey. Both had tears in their eyes, vows were said and they became locked in a passionate kiss. There were cheers and applause as they walked down the aisle, the cherry blossoms floating above them through the air. The photographer captured their smiles, their love and the intense happiness of their three children.

The reception was just as perfect as their ceremony. The kids mingled, ate enough sweets to set them at their sugar limit for the rest of their lives and the newlyweds could barely keep their hands off each other. The first dance was announced and Lindsey hopped on stage.

"What are you doing, baby?" Stevie asked, staring up at him on the high platform.

"Change of plans, Mrs Buckingham" he says with a wink. "We uh, we had a song picked out but I went behind her back. Not the best way to start a new marriage but I hope she forgives me" he says into the microphone. The guests laugh, clap and whistle in response, their brothers being the most rowdy and loud. "It seems like somebody found out we have an open bar!" More shouts. "Alright, so Stephanie, before you get the wrong idea, I know this isn't a very 'nice' song but it's the first song we ever danced to. That party was shit but you were the bright spot of my night. 1997, do you remember?"

Stevie nods. "Linger" she mouths, consumed with tears again.

"Don't cry!" He says, frowning at her.

"I'm sorry" she mouths again, throwing her hands up and he chuckles.

"So the lady guessed it! Linger. Hit it!" Lindsey jumps off stage and stands in front of Stevie, wiping her tears. The familiar opening fills her senses and they make their way to the middle of the dance floor. He wraps his arms around her and she lays her head on his shoulder. He leans down to kiss her softly.

"I love you" she whispers.

"I love you too"

If you, if you could return
Don't let it burn
Don't let it fade
I'm sure I'm not being rude
But it's just your attitude
It's tearing me apart
It's ruining every day
For me
I swore I would be true
And fellow, so did you
So why were you holding her hand?
Is that the way we stand?
Were you lying all the time?
Was it just a game to you?

Stevie begins to whisper the lyrics just as Lindsey had the night they met and he smiled.

But I'm in so deep
You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

"I couldn't have picked a worse song" he said, listening to the lines of the next verse.

"Don't say that, Linds, it's perfect" she says. "I remember that night so clearly"

"Me too. It's shocking to me that with each day I've known you, you've gotten more beautiful- and I thought you were drop dead gorgeous when I met you!"

Oh, I thought the world of you
I thought nothing could go wrong
But I was wrong, I was wrong
If you, if you could get by
Trying not to lie
Things wouldn't be so confused
And I wouldn't feel so used
But you always really knew
I just want to be with you

"Oh Lindsey..." she said, kissing him again. "This day has been perfect. I can't believe it" They go back to singing the lyrics to each other, smiling but not without a few tears.

And I'm in so deep
You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

And I'm in so deep
You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

"You're my wife" he says in disbelief.

She nods. "And you're my husband" He looks into her eyes, stroking her face.

"You look like you're thinking about something"

"I have a little something on my mind" she tells him.

"Mmm...the wedding night?" Stevie doesn't answer, laying her head back on his shoulder.

You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

The song comes to an end and he kisses her as she tangles her fingers in his short curls.

"So what was on your mind?" He asked again, curious about the silence that followed his previous question.

She bites her lip and Lindsey stares at her expectantly. She presses herself into his body and tilts her face upward to whisper in his ear. "I'm pregnant" She pulls back and he is positively beaming.

"Pregnant?" he mouths, not knowing how 'secret' her secret really was. "Again?" She nods. "Oh my God!" he exclaims, rather loudly. Even the music couldn't cover up his excitement.

"I know! What do you think?"

"This is the best wedding gift you could have given me. Ever."

"Shouldn't I be saying that to you?" she asks with a smirk and he laughs.

"Well, I'm not really sure but this is amazing, oh my god. I want to tell the world!"

"Shhhh!" She says, putting her index finger to her lips. She can't help but giggle at his wide-eyed reaction. "Not yet. Let's keep it our little secret for now"

"Deal. What should we do about the honeymoon?"

"Enjoy it. Maui is probably the best place in the world to celebrate this kind of news"

"I think you're right" he says, kissing her repeatedly.
