Just Give Me A Reason

Stevie made her way up the bumpy path, smiling at the horses in the field. She was tired, her body ached and her heart was broken but this brought her the slightest amount of joy. She had been crying to the radio.

Right from the start
You were a thief, you stole my heart
And I your willing victim
I let you see the parts of me, that weren't all that pretty
And with every touch you fixed them
Now you've been talking in your sleep
Things you never say to me
Tell me that you've had enough
Of our love, our love

Just give me a reason, just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent, and we can learn to love again
It's in the stars, it's been written in the scars on our hearts
We're not broken just bent, and we can learn to love again

Did she really tell Lindsey it was over again? The baby within her stirred and her hand went right to her belly. It was the first time she had felt the flutters; maybe it was a sign. She pressed the button for the garage door to open and slammed on her brakes, throwing the car into park. She jumps out, noticing Lindsey's car is gone. She shoves the key into the lock and pushes her way inside the house.

"Callie? Dylan?" She calls but no one answers. The kids are gone too. "Fuck" she curses.

I'm sorry I don't understand
Where all of this is coming from
I thought that we were fine (Oh we had everything)
Your head is running wild again
My dear we still have everythin'
And it's all in your mind (Yeah but this is happenin')
You've been havin' real bad dreams oh oh
You used to lie so close to me oh oh
There's nothing more than empty sheets between our love, our love
Oh our love, our love

Just give me a reason, just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent and we can learn to love again
I never stop, you're still written in the scars on my heart
You're not broken just bent and we can learn to love again

She begins to panic, her breathing becoming erratic. "I need...air"
Outside isn't much better. She stands by the fence, watching the horses play. The flutters in her belly happen again. "Oh, little one, I need to find your daddy and your big brother and sister." Walking around the property was no relief for her racing mind. It had been a few of hours since she had come back from her parents' house and she thought the worst. "Maybe he really is done with me" Stevie says aloud.

Oh tear ducts and rust
I'll fix it for us
We're collecting dust, but our love's enough
You're holding it in
You're pouring a drink
No nothing is as bad as it seems
We'll come clean

Just give me a reason just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent and we can learn to love again
It's in the stars, it's been written in the scars on our hearts
That we're not broken just bent and we can learn to love again

Stevie stood on the hill, the wind blowing her hair violently, her flowing dress pressed against the otherwise undetectable bump of her stomach. The clouds were rolling in and suddenly the heavens opened up. She stood unmoving, letting the rain drench her. Lindsey came home, ushering the kids inside the house. Spotting Stevie on the hill, he ran to her and tugged her by the shoulders into an embrace. He held her head to his chest and she began to cry.

Just give me a reason just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent and we can learn to love again
It's in the stars, it's been written in the scars on our hearts
That we're not broken just bent and we can learn to love again

Just give me a reason, just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent, and we can learn to love again
It's in the stars, it's been written in the scars on our hearts
That we're not broken just bent, and we can learn to love again

"We have to get you inside. We can't have you getting sick"

"I'm sorry" she said.

"Come inside, baby" he said, holding her hand and practically dragging her to the front door. "What were you doing out there?"

Her long blonde hair was stuck to her as well as her clothes. She was soaked through and shivering. "I've destroyed everything" she weeps. He begins pulling off her dress and undressed her, putting a robe over her body.

"We're fine"

"I broke up with you...again" she says and he pulls her into another embrace. "Maybe you're right, maybe it is my hormones. When I came back and you were gone..."

"I'm sorry I frightened you. I sent you a text message"

"I didn't check it. I think forgot my phone"

"You need to have it on you, even if it's just for emergencies. You were getting really good at texting me back."

"I know, I'm sorry"

"Don't be sorry, it's okay. We need to talk more. I shouldn't have made a decision like this without you. I shouldn't have said I didn't have to include you because you're not my wife. I feel like such an asshole. You matter to me. We are family regardless of our legal marital status. I love you, you and I have two and a half children together" he says, placing a hand on her belly. "I regret everything that has happened."

"Everything?"

"Well, all the bad stuff." He corrects.

"You still have to go?"

He nods "I've been on the phone trying to get it pushed back but Mr Hadley is really sick, Stevie. I don't know how much longer I can hold them off."

"Can we at least keep our house and visit sometimes?"

"Of course."

"I'm so scared" she says.

"I know. I know you're worried about the baby, the kids' schooling and all the details but I'm trying my hardest to make this easier for you. We will have movers come to help with our things and I'm going to meet with someone at a school there to discuss mid-year transfer. I don't want anyone to suffer because of me"

"We aren't suffering"

"Look at you, baby. You were sad, standing in the rain like someone in an Emo music video" he jokes and she manages a smile. "I have pushed you and pushed you until you just fell apart. That's no way to treat someone I love. I didn't consider how you felt, I just took the job but honestly, I feel like I don't have a choice."

"I understand that now" she says, stroking his face.

"Let's warm you up a little. I'm going to toss some pajamas in the dryer for you, for a few minutes. Are you okay alone?" She nods. "I love you. Please don't forget that"

"I won't, Linds. I love you too."

"I swear to God, Stevie, I will fix this and I will make sure all five of us are happy." He pulls out a pair of long pajama pants and a long sleeved top from one of her dresser drawers and checks to make sure she is okay with his choice. She gives him a thumbs up and he nods. Before he leaves, he blows her a kiss and she mimes catching it and placing it on her lips. He smiles at her, walking down the hallway to the laundry room. She does her best to at least blow dry her hair but her eyes are closing as she's stood at the mirror. Today has been so exhausting and she hadn't really regained her energy as of yet. Her hair was dry enough to suit her so she braided it quickly, securing it with an elastic and lay down on the bed. Within minutes, she was out like a light. Lindsey came back with pajamas in hand but stopped at the doorway. "Wake up, sweetheart. Put on your pajamas then we can go back to sleep." She nods, not really processing what he said. She was no help in getting dressed so he did all of the work, not that he was complaining. Even pregnant, she was irresistible. He pulled the covers over her and kissed her forehead. He checked on the kids, who were playing video games in Dylan's room.

"Lights out at ten, please. I know it's the weekend but your mama and I are going to bed. Don't be up too late. I'm trusting you both to be good."

"We will" they say in unison.

"I love you" he says, kissing the tops of their heads. "Good night"

"Good night, daddy" Callie says.

"Good night" Dylan echoes, barely taking his eyes from the screen.

He closes the door, trapping the noise inside as to not wake Stevie. Going back to his room, he changed his clothes and climbed in next to her. "Good night, my love" She mumbled something in her sleep and he smiled, stroking her grown out bangs back from her face.

Oh we can learn to love again
Oh we can learn to love again
Oh that we're not broken just bent and we can learn to love again
