In My Arms
Stevie had been working on a song with Lindsey's band for two weeks. The Desert Dogs never had such a pretty lead vocalist. They all knew her well as Lindsey's wife then ex wife, but had never really grasped just how talented she was despite Lindsey telling them repeatedly that she was special. She came to them in the evening and asked them to learn a song for her. She wanted it ultra stripped, a little lower; her dream was coming to a reality before her eyes. She would meet at the bassist's house with the others and go over it little by little. It was so beautiful and she knew it was near perfect. They had a gig coming up and Stevie was going to perform for the first time in over 13 years. To say she was nervous, would be an understatement. She felt nauseous as she got ready, not sure if it was the morning sickness or the impending show. She wore a beautiful black dress and straightened out her hair a little. She wore dark make up and a little lipstick, wanting to make her features really pop. Lindsey had no idea what was going to happen tonight. It had been planned out that Lindsey would do a couple songs then after a brief intermission, she would perform her song and he would follow everyone's lead and join in.
They arrived at the venue and Lindsey went off to tune his guitar up and talk to his band mates. When the guys took the stage, the Lock'd N Loaded crowd went wild. Lindsey was on fire tonight, playing like he never had before. This was going to be a beautiful night. The intermission came and Stevie told him how great he sounded and how proud of him she was. He thanked her, kissing her often and was extra flirty and lovey. The attention made her feel comforted, her nerves calming a little. The guys took the stage again and Lindsey checked his watch.
"They're too early" Lindsey said, a little irritated.
"We have a special guest tonight" The drummer announced and the crowd was already so hyped. "A little lady by the name of Stevie Nicks is performing for the first time in over 13 years!"
"Stevie?" Lindsey seemed shocked but he smiled. "Go up there, baby. You're going to be great"
"Thank you. Come with me" She took his hand and practically dragged him on stage. "Follow" she says and he nods.
The other guitarist begins to strum softly, the drums gentle and like a lullaby. It was overall very ethereal and the audience seemed to enjoy it. Lindsey came in, picking at his strings and Stevie smiled. It was really happening.
Your baby blues
So full of wonder
Your curly cues
Your contagious smile
And as I watch
You start to grow up
All I can do is hold you tight
Knowing clouds will raise up
Storms will race in
But you will be safe in my arms
Rains will pour down
Waves will crash all around
But you will be safe in my arms
Story books full of fairy tales
Kings and queens and the bluest skies
My heart is torn just in knowing
You'll someday see the truth from lies
Knowing clouds will raise up
Storms will race in
But you will be safe in my arms
Rains will pour down
Waves will crash all around
But you will be safe in my arms
Castles they might crumble
Dreams may not come true
But you are never all alone
Because I will always
Always love you
Clouds will raise up
Storms will race in
But you will be safe in my arms
Rains will pour down
Waves will crash all around
But you will be safe in my arms
The cheering was loud and Stevie felt the tears coming. It felt good to perform. Lindsey gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek, whispering in her ear. "Gorgeous, Steph. Amazing job."
"Thank you" she wept. She composed herself and spoke into the mic, "The guys and I have been working so hard on this and I just wanted to thank them for being so kind. Danny, Ted, Mike, Andrew...thank you, thank you, thank you. I haven't done something like this in so long and they really took care of me. This was a surprise for Lindsey, a special message, so I'd like to dedicate that performance to him. Thank you"
She hugs him again, more clapping and cheering from the crowd. "Thank you. I'm so proud of you" he tells her. They come off stage for another little break and she takes him aside.
"So you liked it?"
"Of course. You will have to perform with us again. We have a huge event coming up in like four months, I would love for you to join us"
"Didn't you say there are no girls in the Desert Dogs?" she asks with a smirk, her voice and mannerisms so adorable that he can barely stand it.
"Well, I did but I could make an exception"
"That's awfully sweet but I won't really be up to performing in four months."
"You don't need more practice, you were spectacular. Dive in, Steph!"
"It's not about practice"
"Then what is it, honey?"
"I'll be almost seven months pregnant by then" she says.
"We're having a baby?" he asks, tears welling up in his beautiful blue eyes. She nods and he holds her. "Your song..."
"Yes"
"You did this for me?"
"I wanted to surprise you"
"Well, I'm very surprised" he says with a chuckle.
"Is this good news?" she asks, suddenly realizing he didn't really say anything about it. She bites her lip, nervous.
"This is fantastic news! A Nicks-Buckingham baby...wow!"
"Just Buckingham, like the other two."
"Just Buckingham?"
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves" she says, seeing those little wheels turning. "I'm not ready to make this ring anything more than a promise for right now."
"No, no. I wasn't thinking that. We work great this way. I don't want to change that, I'm happy just being with you."
"Thank you"
"I want to respect your choices. I never did that before and I lost you because I didn't accept your feelings on things. We've come such a long way."
"Yes we have."
"Even after all these years..."
"I mean, I'm here, aren't I?" She jokes, trying to make light of a down conversation.
"And pregnant." He says.
"Yes, I am. Eleven, almost twelve weeks."
"How long have you been planning this performance?"
"Two weeks. The boys were sneaking off to help me practice. I had just found out and I wanted to do something extra special."
"Was I the last to know about my baby?" He jokes, kissing her and tickling her.
"No, they still don't know."
"This was a top secret mission then."
"Yes it was"
"Am I allowed to say something?"
"Of course. I want the world to know. I'm so happy." He pulls her into him, kissing the top of her head and letting her cry. She was nervous but excited and her emotions were mixing together in an odd fashion; her only reaction was to cry.
"I'm happy too. I think telling the world is going to have to start with LNL" he says. "Will you jump in on harmony? I would love to have you on stage with us again tonight"
"That would be great. Give me a minute and I will join you."
"This is just like old times" he says, kissing her forehead and going back to the stage. "That same special guest is going to join us for the rest of our set. My partner in crime, Stevie Nicks" he announces and she comes back on stage. Jared brings her a mic and tells her his daughter Maggie is here. He points her out and Stevie waves. She's practically the little girl's auntie. She is so happy she's here to see this. He begins to play the opening of the next song, but it ends up being a false start. "I'm sorry, you guys. I can't stop looking at this beautiful lady." He says and the audience chuckles. "She, uh, she just gave me some of the best news of my life so I'm finding it a little hard to concentrate."
"Tell them" Stevie says into the mic, knowing Lindsey can hear her better that way since he's wearing an in-ear monitor. She was feeling uncharacteristically bold.
"We're having another baby" he says and they both smile at each other like love struck teenagers. The crowd erupts and when it calms down Lindsey is able to begin again. "I love you, Stevie. This next one is called I'll Be"
He picks the opening notes again and looks up at Stevie, giving her a small smile. Her hand finds her belly and she is instantly filled with so much love. Tonight was so amazing.
The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful
Stop me and steal my breath
Emeralds from mountains and thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above
Stevie comes in on harmony, never once practicing this song with him other than on the radio years ago. Lindsey hears her voice and gives her the most loving look.
I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
And rain falls angry on the tin roof
As we lie awake in my bed
You're my survival, you're my living proof
My love is alive and not dead
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above
Their voices blend together so perfectly and they could have easily been transported back twenty years. He kept giving her sweet little glances and when she would put a lot of emotion in her voice, she would place a hand on her stomach. It melted him, almost making him stumble through the words. So beautiful, he thought.
I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
And I've dropped out, burned up, fought my way back from the dead
Tuned in, turned on, remembered the thing you said
I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
The greatest fan of your life
The greatest fan of your life
The song ends and Lindsey takes several steps toward Stevie, kissing her neck tenderly and burying his face in her hair. They come off stage and he looks at her, whispering "I'll be better when I'm older, I'll be the greatest fan of your life"
"Castles they might crumble; Dreams may not come true; But you are never all alone; Because I will always...Always love you" she sings back, softly and he embraces her.
"I love you. I always have and I always will"
"I love you, too, Linds."
"You have made tonight so perfect. You were up there with me, singing and having fun and my baby is in there..." he says, caressing her slender curves and she giggles. "I couldn't be happier if I tried"
"I couldn't either." She says, giving him a lingering kiss. "Lets go home" He nods his eager acceptance and goes to sort out his instruments and their next rehearsal time quickly. He has plans for her.
