A New Day
Settling back into life in Phoenix was actually very easy. It was almost as if they had never left. Dylan and Callie invited friends over to swim in the pool, play games and watch movies. Stevie and Lindsey secretly loved how hectic their home had become with all the kids over and were a little sad to see them leave. They set their focus on shopping for the nursery and setting it up just in time for their newest Buckingham to join them.
Her due date was fast approaching, only having a few days left and she was suddenly very inspired, churning out many poems and various pieces of art. This afternoon, Stevie was painting in the crystal studio with Callie. She was heavily pregnant and tired most of the time but the sun was shining and she wanted to soak it up a little bit. She wore a crochet halter top that completely exposed her belly, a long skirt and she wore no shoes. Her long blonde wavy hair was like a sheet of gold that shown in the sun. Callie was dressed in a thin strapped tank top and shorts, a couple of thin braided bracelets wrapped around one ankle, a silver ring on the second toe of her left foot and her long brown hair was piled up in a bun on her head.
"Beautiful, Calliope" Stevie tells her daughter, complimenting her work.
"Thank you mama"
"You're welcome darling" Stevie continued to paint, swaying every now and then.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Callie asks, watching her mother for a moment.
"I'm perfectly fine, honey." Stevie says with a small smile.
"How is the baby?"
"The baby is doing fabulous. She's just getting very big and very heavy"
"Oh my gosh it's a girl?"
"Shhh...I wasn't supposed to say anything! Why is it I tell you everything?" she says with a giggle.
Callie shrugs. "I don't know but I swear, I won't tell"
"Are you happy?"
"I wanted a baby sister"
"I'm glad! I'm excited too"
"I might take a break. Are you okay out here?"
"Yeah but um, will you get your daddy for me?"
"Sure, I'll send him out. I'm going to watch a movie"
"Have fun."
"I will" Callie hugs her mother and goes back inside the house, closing the sliding glass door. Stevie had been having those familiar sensations all day. They had been out there for hours and the sun was high. Maybe she just needed a break too?
"Hey, are you hungry? I can make you something"
"I'll come in, in a minute"
"Alright so what did you need? Callie told me you wanted me to come out here."
"I think I'm in labor" Stevie says.
"Should we wait it out or do we need to go?"
"Wait it out. I'm not 100 percent sure yet. It just kind of feels like it's leaning that way."
"Alright"
"You can breathe now, Linds" she says, smiling
He exhales deeply. "Okay. Is there anything I can do?"
"I don't know" she says in a shrill tone, mostly tired of the incessant questions.
"I think it's time, Steves"
"Oh, how do you know?!"
"With the twins, you were just like this. You were getting really whiny, no offense"
"None taken, I guess."
"And your water broke and we had to rush to the hospital before we had them on the side of the road"
"That was the most terrifying night of my life"
"I know but unlike the twins, this little one isn't early. There will be no c-section, no painful recovery. Everything will go great."
"Promise me you won't leave my side."
"I promise. Why don't we hit the road?"
"It doesn't hurt yet, just feeling a little uncomfortable and my water definitely hasn't broken"
"Only a matter of time. Let's go inside, have a little something to eat and we can go for a walk to get those contractions going"
"Sounds like a plan" Stevie manages a weak smile. "I won't be saying this in a few hours but I think I'm getting excited to meet Baby Buck"
"Me too" Lindsey rubs her large bump, admiring her body. "You are so beautiful"
"Thank you" she says, kissing him.
He leads her back inside. "What would you like for lunch?"
"A salad. A huge one"
He chuckles "Alright my dear" He chops her veggies and places them in a big bowl and grab the dressing she makes for herself from the fridge.
"Be generous with that" she says and he smiles, continuing to mix in her dressing until she says to stop. "Perfect" He gives it a final mix, hands her a fork and lets her go at it. "Oh my goodness, this is so good" she says. "Thank you"
"You're welcome. You're easy to please"
"I'm absolutely starving. I didn't realize how hungry I actually was"
"Eat up, you'll need your energy"
Her hand is glued to her bump, rubbing it in gentle circles. "She's not very active right now"
"She's fine"
"I know, I think she's trying to get into position. She's so low, she could fall out"
"I don't think you'll be that lucky"
"I don't think so either" she says.
"How are you feeling?"
"Crampy, tired"
"Just a short walk then?"
"Sure. Let me throw on something a little more covered up and I will meet you back here"
"I'm coming with you"
"I'm fine" She stands up and she freezes.
"Are you alright?" Lindsey asks. Stevie is holding her back, the pain finally reaching her and she feels a gush. "Steph? Oh my gosh" he says, shocked at the amount of fluid as well as its suddenness.
"I'm not fine. I'm sorry" she weeps
"Sorry?"
"I've made such a mess on our beautiful floor"
He smiles, how could she care about hand laid mosaic tile at a time like this? "It's okay, baby. I will clean it up."
"It hurts, Linds"
"I know, just breathe. You are so strong. You're doing amazing"
"I don't feel strong" she breathes
"You had twins. One baby will be a piece of cake"
"Sure" she says. "Mmmmm...hurry up" she moans.
"Be back in a little bit. I'm going to mop up the mess, per your request."
"Please don't go"
"Should we run the kids to your parents?"
"Beg them to come here, please."
"It might be faster if we dropped them off on the way to the hospital, honey."
"Fine, fine"
Lindsey wrangles the kids and rushes them to the car. Dylan hops in the back seat with his sister, staying as quiet as possible. Lindsey brought Stevie a quick change of clothes, helped her dress and brought her out to the car. After placing her inside, he got into the driver's seat. The drive seemed to take forever, there was construction all the way to Barbara and Jess's house.
"Can I do anything to help?" Callie asked softly, reaching for her mother's hand.
"Sing to me" Stevie requested. Callie couldn't think of a single song at first, flicking through her iPod for inspiration.
"Okay, um, how about this? I was waiting for so long, For a miracle to come. Everyone told me to be strong. Hold on and don't shed a tear"
"You remembered" This song was imprinted in her mind from when the twins were little. She used to sing it to them every once in a while, changing the lyrics ever so slightly from boy to girl, for her daughter. She was shocked Callie was singing it to her now.
"I do"
"Keep going, baby"
Callie nodded, holding on tightly to her mother's hand. Lindsey was in awe, even Dylan started to sing very softly, hoping no one would hear. It brought a tear to both Lindsey and Stevie.
Through the darkness and good times
I knew I'd make it through
And the world thought I had it all
But I was waiting for you
Hush now
I see a light in the sky
Oh, it's almost blinding me
I can't believe
I've been touched by an angel with love
Let the rain come down and wash away my tears
Let it fill my soul and drown my fears
Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun
A new day has come
Where it was dark now there's light
Where there was pain now there's joy
Where there was weakness, I found my strength
All in the eyes of a boy
Hush now
I see a light in the sky
Oh, it's almost blinding me
I can't believe
I've been touched by an angel with love
Let the rain come down and wash away my tears
Let it fill my soul and drown my fears
Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun
A new day has
Let the rain come down and wash away my tears
Let it fill my soul and drown my fears
Let it shatter the walls for a new, new sun
A new day has come
Ohhh, a light
Hush now
I see a light in your eyes
All in the eyes of the boy
I can't believe
I've been touched by an angel with love
I can't believe
I've been touched by an angel with love
"Beautiful" Lindsey praised, parking in Stevie's parents' driveway.
The kids got out, kissed their mother and rushed up to the door. Barbara ushered them in and waved. "Good luck" she shouted and Stevie smiled, blowing her a kiss.
"Let's go have a baby" Lindsey says excitedly, stroking her knuckles as he drives down the road to the hospital.
