CHAPTER TWO

I parked my car on the dirtied drive way of the two story level home. The house was dark, darker then the star lit sky. Locking the doors, I rubbed the hood of my black beauty, letting it know how beautiful it was. I searched in my back pack for my house keys and when I found it, I pulled it out as I opened the screen door of the enclosed porch. Walking into the porch room, I never not took the time to look at how beautiful I've decorated it. A rocking chair was set up against the wall of the house next to the entrance of the door while a hammock rocked against the wind just a few feet away from the entrance. The porch was covered by a see-throuh screen and a book shelf leaned up against the screen. I was a reader so I had to set the shelf of books in the porch. After taking one more look at the porch I unlocked the door to the house and turned the entrance hall light on. It brightened the white covered walls that were decorated with pictures of me when I was younger and Brody when he was younger.

The stairs that lead up to the second level was repainted by Brody since the painting had been peeling off when we first moved in. On the walls of the stairs as you walked up it was decorated with pictures of Brody and I before he was a vampire. A yawn escaped my mouth. I stretched a bit letting the muscles in my body loosen. My cell phone went off and I knew it was Brody making sure I was home. I answered on the second ring,

"Don't worry, I'm home." I said, not having to look at the caller I.D. to know it was him.

"Alright. Just making sure. Lock the door behind you and make sure everything is closed and locked. Double check before you do anything else." He said over the noise of the bar.

"Okay okay, I will." I answered now at the first window in the living room.

"Do it while your on the phone with me." he sternly said. I grunted as I did what he asked. After checking all windows and doors twice I confirmed it with him. He thanked me and said for me not to open the doors to anyone, no matter what.

"Uncle, you tell me this all the time. It's tattooed in my head. Plus I'm not 16." I argued.

"I don't care. I'll keep telling you. There's other creatures besides crazy humans and in order for me to know your okay is to tell you constantly. Now I've got a bar to tend. Be safe and I'll be home in a few."

"Aye aye captain." I replied sarcastically as he hung up. I know he was looking out for my well being but seriously he went over board sometimes. I made my way up the stairs of the house. I opened up the door to my room turning on the light. My king sized bed was set up in the middle of my room where a four-post canopy stood over the bed with four red colored flat panels that draped over it. The bed was covered in red silk sheets and a quilted cover was folded over the silky bedding. I threw my back pack on the side of the bed, near the night stand that was next to it. I walked over to a door that lead to my walk-in closet turning the light on. Grabbing a tank-top, sweats and panties, I slipped out of my shoes and headed for the bathroom in the hall next to my room.

After my hot shower I blow dried my hair out and let it hang down as I stared at myself in the full body mirror in my room. I was a pretty woman; long light brown hair and fair complexion. My gray eyes stared at myself in the mirror, taking in my small frame. My full red lips formed a smile. My breasts was a size 36 C not that bad and I wouldn't want them bigger. I smiled showing my straight white teeth and than sighing, "If your so pretty why are you still single?" I asked my mirror self. And one word popped into my head, Brody. Oh yeah Mr. Overprotective father figure. Great! I guess I'd be the 50-year-old virgin woman with the company of 80 cats and Brody. I slugged my shoulders as I walked over to my bed. The alarm clock on the night stand read 2:30 a.m. Snuggling in my covers I threw the whole idea of doing homework out of my head and let a tired yawn through my lips. The bar closed at 5:00 a.m. an hour before the sun shown so Brody wouldn't be here until about 6:00, enough time for him to get home before the sun fully shown. Another yawn exited my mouth. I was too damn tired to think right now. I let the darkness of sleep take me in.

The beams of light from the sun shot in perfectly as my eyes scrunched at the unwelcome sunshine. I blinked a few times before my eyes adjusted to the light. It was almost 11:30 in the morning. There was no use in ever setting my alarm I never woke up to it. I threw my covers off of me and stood up stretching out my arms and back. Saturday, I mumbled under my breath. I know everybody favored the day but I personally disliked it. It was one day closer to Sunday which meant one day of fun day. What was the use of one day being just for fun. I had to spend it at a bar full of drunken creatures and half of the guys who hit on me was because I was human. Ugh! Instead of complaining to myself I walked to the bathroom and washed my face and brushed my teeth. When I finished I walked over to Brody's room, which was closed and knocked. A small grunt but loud enough for me to hear let me know he was inside.

I ran down stairs peeking out of the window near the front door and catching Brody's truck outside. Double checking everything was something I had been use to. I wasn't in the mood to cook breakfast so I poured myself a bowl of cereal and milk, an on-the-go breakfast, and chowed down. After I was finished with breakfast I ran upstairs to grab my cellphone and with no surprise at all, I had no miss calls but I looked through my contacts and found the number I was looking for, Jamie Lefao. I quickly dialed it and waited as she picked up on the third ring,

"Hello!" she answered.

"Hey Jamie, it's Eryn." I said.

"Eryn! Oh my goodness, long time no talk to." she said with excitement in her voice.

"I know, my bad on my part. I've been so busy with homework and work. But what are you doing today?" I asked.

"Right now I'm finishing up a few touches on my designs for a fashion show but after nothing. Why? Did you want to do something?" she asked more excited at the question.

"If your not busy after we can have lunch." I said.

"Yeah . . . I'd love that. How about we meet at Skylight Diner on 34th street?"

"Sounds great. Does 2:30 sound like a good time to meet?" I asked

"Perfect. See you then?" she said and said bye as I said bye back and we both hung up. I was happy I actually got a chance to have an actual lunch with a friend. A human friend.

Jamie had been a close friend of mine since high school. We played volleyball together but she had moved my Sophomore year of high school. Her family moved to Colorado because of her grandmother being sick so she went over to take care of her. She came back for college and we bumped into each other at NYU. I was 19 then. I was suppose to hang with her before but after taking the bar tending job at Wicked I didn't have too many time for friends. Today I made an exception. I needed this part of my life, my human side, to have some sort of fun. So I wrote a note for Brody letting him know I'd be in the city for a bit and to not worry I was hanging with a friend. After I was finished writing it, I walked through the hall and slid the white piece of paper under his door and ran back to my room to get ready.

It was 2:15 when I was at the diner and I parked my black beauty on the street of New York City, just in front of the entrance of the restaurant. It was a walk way that was covered by a green tent like-top that read Skylight Diner on the side of it and the word Skylight Diner was written in blue neon lights just above the six windows of the building. I put a few quarters into the parking meter I parked next to enough for two hours and walked into the restaurant. It wasn't quite crowded but I picked a booth near the window and sat down. The day was a bit gloomy but it was what I was use to in the month of April. I had a casual look to me; flare black jeans with a button up collard shirt that was long sleeved. A tint of make-up was on my face but natural enough to actually look like I wasn't wearing any. My hair was in a pony tail and I wore flats.

She walked in at 2:35. I knew it was her because she still hadn't changed. She was still tall, almost 5'11 and her long beautiful black hair was let down past her back. Her sun kissed skin was something I was always jealous of but she was a Island girl. A Samoan Island girl. Her dark brown eyes was aware of me as I waved at her. She wore black slacks with a white button up collard shirt covered by a black blazer and her black stilettos click clacked my way. I stood up,

"Hey, so good to see you." I said, hugging her and she hugged me back,

"You too. I'm so glad you called." she said as we both sat down. She smiled a dark red lipped smile,

"You look stunning as al ways." she said.

"So do you. Your beautiful. What have you been up to?" I asked and before she could answer, a waitress with dark red hair and pretty blue eyes asked what we wanted to drink. She said water and I asked for the same. The waitress handed us our menu and walked away.

"I've been up to an internship with Cosmo. I've got one more year of it before they decide to put me on." She answered after.

"That's great. I am so happy for you. I remember you talking about wanting to be a fashion designer."

"You do? That's amazing. So how about you? What have you been up to?" she asked as the waitress came back and handed us our drinks and asked if we were ready to order. We weren't and she said just let her know as she walked away to help another table.

"I've been good. I've got one more year of school and I'm hoping to have an internship at New York Times. Right now I'm working at a b . . ." I stopped myself. I couldn't tell her I was working at a bar then she'll want to know which one and than I'd be stuck in a bind,

"I work at home." I lied. She nodded her head, "Nice. Doing what?" Alright, I didn't think she'd ask that. What the hell would I be doing home? Selling things? That was a good answer,

"Selling house items. Pretty good money. Pays the bills." I lied again. She nodded with a smile,

"That's really great. I do remember something about you liking Journalism. I'm really happy you called me. I was worried about you since I didn't have your number I thought you fell off the face of the earth." She was now scanning the menu.

"I've just been . . . Busy." I said, wanting to really say I've been hovered over by an over protective uncle. It was hard to get around anywhere. We finally order lunch as we chatted some more mostly about our career goals. She talked about her grandmother doing better since her parents were watching over her. I told her about my uncle but only about him gone missing and never being found. I was lost in the conversation. A normal human conversation with Jamie as my cell phone went off. I grabbed it from my pocket looking at the caller I.D. and sighing,

"Sorry I've gotta take this." I said as she nodded. I walked out of the diner and stood just to the side of the entrance. I answered the phone quickly,

"Hello!" I answered.

"Where are you?" Brody asked.

"In the city. Did you not read the note?"

"I did but you failed to mention where in the city you are . . . So where are you?" he asked again this time his voice stern.

"Uncle, I'm okay. I'm with an old friend. It's no big deal." I defended.

"Eryn . . . Where are you?" He asked again. I was getting irritated now. He was so ridiculous sometimes. It was daylight. I'd doubt anything could happen to me.

"I'm at the Skylight Diner." I grunted.

"I'm on my way." he sounded determined.

"You don't need to do that." I said before he thought about hanging up. He breathed a long breath of air through the phone,

"I'm coming over now to get you . . . You don't understand . . ." I cut him off my anger now surpass it's limit.

"Can you for once not be the uncle who thinks every living creature is out to kill me? Can you for once not call when I'm enjoying a life of being a damn human? Can you for once just not worry about me and worry about yourself?"

People who walked by gave me funny looks as I yelled at my phone. I was really pissed. He did this constantly, even when I was having too long of a conversation with some really sexy vampire or a shape shifter at the bar, he would be there to scare them off.

"I'm just looking out for you. Can't . . ." he try to finish but I cut him off again,

"Damnit! I'm not your damn daughter just your damn niece. So back off!" I yelled then hung up. I was breathing a bit harder then usual but I was now regretting what I had said. The words now rung through my head again and I cringed at them. My hand was shaking as I stared at the phone. I just said that . . . Those hurtful words to him. How could I? My heart sunk. No, I told myself, I was just upset. I didn't mean any of it.

[Are you sure?] A voice all of a sudden said. I turned around thinking some one was behind me. Did I just imagine that?

[No!] It came again. It's feminine sound rang through my head. I looked around again, this time alert. Who was that? There was no one around me and I was sure I heard the voice. I stood still listening out for it. It didn't come as someone tapped me on the shoulder and I jumped, coming face to face with Jamie. She jumped back,

"Oh my gosh, I'm sorry, but you were acting a bit weird from the window." she said, pointing at our table through the window. I set my hand on my beating heart, apologizing. We walked back in to pay our tab as we hugged goodbye and said we should do it again. She went the opposite way of where my car was parked as I walked over to my car checking the time on the phone. Almost 4. I got into the car and started it.

[Leaving so soon?] The woman's voice came again and I sat frozen in my car, a small headaches in the back of my head. I wasn't crazy because that time I heard it. But where was it coming from?

[Your head!] It answered.
