CHAPTER NINE
After the incident at the bar, Brody had become more aware of his surroundings and always had his ears out when he tended at the bar. Creatures came from all over just to have drinks at the bar so Brody made sure he checked every sucubus that ever walked through the door. My worries weren't really towards this sucubus woman, it was the dark powers I held inside but since the incident, the voice hadn't come back to me. It was a beautiful Tuesday morning and standing on the steps of NYU, Caine stood next to me, he liked the feeling of being in school, even though he wasn't registered to NYU, he just loved the fact of feeling human sometimes.
His first time with me, which was yesterday, he took looking after me seriously. Anyone who dared to walk up to me, even for an assignment, he'd pull me away and his excuse was that Mr. Alpha gave him orders. Today, I let him know to keep his cool and he can let his Alpha know that if he didn't keep his cool, he might as well forget Fridays date. Whatever they discussed after I told Caine this, Caine was more lenient with anyone that came up to me. I was now sitting in my History class, this time in our original class room, as Caine sat next to me. The professor questioned Caines appearance in the class room and when I said it was just for today, the professor just warned me it better be the only time. It was a long boring class, an hour to be precise but I noticed that Nate wasn't in class today. I hoped it wasn't because of what Connor did last week. Maybe it wasn't because of me at all, I was just over thinking it. After History class, Caine and I drove over to a burger bar.
Caine grabbed a booth seat as I sat across from him, a cheese burger just waiting to be eaten. I was starving. Caine eyed the burger in front of him, probably thinking the same thing. He quickly chowed in and I took a quick bite of my burger as Caine smiled,
"This is a great burger!" he said, taking another bite. I just smiled and took another bite of my burger but than something in me, like an alert alarm, made me perk up and look just a few ways at a booth, where I seen a red headed woman staring at me. At first, I thought she must have looked at me for a second but than she stared at me as I stared back. I looked away, hoping if I looked again, she wouldn't be looking at me. Nope, she was still staring. Her green eyes seemed to give me a hint of hate as I raised an eyebrow and turning my attention to Caine,
"Hey, look over there at the booth with the red head." I said and Caine slowly turned around, alert and seen what I seen. He set the hamburger down and leaned in towards me, "Connor said the sucubus had red hair. I can smell a hint of sucubus in this restaurant. I've gotta let him know we might have Penelope . . ." He stopped because I had went wide eye and from the way his nose flared, he could smell it now, the smell of the sucubus woman. The red head had stood up now and was now walking towards our booth. A smile was spread across her face and Caine quickly stood, about to attack but than he relaxed as the red head stared at him. He smiled at her as she now smiled big, her white teeth showing and Caine sat back down, scooting over for the red head. What the hell was he doing? She sat down, her fair skin having a small tan to it. She set her red painted finger nails on the table and gave me a hideous smile, my heart was now pounding.
"Eryn Green! Nice to meet you in person." she said and that voice was too familiar to me. It was the woman on the phone, this was Penelope. I can see why Connor rejected her, she plastered too much make-up on and not even that could cover the ugliness she was letting off. She wasn't really easy on the eyes. Her red curly hair was poofy and her clothes was more revealing than Melissa Jones botox. I looked at Caine, who was googling over her as if under a spell. A spell, damn, she used her charm on him. Stupid mutt, I thought to myself. She stroked his cheek as he purred into it, yeah he purred.
"This one isn't mated . . . No wonder why it's easy for him to succumb to my powers. But this isn't the one I want." she said and her stare got dark as she turned to me,
"This would all be easy if you would just die and then Connor wouldn't have a mate. I'm not here to kill you though, that would take the fun out of what I have planned for you."
"Your crazy, you know that. I don't want Connor, I'll assure you that." That was a lie. Something in me wanted Connor and the more I thought about it the more I felt like I needed him. Penelope kept the dark smile on her face,
"If you didn't want him, why didn't you reject him?" she asked.
"I . . . I have! I've told him I thought he was crazy and that I wasn't his mate." Why was I explaining this to her, she was a crazy woman. Who tries to kill someone they don't know and over a guy who totally threatened her life. She must have been desperate. She folded her hands,
"You don't reject werewolves that way sweet heart. But that doesn't matter because even if you did, he'd come back for you. I really don't see why he likes such a human like yourself. Your weak!"
Those words made me clench my fist together as I glared at her. This bitch just called me weak! If she only knew . . . Oh goodness, I was getting mad at the fact that she thought I was human. Wasn't that what I wanted, to be believed that I was human? My life was becoming more and more complicated. She snapped her finger at me as I noticed I ignored her being here at the booth,
"Excuse me . . . I'm talking here." she said and I raised an eyebrow, "At this moment, I really don't care." I said and she glared at me, "You will once I involve everyone you love. I'm more than just a sucubus, I'm a woman with jealousy and you know those are the worst types to get involved with. So were going to play a little game. It's called watch your back!" The way she said the words gave me chills and I almost felt I had to literally turn around and see who was behind me. She stood now,
"I wanted to meet in person and since your little body guard dog here is no fun, I'll make our next meeting worth the wild. Tell Connor I say hi." She strolled away as Caine looked after her, wimping. When she disappeared, Caine had snapped out of the trance and shook his head as if to make sure the trance was really off and he stared at me, "Where is she?" he asked.
"Gone! She put you under her spell and you fell like a puppy dog, no offense." I said. He scrunched his eyes and than went silent as he bowed his head down, I knew he was communicating now. With who, I didn't know. Than he looked at me,
"We've gotta head back, Connor is not in a happy mood." he said as his eyes went narrow.
"What did he say?" I asked.
"He wants me to bring you back to the house."
"I've got one more class to get to and it's important." I argued. He went silent, closed his eyes and then a few minutes later, opened them,
"He doesn't care, he said you either come with me or he'll come get you." I stood up,
"I dare him too!" I'd forgotten I was in a restaurant and noticed people staring, I slowly sat back down,
"Tell him he can go to hell!" I stared at my watch, I had an hour to spare before I had to head to my Mass Comm class. Caine went silent again and than seconds later he widen his eyes,
"He's on his way." he said and I stood,
"What? People don't take that seriously. When I throw a bluff, he's not suppose to come over here and fall for it. Damnit, lets go." I said, grabbing Caine's arm. He pulled away, "Oh no, if I go, he'll get even angrier."
"If you don't go and just leave me wondering the streets, he'll be more than angry." I bit back. The look on Caine's face showed me that I won and he followed me out of the restaurant. I was walking back to the Kimmel building, where my class was at. Caine followed, keeping up with my pace. I pushed through the crowded sidewalks. Crossing over to where Kimmel building was, I ran up the stairs and inside the building,
"Alright, do you have some cologne." I asked and he raised his eyebrows, "No. Fresh out of cologne." he sarcastically dais. I grunted. Than a woman walked by as I quickly stopped her and asked if she had some perfume, she did and I soaked myself with it. I gave it back to her, thanking her. Caine sniffed me and covered his nose, "You smell horrible."
"Exactly what I was going for. Here, could you hold my bag, I've gotta go to the girls bathroom." I said and he nodded as he tried to follow me to the bathroom, "Whoa! Where do you think your going?" I asked and he pointed at the women's bathroom,
"With you, I can't let you out of my site. He said he's about here and he's headed into the building."
"I'm just headed into the restroom, I'll be right back . . . I've got . . . Womanly things I've gotta take care of." I lied and he gave me a look of disgust,
"Okay, I'll wait here." he said and I thanked him, running to the bathroom. Now, all I needed to do was find a way to not be seen and dodge Caine.
If I was with him, psycho Alpha would find me. I put enough perfume so I could hide my scent from him. I walked into the restroom but not going in all the way. I peeked out and could see Caine waiting where he said he would but he glanced at the bathroom for a second as I ducked back and than he looked away. Now was my chance as I quickly ran behind a bigger man, big enough to cover my body. I followed behind him to the elevator, this was too easy. I watched as Caine looked at his watch and than at the bathroom again. The big man I was now on the side of, pushed the up button and we waited. The number 9 was bright as I grunted, of course it would be on the 9th floor. Caine looked at the bathroom again and finally became impatient and started walking for the bathroom. The elevator was quick as it reached the 3rd floor, come on elevator. Caine called into the bathroom for me, no answer. And when a woman came out, he probably asked her if I was in there. The woman shook her head and he swore as I laughed.
The elevator arrived as Caine now searched the crowded area, still holding my bag. This was too easy, I thought to myself and walked into the elevator with the crowd. I waited for the elevator to close as I relaxed, "Too easy!" I mumbled to myself
"Not quite!" someone said and I already knew the voice. I looked to the side of me where the big man should of been standing but instead, Connor was staring down at me. My body tensed again,
"How . . . I was covered in perfume, there was no way for you to know where I was." I said. The people in the elevator kept looking back at us. Connor raised an eyebrow,
"Sure you stink but that doesn't hide your scent." he whispered loud enough for me to hear him. I sniffed myself, I really did smell bad. That perfume stinks. I folded my hands as if I was a 2-year-old, "You have no right to tell me not to go to class." He sighed,
"Your right . . . So I'll join you for today." I looked up at him, unfolding my hand, "The hell you will!" I yelled and the people in the elevator gave me suspicious looks. I said sorry as I lowered my voice, "Our deal is that Caine comes with . . ." I started and he stopped me,
"You just try to get rid of Caine." He pointed out. Alright, he had a point there.
"Well I was just doing it so you wouldn't find me." I try to defend.
"Either way, I would have found you. We are mates and as mates, we sense each other." he said and I just glared up at him, "Well I didn't sense you being here."
"You haven't opened up to your . . . Powers!" he whispered the last part. The elevator stopped on the fifth floor, where my class room was, and a few people walked out,
"I'm not going to so call open up to it." I said, following some of the people out. He followed behind,
"We shall see. Now which is your room?" he asked. I stopped him, pulling him to the side,
"Look it here, your not walking into the classroom with me. It's only a 45 minute class so you can wait outside of the classroom." I demanded.
"Sure." he said and I smiled, that was easy. We walked to the fifth door, room 45. He stopped and I walked in. I walked over to my seat I always sat in and than my eyes widen as I watched Connor stroll on into the room, taking a seat next to me.
"I thought you said you'd wait outside?" I said through gritted teeth. His smile made me want to slap it right off.
"I lied and plus, I miss this." he said as people started to pile in. Then a pretty dark skinned girl walked in, she usually sat next to me, but she noticed Connor sitting in her seat so she sat next to him. She had a smile on her face, obviously checking him out. I kept my glare to myself and the small anger that was at the pit of my stomach. She leaned into him and asked,
"Your new here, is this your first time?" she asked. I rolled my eyes, what a whore! Oh great, I was jealous for no reason. We weren't married. I turned away and Connor answered, "Just thought I'd see how my girlfriend spends the day." he muttered and the dark skinned woman followed Connors gaze and seen me as she gave me a snobbish stare. Wow, if looks could kill I thought to myself. Connor set his arm around me,
"Right babe!" The woman rolled her eyes and just started playing with her phone. I looked at him as he smiled down at me. Even though he was creepy in ways, he was too damn sexy to ignore. Sometimes he was bipolar but his smile seemed to brighten everything that had gone wrong. I couldn't help but smile back at him. He was really adorable in ways. Now for some reason, I couldn't wait for Friday.
On the way home, Caine was a bit mad that I had dodged him but Connor let him know, through their creepy telepathy non sense, that I was with him. Connor drove my black beauty as Caine rode Connors Ducati. When we got home, Brody was home early because one of the other pack members told him what had happen. Not only was I now in deep shit for wanting to go back to school, Brody was even more pissed that I had arrived with Connor. Gina and a few of the other packs were tending to the bar and Drayden had been waiting with Brody. After telling them what happened at the burger bar, a whole bunch of unnecessary arguments broke out, mostly between Connor and Brody. This drug on for a few hours until they both agreed that I shouldn't go back.
"You can't do this Uncle." I said and he gave me a stare that would of shut me up in seconds, which it did. "Your life is in danger Eryn, how the hell do you keep going on like this? She comes to you at the burger bar and threatens you."
"It was more of a . . . A friendly threat." I answered and they both gave me evil stares. I know, I wasn't making sense but this was my life. School was my life and if I missed a day of it, I'd kill myself over it. Brody now narrowed his eyes at me,
"I'm putting my foot down, you are not to go back in the city. If I have to lock that damn door upstairs then I will."
"You can't do this. That's my life, school is my life." I fought tears that were about to form.
"It won't be your life if she gets you and kill's you. Or if your powers some how over takes you and you end up killing someone else."
"I won't let it. I won't let this so call powers of mine take me over. I don't want any of this. I didn't ask for any of this." I said, now standing and running up the stairs, not wanting anyone to see me crying. It was angry tears falling now. Everything that was happening was pissing me off. All I could do was cry. I slammed my room door, locking it. I just wanted them to leave. I wanted a life of no creatures for the moment. I knew I was acting like a child but this was my life, not theirs. I tried to wipe the tears away but they kept falling. A knock came at my door but I told who ever it was to go away. They did but minutes later, my window opened as Caine jumped inside. I glared at him,
"I'd rather not talk right now." I said. He dusted his self off as he walked over to the bed and sat down, "Then listen."
He cleared his throat, "I know how you feel, everyone is going against what you believe in. But in the end, their just here to protect you." He said and I looked away, not in the mood. He continued,
"When my parents told me I was a werewolf, I was really young, I had a normal life just being human and hanging with my human friends. I didn't want the life of a werewolf but I couldn't help it, I could feel myself changing, I was only 10. It took me a long time to get use to things but when I first met Connor, everything had changed. He was my big brother. The pack looked up to him. He was what made me except my calling." he then went silent for a second but then continued,
"Connor is the type to hide a lot of his feelings. I know he can be a bit of a goof ball but he's got his reasons."
"Oh really, because he's just as worst as my uncle. I don't really know him and he comes into my life trying to run it." I said through anger. Caine sighed,
"He does it because he doesn't want to lose you. You mean more to him than you'll ever know. That's how mates are. He would probably go Rouge if he lost you."
"Rogue? What is that?" I asked, now wiping the tears away.
"A werewolf who leaves their pack. They are usually dangerous and follow their own rules. Loners. Sometimes they turn Rouge when they lose their mates." he said and than went into thought about it. I scrunched my eyes,
"When they lose a mate?" I asked. He nodded. Then this brought me to when Connor killed a rogue, being the reason he became an Alpha.
"You said that Connor killed a Rogue. Do you know what pack the Rogue was from." Caine looked at me with some what of a hurtful look. He nodded.
"What pack." I asked persistently. He looked away,
"It's better if I didn't tell you this, it would . . ." I cut him off, "We're passed being gentle at this moment. Were past secrets. What pack?" I asked again. He looked at me,
"Our pack." he said and I raised an eyebrow, "Your pack? Did he not like the way Connor ran things? Wait, Connor wasn't Alpha until he killed the Rogue. Who was the Alpha before Connor?" I asked, this time my anticipation at it's peak. He took a deep breath,
"It was Connor's older brother . . . The rogue he had to kill."
