Chapter 23. The End Part 1.
As my eyes glance up, I see the calendar hanging on the wall above the sink. I sigh seeing it is now June 12. Cruz's birthday is in three days and he is still lying in this hospital unable to open his eyes. It's now been a little over six months and I am still unsure where the psychotic duo is. My plan to lure Kendall and Ken out didn't go as planned.
"Aubrey," I hear Travis say.
"This isn't fair. Cruz is still lying in this hospital fighting for his life. Kendall and Ken are still keeping themselves in hiding, and I still have to keep my daughter in hiding. That psycho bitch is due any day now, and I am terrified what she may do to that innocent baby. What if she looks at him and thinks he failed to get daddy with mommy?"
"Aubrey, we have no way of knowing that," he replies. I stand and begin pacing back and forth.
"Okay, well, let's think about what we do know, Travis. We know she is mentally disturbed. We know she is capable of murdering someone in broad daylight. We know this isn't the first time she went after a married man got pregnant and murdered him and his entire family because she hates to be rejected. We also know this is her fifth child and none of her other children are alive. I mean my God; she murdered her own children."
"Yes, all of that is true," he replies.
"I need to think of something to lure Kendall and Ken out. Maybe if they both believe I am done with Cruz."
"You really love your husband, even after he was unfaithful."
"Yes. Believe me, when Cruz told me what he had done, he had an affair, I didn't think I could forgive him, but I did. Being separate from Cruz is terrifying to me. There is no doubt in my heart, Cruz and I are destined to be together. Before all of this happened, we were in the process of talking about adopting a child. We wanted to adopt a boy," I say. He leans back against the wall and smiles.
"Well, maybe you're destined to adopt a boy after all, Aubrey."
"What? I can't think about adopting a baby boy right now. Not when my husband is in a coma and my daughter is in hiding from two psychos."
"Maybe your husband's son is also meant to be your son Aubrey. If you can forgive Cruz and still love him, can you love everything about him? Mateo is a part of your husband and your daughter. Can you love and accept Braylee's baby brother?" He asks before exiting the room.
"Travis, wait," I shout as I open the door and see he is gone.
"How did he get out of sight so quickly?" I ask and soon hear something falling to the floor. I turn to see Cruz's small bible along with the newspaper lying on the floor.
"Love conquers all evil. Follow your heart. 615 Lucas road. Lucas road is where that old abandoned dairy farm was. Why do I get the feeling I need to go explore what is there?"
Three days later I arrive at the old dairy farm waiting on Travis. Once I see his jeep pulling up, I exit my car. I don't know how to explain the look on his face other than bright, and peaceful.
"Travis?"
" Hello, Aubrey. I need you to know everything is going to be okay. You will have your son and you will have your husband and daughter back with you."
"How can you possibly know that, Travis?" A warm smile forms on his face.
"Because, I have faith. You need to have faith, Aubrey. You see, I once made the same mistake Cruz, made. I never got to make up for what I did, but Cruz will have his chance."
"What? I don't understand. Why didn't you get a chance to make up for what you did, Travis?"
"That isn't important right now, Aubrey. What is important is that you will have your family back. You and Cruz will have the son you're meant to have."
"Do you mean Mateo?"
"Yes, Aubrey. We both know Mateo deserves to have you as his mother and not Kendall."
"She will never let me near Mateo, Travis."
"She won't have any choice, Aubrey. It's time."
"It's time for what, Travis?" I ask and soon hear a woman screaming.
"Oh God, is that Kendall screaming?" I force my feet to run as fast as they can into the run-down building and following the screams.
"Shit, this fucking hurts," she bends over falling to her knees.
"Kendall. You need to lie on your back. Mateo is obviously wanting out."
"Son of a bitch. How the hell did you find me?"
"Does it really matter, Kendall? I think we have more important things to worry about.
"Get the hell away from me, Aubrey. You ruined everything?"
"Right. Because it was me who slept with, got pregnant by your husband knowing he has a family. Oh wait a minute."
"Shut the hell up. I knew I should have killed you like I killed all those other annoying wives."
"It's time to push, Kendall. You can threaten me later," I snap. She grabs her knees and pushes until his head crowns.
"Stop, Kendall. Mateo is choking on his cord," I say and notice the creepy grin forming on her face.
"What's the point of having a child without his father?" Her words send a chill down my spine.
"Kendall, if you don't stop pushing, Mateo will choke to death," I say and she continues to push. I look around for anything to smack her with, but find nothing.
"I don't want a child if I can't have his father," she says through gritted teeth.
"Kendall, shit, you're wanting to kill Mateo. No, I won't let you kill my son," the words escape my mouth before I can stop them.
"Your son? Now who is the delusional bitch? Mateo will never be your son, Aubrey," she snaps. I feel an overwhelming urge to stop her at any cost. My fist swings around making contact with her jaw. She falls back and I soon hear a small whimper.
"Oh, sweet Mateo. Please baby, breathe," I gently place my mouth over his and give a quick breath and soon hear a whimper.
"Oh thank God. that's it, you keep crying," I say and quickly hear someone behind me.
"Travis, Mateo needs to get to the hospital.
"Hello, Aubrey. I'm not Travis."
"Oh God, Ken."
"I'm going to need you to give me Mateo. I think you can guess how this is going to end."
"Well, Ken, I can assure how this won't end," I say as I lift Mateo towards me and grab the small gun from my back.
"I didn't think you had it in you, Aubrey."
"You would be surprised the lengths a mother is willing to go in order to protect her children."
"You're not Mateo's mother," he chuckles. I take a deep breath and squeeze the trigger.
"Want to bet I'm not?"
The next day I bring Mateo to Cruz. I place him on his father's chest and whisper in his ear. Words I pray will wake him up.
"Cruz, our son needs his father to wake up. Our daughter is waiting for her daddy.
