Chapter 22. Determined Aubrey
As the sirens blare through the town and the ambulance speeds through the streets towards the hospital, all I can concentrate on is holding Cruz's hand and pray to God, he doesn't take him from me and our daughter. Nothing else is more important than helping keep my husband alive. I think back to when we met, our wedding, our daughter being born, and even Cruz having his devastating affair and learning Kendall is pregnant.
"I know most wives would walk away, not be able to forgive such a betrayal, but I'm not most wives. I can't imagine my life without you, Cruz. Please hear my words, feel how much I still love you. I swear to you, if you stay with me, don't die, I will give you a chance to make it up to me. You can earn my trust back. In order for you to do that, you have to stay here with me and with Braylee. You are not to leave us, baby, please," I beg as I kiss his hand.
"Come on, we need to get him in there now," Frank, one of the paramedics, says as they wheel him out of the ambulance. As we rush him into the hospital and down the hall, I see Lydia without Braylee.
"Lydia, where is Braylee?"
"Aubrey, I heard what happened to Cruz. Braylee is safe with my sister. Listen to me, Kendall has lost her damn mind."
"Well, yeah, you think? She just stabbed Cruz."
"Aubrey, Kendall tried to take Braylee. Thank God my sister and her husband were there at the park with us."
"What? That bitch crossed one too many lines when it comes to my family. Lydia, I need to go back and stay with Braylee. You need to get her out of here. Take her to Texas to your aunts."
"Okay, Aubrey. She is going to want to see her father."
"I know. Damn it, this is all Kendall's fault. You tell Braylee mommy will be with daddy and I will call her as soon as I can. You tell her mommy will figure out a way to make daddy feel better."
"I will. The cops should be here anytime now, Aubrey."
"I hope they catch that red-headed psycho. But first, I really want a chance to kick her crazy ass, Lydia."
"I really want you to have a chance to kick her ass too, but we do have to remember she is pregnant," Lydia reminds me.
"You know, I have been so angry with both Cruz and Kendall for what they did, but I would never blame an innocent baby. I know he is innocent in all of this. That baby deserves a better mother than that psycho."
"I agree. He deserves to have a loving, caring, devoted mother. Someone like you, Aubrey."
"I know what you're hinting at, Lydia. Although I don't blame him, I honestly don't know if I can be involved in helping raise him, Lydia."
"Okay, well, let's think about how his life will be if Cruz doesn't make it. He will be raised by a psychotic mother who is capable of murder. She stabbed the father of her son in broad daylight in a parking lot. She just tried to kidnap your daughter. I think we need to ask what else is she capable of doing, Aubrey? What if when that baby is born, he looks like Cruz, and she snaps?"
"Oh my God, Lydia. But would she be capable of hurting her own child?"
"We know she is dangerous and lethal; can you imagine an innocent baby being raised by her?"
"Mrs. Garcia?" we hear a man's deep voice.
"Yes?"
"Is your husband awake, Mrs. Garcia.?"
"Aubrey, you need to come with me, Cruz is crashing," Dr. Martin insists."
"Lydia, you get Braylee the hell out of here. I'm not taking any chances with her life while that crazy psycho is on the lose."
"Mrs. Garcia, we really need to speak with you. Kendall Wiley isn't who you think she is. We have every reason to believe she is really Shannon Samuels."
"Who the hell is Shannon Samuels, detective Lark?"
"A deadly serial killer, Mrs. Garcia. She is wanted in five states. This is a pattern. Not only are you and your family in grave danger, but her unborn baby could also be in danger from her. If she's who we are convinced she is, this isn't her first child."
"What, how many kids does she have?"
"This is her fifth child. We hope this one will survive her. None of her other children survived."
"Dear God."
"Are you willing to help us put a stop to her, Mrs. Garcia?"
"You're damn right I am. I know exactly how to draw her out. You can use me as bait."
"That might be easier than you think. We can also use her accomplice."
"Her accomplice? Kendall has an accomplice?"
"Yes, and you know him. He's your husbands best friend," he informs me. I step back and feel my heart sinking.
"Wait, are you saying Ken Cooper is her accomplice?"
"Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. He is also her brother."
"Oh my God, he's her what?"
"You did not know, did you?" He asks and I feel sick to my stomach.
"No, I did not know Ken Cooper is that psycho's brother. How is that possible?"
"Mrs. Garcia, we believe they have been working together to scam people."
"No, wait. My husband and Ken have been best friends for years. Ken is an only child."
"Ken is not an only child. He grew up without out his sister. I guess you could say she's the black sheep of the family. Kendall, as she likes to now call herself, was in and out of several mental hospitals her entire life. She manipulated Ken into feeling sorry for her. She played on his guilt, but then he became more than willing to keep taking this twisted game a step further. We believe his obsession with you is what motivated him into wanting to keep helping his disturbed sister.
"You know Kendall is pregnant with my husband's child?"
"Yes, Mrs. Garcia, we are aware of that that."
"Wait a minute. Is there any link at all with that female who escaped more than one mental hospital? Everyone who she came in contact with never survived, including innocent children."
"You're right. We believe she is Shannon Samuels."
I'll do whatever you need me to do. I am willing to help stop her. Like I said before, you can use me as bait."
"Mrs. Garcia, you realize you will be risking your own safety?"
"I don't give a damn. That psychotic bitch nearly destroyed my entire family. She threatened my daughter, and she's pregnant with my husband's child."
"I know. If we don't find her soon, I'm worried about the safety of that unborn baby."
"So am I. We have no other choice. The only way to lure her out is to use me as bait. She hates me so much, she will do anything to get rid of me. She will risk anything to come after me."
"We will agree to allow you to help us lure her out, Mrs. Garcia, but you must follow our instructions and rules. Is that clear?"
"I will agree to do whatever it takes to make sure Kendall is no longer a threat to my family. I want to be rid of her once and for all. Your family hasn't been inflicted with her psychotic behavior, mine still is. My husband is lying in a hospital fighting for his life. Our daughter is now in hiding, and she could be capable of hurting that innocent baby all because his father kept rejecting her. She needs to be stopped at any cost and I will help stop her."
