Chapter 2
Adam's P.O.V
It's been 3 years since the plane accident that changed my life. It changed my best friend, Rachel's life so much more though. It took hers, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I miss her laugh.
I miss her smile.
I miss her sarcastic jokes and comments.
But most of all, I miss her.
Flashback
"Aww, Rachel! Don't go! You know how I feel about airplanes!" I whined. It was June, and school had just ended. We had just graduated from 6th grade, and Rachel, my best friend since we were born, was sitting on her bed, packing for her vacation to Hawaii.
"Adam! Chill! Not everyone is as paranoid as you! I'll be fine!" She said, slightly annoyed.
"But what if something happens?" I pressed.
"Nothing is going to happen." she insisted. "It's just for three weeks, I'll be back before you know it. Plus, I'll text you every single day, now that my parents bought me this cool new phone!" she insisted excitedly.
"Fine, but promise me you'll be ok." I said, still not convinced. "Our special handshake." I said.
"Of course!" she said, a smile lighting up her already beautiful face.
We did our special handshake and not a minute later her mother called her down. If she didn't leave now, she'd miss her plane.
"Bye Adam." she said pulling me into a tight hug.
"Bye Rachel." I said, hugging back. "Be careful." I insisted.
"I will." she said. Then she walked out the door. That was the last time I ever saw her.
Present
I cursed silently as that memory flashed in my mind. If only. If only she had missed her plane and had waited for the next one. If it were like that, I wouldn't still cry myself to sleep at night. I wouldn't be emo; I'd go out and have fun. She would have probably forced me to. She would be right here, sitting next to me, telling me her latest blonde joke, even if she's blonde herself.
"Hey." Drew said as he walked in.
"Hey." I said in a monotone voice.
"It doesn't help to act like you're dead yourself. She would want you to be happy and go out. I never met her, but you've told me enough to know that she would." he said
"I- I know, but, it's just-" I couldn't finish.
"It's just what?" he asked.
"When I finally realized that my feelings for Rachel went beyond that of a best friend, it was too late. By that time, she was gone..." I said, heart breaking as I did so.
"C'mon. Your mom said to tell you dinner was ready.
"Okay." I said, getting up and going downstairs.
First day of school
"Adam! Earth to Adam! Drew said as we drove to school.
"Sorry I was just-" he cut me off.
"-thinking about Rachel, I know." he finished.
We arrived at school, and went straight to the gym for the first day assembly. We took our seats and waited for our nightmare to begin. I could just imagine Rachel saying that. God! Adam you have got to stop! It's not healthy to keep thinking about her so often. I tried to convince myself.
Then Mr. Dune walked in saying 'Good morning!' and I really just was not paying attention. I dozed off until the gym's doors opened and I heard two voices.
"So nice of you to join us, Miss Anderson and Miss Newell." I heard the principal say. Wait- Anderson? That was Rachel's last name. Was, Adam. I told myself. She's gone and there are probably plenty of people out there who's last name is Anderson. I tried to get a better view, but I couldn't see them.
"Yes, it's very nice indeed. It'd be even nicer if everyone would stop staring, you nosy peeps." One of the girls's answered. I'd recognize that voice anywhere, but was it possible?
"Maybe if you came on time, like all the other students did, they wouldn't be staring at you right now." He snapped.
"Maybe if you would quit your yapping we'd already be in our seats, so you could continue your lecture and bore the school to death!" she snapped right back, and this time I saw her. It was Rachel. Was it possible? She had grown, looked like a 14 year old should. But, didn't she die? I was really confused.
"Miss Anderson, you watch your mouth!" He warned.
"You want me to watch my mouth? That's going to be a little tricky seeing as there isn't a mirror in here." she said. "Unless you carry a mirror under that wig." she continued, snickering.
When she said that, I knew right away in my heart that it really was her.
"Young lady, I don't know how your parents raised you, but when you talk to me, your PRINCIPAL," he said putting emphasis on the principal, "I demand respect. Maybe serving a few detentions with me and you'll learn to treat people with respect, with-" she cut him off.
"Principal Dune, did I ask you to take my temperature?" she asked.
"What?" he asked. "No."
"Then why are you all up in my butt?" she asked.
Yup, definitely Rachel, I thought laughing.
"Drew!" I said.
"What?" he asked, laughing.
"It's her! It's Rachel!" I said happily.
"Dude, you said she was dead, maybe she just looks-" I cut him off.
"No, I would recognize her anywhere! And not only that, Rachel's last name is Anderson, and she is the only person I know with the guts, or possibly stupidity, to do that!" I insisted.
"Are you sure?"
I nodded.
"Wow! I don't know what to say." He said.
"That's it!" He hollered. "I will not stand here and take this! Go to my office right now!" He thundered.
"Ok fine pushy." She said "Hope you don't have anything valuable in there." She called out as she walked away.
I laughed, already imagining what she was going to do.
"What? Wait." He said. She stopped, but didn't turn around. "I just met you, but it's obvious your school records weren't lying." He said.
"What did my school records say?" She pressed.
"Troublemaker, difficult, a teacher's worst nightmare." He said. "Stuff like that."
She smiled slightly, probably thinking that she knew it was true.
"So you are going to put on a little show for us." He said smiling.
"Excuse me?" she asked, obviously confused.
"You are going to sing us a song." He said.
She laughed out loud, then her face turned serious. "You were serious?" she asked, disbelieving.
"Yes, now get up there." He said, completely serious.
"When hell freezes over." She said. "Twice." She added.
"You will do as I say, or you're suspended." He warned.
"Ok then, see you in a week." She said leaving.
"Ok then, you will do it or you are expelled." He threatened.
She froze, most likely weighing out her options as her audience watched in disbelief.
Then she made up her mind. "Okay, bye then!" she said.
"What?" he asked. "You can't be serious." he pressed.
"Actually, now it's my turn to be serious. It's the first day of school, I can just transfer over to Ridgeway High, and I never have to see your ugly face ever again." she stated.
He just stood there, dumbfounded. "Later dude!" she said, leaving.
"Wait." he said. "Listen." he continued as she turned around.
"Some music producers are coming here to judge our school's talent. It's a big competion that would give our school a good reputation and name. Plus the grand prize is 5o,ooo dollars, which would be very handy. If you can sing, or if Miss Newell can, it would greatly help our school." He pleaded.
She stood there, unconvinced. "Plus, I'll give you 1,ooo dollars." he added.
She smiled. "Now we're talking." She said. "When are these dudes gonna be here?" she asked.
"Any minute now." He said and just then three men walked in. Kia and her went backstage then the curtains opened, and the intro the song started playing.

Are you aware of what
You make me feel, baby
Right now I feel invisible to you
Like I'm not real
Didn't you feel me lock my arms around you
Why'd you turn away
Here's what I have to say
I was left to cry there
Waiting outside there
Grinning with the lost stare
That's when I decided
Why should I care
Cause you weren't there
When I was scared
I was so alone
You, you need to listen
I'm startin to trip
I'm losing my grip
And I'm in this thing alone
(oh oh yeah)
Here people started getting out of their seats and closer to the stage.
Am I just some chick
You placed beside you
To take somebody's place?
When you turn around
Can you recognize my face?
You used to love me
You used to hug me
But that wasn't the case
everything wasn't ok
I was left to cry there
Waiting outside there
Grinning with a lost stare
That's when I decided...
Why should I care
Cause you weren't there when I was scared
I was so alone
You, you need to listen
I'm starting to trip
I'm losing my grip
And I'm in this thing alone
I made my was to the front of the stage. I had to talk to her.
Crying out loud
I'm crying out loud
Crying out loud
I'm crying out loud
Open your eyes
Open up wide
Why should I care
cause you weren't there when I was scared
I was so alone
Why should I care
cause you weren't there when i was scared
I was so alone
why should i care
if you dont care then i dont care
we're not going anywhere
why should i care
cause you weren't there when i was scared
i was so alone
why should i care
if you dont care then i dont care
we're not going anywhere."
She finished and thanked the audience. I made my move. As she was walking off the stage I stepped in front of her.
"Adam?" she asked and my heart jumped 1,000 miles
