Chapter 7

Kara's POV

I waited till the sun was down and then I watched as the guards looked opposite directions and jumped in and was at the door of that one house in a flash. I stepped onto the mat at the front saying Welcome and I sighed looking at it thinking about my home, our home before this happened. I tried to handle and it slid out of place from the inside of the door-frame, and into the door where it was screwed into. I opened to door glad that it was recently oiled and I stepped in only to be met with empty air. I looked up as I slide down a narrow shaft and saw a trapdoor close, and I did not want to see what beheld me at the bottom. I dug my nails into the side creating a large, loud screech that rattled my bones, and more than likely woke everyone in the house up. I came to a stop maybe halfway down, and I looked down and saw a rectangle of light coming from the bottom. I looked up and saw the slight curve before the trap-door's top, and I un-latched my claws from the right side of the shaft and buried them in the metal behind me.

Then I un-latched my claws from the left side and buried them in the right side as I turned myself around, and then once I was all the way around I unlatched them both due to my left arm being twisted at a strange angle, and my left being uncomfortable on the right side of the shaft and I quickly dug them both into the metal below me as I lay on my belly, and then I slowly made my way up the shaft. Trying to make as little noise as I could so that I either tricked them into going back to bed, thinking it was a false alarm, or...I was interrupted by a thump on the trapdoor three feet above me, and within arms reach, and the front door closed. I waited for the steps to fade into the distance. Then I cut a small hole into the door, and breathed in the outside air deeply to get a scent of what lay above. I didn't need to breathe anymore, but when I did it was so that I could gather information about prey and other things around me that may be threatening. I smelled human, two scents intertwined wafting from the small cut, and I growled making the sound go through the entire shaft, and still I waited.

After half an hour of waiting in the shaft with the claws of my feet having cut through my shoes and into the metal under me, and my hands also under me dug into the metal as I sat there bunched up ready to spring once someone, or the two moved in to see, or try to see if they had gotten something...or me I'm guessing. I heard one sigh and get up.

"This is taking forever, are you sure that we caught her?" it was my father 'it could've been just some random zombie that managed to get in"

"Yeah and a regular zombie opened the five pound wood door without a sound or a growl at all?" a second, the one that I didn't recognize said and my father didn't answer due to probable shock. Until three minutes later anyways.

"Did you check the cameras in the shaft? Did you go to the basement and check the pit?" he finally said and I smiled

"Yes and yes" the other person said "but the camera's didn't show anything other than fuzz and the ones that were active were dark"

"Did you activate the lights I put on them" my dad said and I was impressed that he had thought of that, and it seems like the other guy was confused as well. Their steps faded into a back-room somewhere, and I took my chance. I tore off the trap door's cap and I listened due to it being loud only to hear them arguing about controls and settings, and loudly too. I set the cap back down not caring about the fact that it was a little louder than I wanted it to be.

I heard the man walking off somewhere, seemingly below me, and I quickly looked around for a place to go, he was going to be turning on the camera's light, and there wasn't much places to go in this shaft. I unlatched my claws from the shaft wall and fell to the bottom about seven feet down, landing without a sound, thankfully. Must've been my predatory body and instincts driving me once again. I then just started moving, he said that there were a few cameras where the cameras didn't work, so I just needed to find a shaft with one in it.

I heard scratching in the shaft, and it wasn't me, nor my father, or the cameras, or the other person. I stopped and listened, breathing, a heartbeat, very small and fast too, must be a rat or something. I'll deal with it if it happens to get in my way or try to attack me. I kept on clawling forwards silently, listening to my senses. There were a couple of heat forms, the rats, but they were mutated, bigger than normal, and they were all coming towards me. I came to a section that split down, up, kept on going forwards, and either side.

I didn't know if I was underground or something but over all of the turns, and leaps, I must've been somewhere near where I wanted to be at. I looked through the shaft and I saw glowing red eyes, great, they found me. I looked to either side, above, behind, and below to find that they were everywhere else but below me. I guess that was the only place left for me to go then. I grabbed my knife from my pocket, the one my father had given me, and I shifted the pack on my back, thankfully it was slim enough that I didn't have to leave it behind as I traveled through the shaft.

I went over the vent down, tricking the rats into thinking that they had me trapped, and I let my feet slip on the edge, causing me to fall into the shaft, but I was ready for them. The five immediately rushed forwards, and I sank my left hand claws into the metal of the shaft slowing my fall, and I readied the knife in my other hand as they jumped over the edge. Probably expecting fresh, dead prey, not their prey hanging from the side with a trap at the ready. The one from the above shaft fell first, hoping to get there before the others, to have more food perhaps.

It was the first victim of the blade of my knife as it cut through it's entire underside, from throat to tail, and it was dead before hitting the bottom, sadly not without a screech warning the others of a hunter in their midst. Another decided to jump anyways, and while I was distracted with gutting that one the other two were smarter and sank their claws into the sides of the shaft as they made their way down to me. The one directly above me, from the left side of the shaft above, lept down the shaft at me, but I switched sides on it, and decapitated it with my claws, and then stabbed the other in the face with my knife as the other one's head and body fell to the other corpses below.

I wrenched out the knife that was pinning the last rat's head to the wall of the shaft, and it's body fell as well while I climbed back up the shaft and went into the forwards path. the thump of the last body was oddly satisfying, and I was feeling a rush throughout my body, the rush of the hunt maybe, or was it a rush from killing? I didn't really care, but I did care about finding a way out of here now, I have been in here for too long, and surely they would've sent something in after me already if they'd seen me going through the shaft.

Finally another drop appeared and at the bottom of this one there was a grate, finally an escape, I jumped down without a thought, breaking through the grate and catching it as we both fell downwards. I landed without a sound, the grate in my left hand, my knife in my other, and I set the grate against a near-by wall and looked around. Then the lights came on and I realized that I was in a sort of room, with no door. Instead there was a giant panel of glass leading to what seemed like a hallway of sorts.

I growled with frustration and then all of the sudden the lights turned on in the hall, at least they seemed to be in the distance, I looked around frantically. There was a bed in the right back corner of the room, but the bottom was completely open to everything and the sheets weren't big enough or long enough to cover me completely. The vent was too high to jump up to, and I didn't want to climb up the walls because it would be obvious that there was something here, and now that thing was loose in the vents. And I did not want to find out their security measures for things in the vents if they were keeping things in solitary metal walled rooms with no way out and one giant window to look into.

I growled and walked up to the window, they were coming to my left and it seemed that they were maybe a hundred feet away, I looked at my claws and then put the tip of my pointer finger onto the glass, and dragged it right. Yes, a small cut appeared wherever the nail dragged across, thank you new body.

I made a line across the top, and then bottom, and to bad lines connecting the two, and then I stepped back, hopefully if I put enough force behind it the pane that I made would disconnect from the rest of the wall and I would be out. It wasn't ideal as there could be another person, with a gun, but I've already figured out that I can't die, as long as one doesn't go into my head anyways...I think.

They seem to have stopped at fifty feet away and I was starting to get a little frustrated, just get over here already so I can knock you out with a square of whatever material the glass wall was made of. It wasn't normal glass that's for sure. The lights were starting to come closer, and finally something stepped into my view and the light of my cell came on, but my eyes just adjusted to it within milliseconds, and I wasn't blinded, unlike the thing in the cell across from me. It had yellow eyes, a male, very muscled, and it was roaring at me. It rammed into the glass, making the entire thing ripple, before returning to normal.

"Ha!" a voice suddenly echoed "there's no way your going to get out of that, even if you are the highest on the zombie scale, being the worst zombie to see during day-time, you are still no match for this wall, stupid Dayreaper"

"Um, why is that sir?" another voice sounded, younger, seemingly inexperienced enough for this kind of thing.

"Well these specialized glass walls have been engineered to survive a blast from a C4 charge" the firs one said and I rolled my eyes, he said survive, not withstand. Stupid arrogant people, not knowing what their talking about.

"Um, sir" the younger one said again and I saw a hand pointing at the lines along the glass of my cell. I smiled as they came into view looking at the square carved into the pane, and not the thing behind it. I rushed forwards at a speed that they wouldn't even be able to fathom, then after flipping through the air mid-leap, my feet slamming into the center of the square that I made. The entire square just slid out of place, and I flew through the hole with them both looking at me in shock.

The square hit the cocky one and the younger one could do nothing but stare at me as I stood up, brushed myself off and looked at him and then the unconscious one laying against the glass of the other cell with the square of glass from my 'cell' laying atop him. I looked at the younger one and then pointed over my shoulder at the unconscious soldier with my thumb.

"Obviously he's lying" I said and the younger soldier lifted a gun to me, but he was shaking so badly that I feared the only reason the gun would actually go off was from hitting the ground. I moved to the side and pushed away his hand, before gripping his throat lightly, as to not cut him. I did not want a human Doe.

"Y-you t-talk" he gasped and I cocked my head at him.

"Okay. So?" I looked at him curiously, and he just gaped and didn't say anything else, and just as it looked like he was going to say something else, I just moved him aside, well, more like accidentally threw him to the side. Making him hit his head on the wall and go unconscious like the other guy. Then I took their weapons, putting the pistols in my pack, as well as the knives, and, surprisingly, food that they had on them. Then I took the older, cocky guy's rifle, and left the younger one's alone, I mean I did take the mag out of it, but I left him the rifle, more than likely loaded with a bullet in the chamber on safety as it should be, and I also left a knife in the middle of them just in case they didn't want to use the gun.

I don't know why I didn't just take everything, but I didn't feel like being mean. I just wanted to one, get out of here, and two, look around for a bit. Now that I think about it, those two things kind of contradict the other...whatever.

After I tied their hands and feet with their own zip-ties, I started to walk in the direction that they'd come. Thinking about why they were so dekked out in all of that stuff, armor, rifles, pistols, I mean they were a small army in these times. Able to take out an entire group, and two, even if one is inexperienced, and the other stupid, were more than enough to take out a camp.

I walked through the halls looking at all of the cells, stopping at some, and walking past others. The ones that caught my attention were the people, all of them were women, and they had black hair like me, and black nails, and lithe muscles, but the only difference was the fact that they had purple eyes, to my obsidian ones. I was walking by one of their dark cells when I heard a small voice from behind me.

"Help us"

I am SOOOOOOO sorry for not updating in a LOOOONG while for all of you that were reading this. I got caught up in other books, then school work, which is still bugging me even through this COVID-19 crap, but other than that. I was just SUPER LAZY and for some reason I got Writer's Block every time I even so much as looked at this book, still happens a little actually, so I hope that you enjoyed this chapter and I'll try to write the next one and have it out sooner than last time.
