Chapter 5

I wondered what would've happened if I actually bit him, other then draining him of his life and destroying the others around him, and I went over and checked everyone else and I saw nothing so it was only contagious if someone touched the wound with another open wound, was stabbed by my nails, and by romantic contact. I left him there and shot over to where the deer was and stopped, I saw that the guy was gone, good, but the deer's fur was turning black, and the head was ashy and grey. I lent against a tree part horrified, and part curious to what this would do.

Then the deer blinked, it's eyes literally closed and opened like it was seeing the things around it for it's first time. I pushed off from the tree and circled it as it slowly, shakily stood seemingly not caring about the arrow in it's leg, and stayed still like it knew the higher power in the area around it. I heard and smelled a squirrel near-by, and it was in my hands in a second and I held the scrambling creature in-front of the 'dead' deer with interest, and like I thought. The Squirrel was no more, having been relieved of it's head, and then torn to pieces on the ground in seconds from the now savage doe.

I frowned, I didn't want this to happen every-time I made a kill, but I went for another squirrel anyways and held it in-front of the deer, but this time as it went for it I tried to command it.

"No" was all I had to say for it to stop three inches from it's target and the poor creature was having a heart attack...quite literally too "slowly" I said and it opened it's mouth and ripped it in half, allowing all the internal organs to be freed from the confinement of the squirrels body and onto the ground.

The deer then tore at those hungrily as I held the bloody, wheezing squirrel in my hands as its life slowly ebbed away, and I decided to end it's suffering and I cut it's head off. Then dropped the top half of the body to join it's other half in the bloody heap. I went over the the side of the doe, and I got on it's back wondering if I could ride it. It didn't seem to notice, or it didn't care because it continued to tear at the bloody remains, and once it was done I watched as it seemed to look around. Everywhere but at me, and I was confused. I got off and went to the front of it and it looked at the ground as I came in-front of it.

"Look at me" I said and it's head came up slightly to look at my feet.

"Look at my eyes" I watched as it shakily looked into my eyes, and I saw fear in them. How was a creature that had just died have fear, and did it have a purpose anymore, and if it did what was it? To obey it's master, it's maker? Or to roam the earth eternally until it's life was ended a second time?

I cringed, this was too much like the vampire movies that I've seen, and I stroked it's head seemingly making it calm down. Then it did something that I didn't expect, she put her head against my chest, her bloodied snout staining the lower half of my shirt. I put my head on it and stepped back to feel something wet on my lower shirt, I looked down to see the blood and I sighed. I wasn't grossed out by it anymore since my true instincts came in, but I tried to brush it off with my hand and growled as that only smeared it and stained my hand.

I saw brown-black fur and a black tongue and I realized that the doe was trying to help, but it wasn't, and I just took off my shirt happy that it didn't soak my pants, and I threw it aside and went in my pack, before putting on another shirt and looking at the doe in annoyance. It looked at the ground in shame, and I sighed. Even in death these creatures are so cute, and I lifted it's head up and smiled.

"It's fine, you didn't know that it'd happen, but next time you eat, don't hug me unless it's on purpose for some reason okay" I said and it nodded, and I pointed further into the forest "now go and destroy zombies and bad humans, eat only those, and behead them once done so. I shall call for you when you are needed, Doe." It looked at me in silence before blinking and turning away from me and dashing into the woods. I picked up my pack again and stalked through the forest thinking about what had just happened.

Daniel's POV

I was driving back with the others when something came running from the woods and into the street before standing there and waving their arms. Definitely not zombie character, I slammed on the brakes and there was another screech as the others behind us slammed on their brakes as well. We had found another well kept truck that we were going to bring back to camp to fix up, armor, and weaponize before coming out and exploring again. I immediately got out of the truck with my rifle out and aimed on the person, and he got to his knees and then his hands muttering something incoherently, rocking back and forth.

I went closer and I recognized him, Rory. He was one of our main fresh meat providers for other things that he needed, like more material for arrows or clothing and things like that. I lowered my rifle and went to pick him up, but he suddenly lept at me and pinned me to the ground by my shoulders, a shot rang out and he fell to the side. I quickly got up and grabbed my rifle before aiming at him as he groaned on the floor in pain, and I pushed him down with my foot and he yelled in pain as I pushed down on his injured shoulder with a bullet gone through it. I pushed the collar of his shirt down to reveal webs of black going from the middle of his neck up to his chin and down to his shoulder and mid chest meeting together from the other side. I was horrified, what could've cause this, and then I remembered the same thing happened to Hobbs' arms after the infected girls' nails pierced his skin.

"What's happened to him?" I heard Harley ask and I turned to her and sighed

"I think that he's been infected by Steve's so called daughter" I said and he gasped in shock. There was crying behind me and I turned around with my rifle pointed at him and saw him shaking from sobs, and he looked at me with tear-filled, graying eyes.

"Please help me" he whimpered and shuffled closer "please--" he was cut off mid-sentence with a twisted-shocked look on his face, and then his head slid off from his neck. I immediately aimed my gun at the forest as I backed up slowly to the others. I looked back to make sure non of them were hurt and they were doing the exact same thing that I was. We all stood silently aiming into the forest for another minute before we noticed the sun going down, and I saw a pair of yellow eyes in the forest.

"Shit" I cursed and ran to the drivers seat "everyone in the car!" I didn't even wait for the door to close before I was racing over Rory's dead body and down the abandoned main road. A Dayreaper? Here? That wasn't a good sign. Who was it hunting? What was it after? So many questions were going through my head that I didn't hear the radio until Dawn screamed through it.

"HEY!" she yelled and I was thrown from my thoughts, I grabbed the thing and pushed the button on the side

"What?" I answered

"What did you see back there?" she said and Steve looked at me from the passenger seat with interest and confusion.

"There was a Dayreaper in the woods" I said and the radio was silent for a second before it buzzed again

"What could've it been after?" She asked and I shrugged, and immediately felt embarrassed from it because she couldn't see any body movement if she was in the other truck, and I pushed the button down again.

"I don't know, but whatever it is I hope it's not going to come after us" I said and there was a hum of agreement from the other side of the line.

"Where to?" Steve asked and I glanced at him and then the road

"Our main base" I said and his face turned into fear and regret "don't worry, we have less people and pretty much no punks like the base you were enslaved to, and actually you would be a great help for us"

"Why?" I looked at him and smiled

"Because we've needed a doctor, an actual doctor for some time now" I said and he nodded and relaxed, and then turned to me with a confused look.

"What's a Dayreaper?" he asked and I frowned

"The highest form of zombie out there, or so we thought until your daughter showed up" I said and he looked at his feet "the only thing Dayreapers want is power and they will do anything to keep it, they are smart and keep some of their minds after the change, unlike the regular zombies that we see all the time, but they are the muscle of the zombie faction. Being made of power and pain so that they can keep their faction, but because of it. They are slow and often uncoordinated, fast if they are smart enough to train themselves, but will still be beaten by Nightcrawlers if they aren't careful.

"Nightcrawlers are just under them, being only active at night, but you don't want to run into a feral one because the second you see their purple eyes, you would most likely already be dead or dying from wounds that you didn't feel before. Though they have probably the most brains and smarts after the change, especially during hunting and strategic positions in life. I've had one as a friend actually, and they are very loyal if you manage to befriend one.

But it takes a long time for them to trust you, and even a small thing could cause that trust to become non-existent and they'll tear out your throat without a second thought. I think that they should be above Dayreapers as they grow stronger during full moons and when they're injured, Dayreapers just have really, really, really hard skin, and lots of muscle. It seems that they almost are because I'm seeing more Nightcrawlers than Dayreapers recently. Maybe the Dayreapers are dying off, maybe their all in hiding, maybe they are being killed off...either way it's good for us. The other zombies are just regular dummies being the walkers, crawlers, and runners, which I haven't seen recently either."

"Wow" Steve said holding his head "so what's my daughter then because she's nothing like the Dayreaper or Nightcrawler?"

"Yeah" I said "it confuses me as well, but if she's trailing us like I think she is, then she'll say something soon enough" and the rest of the car-ride went by in silence, until we reached the metal gates of our humble home, and the sounds of cheering and greetings were heard throughout as we drove through our little village.
