Your POV

I sat on my board with my golden retriever sitting close to the end. I watched as the sun rose over the water. I could hear nothing over the sound of the waves. And I couldn't care less. It was in the middle of June, so I didn't have school on this beautiful LA morning. I lived in a beach house with my dad and golden retriever, Max.

I was pretty far into the ocean, not to far, but just far enough where no dangerous waves formed. I mean I loved surfing in the early morning, but on this certain day, I just decided to sit and watch the sunset. Today was my mother's birthday. She would always sit on the water with me every morning on her birthday, but three years ago she lost her life due to breast cancer. I missed her dearly, but I promised her that I wouldn't dwell on the negative side of her death. I know that she's now cancer free and living happily.

When the sun was almost midway to midday, I started paddling towards the shore. I looked behind me and saw a good wave forming, then immediately decided to surf on one wave before going inside. I paddled until I thought it was ok to stand up and surfed all the way to shore, with my dog Max. I made it to the shallow water and jumped off of my board. I picked it up once Max jumped off and walked to the sand. I put my board down next to my stuff and took off the velcro strap from around my ankle.

Suddenly Max started barking and ran off. I sighed and ran after him.

"Max! Here boy!" I shouted chasing after him. I laughed as he ran up to a boy with extremely curly hair.

"Max" I said, with my hands on my hips as the really attractive boy was petting him.

"I'm guessing he's yours?" The boy looked up and I immediately noticed his golden brown eyes.

"Yeah" I said bending down to pet Max as well.

"He's a beautiful dog" I smiled and continued petting him.

"His owner is pretty cute too" I looked up at him, shock evident on my face. He was looking at me and smiling. I laughed and looked down.

"Thanks" I looked up.

"You're not so bad yourself" he laughed, me joining with him. I stood up, him following me. He stuck out his hand for me to shake.

"I'm Jack" I smiled and shook his hand.

"(Y/N)" I said and let go of his hand. He looked down at Max.

"Dang she's got a cute name too" he looked up at me and winked. I blushed and laughed.

"You must have a lot of confidence to say that to a girl you just met" he laughed along with me. I started walking towards my stuff.

"What can I say, I'm just really good with the ladies" he said as he followed alongside me. I laughed.

"Hey, it's true when they say that 'curls get the girls' " he laughed and looked down.

"Yeah I guess you're right" he said as we approached my stuff. He immediately looked at my board, then at me.

"You surf?" He asked, watching me as I went to pick up my bag.

"Yeah" I responded. I put my bag over my shoulder.

"I used to surf every morning with my mom" I looked up at him.

"Used to?"

"She died a few years ago from breast cancer" he looked at me with sadness in his eyes.

"I'm so sorry" I chuckled.

"She always told me during her chemo treatment that if she died, not to dwell on the negative side of her death because she would be cancer free and happy up in heaven" I looked up at him as a tear rolled down his cheek. My eyes softened.

"Oh Jack" I walked up to him and wiped his tear with my thumb.

"What are you crying?" I asked. He smiled.

"That was beautiful. Your mother must've been a strong person" I smiled and let my hand fall from his face.

"Yeah she was" I smiled, then looked to the ground where Max lay by our sand covered feet.

"I guess that's where I get it from" I stated, playing with my fingers, something I always did when I was nervous or scared. I heard my phone buzz and took it out of the back pocket of my book bag and saw a text from my dad.

"Hey I gotta go" I looked up at Jack.

"Are you still gonna be out here in an maybe about an hour?" He nodded.

"Yup" he smiled and chuckled. I smiled.

"Ok I'll see you then" I said, then picked up my board and walked to my house, which we were standing in front of. I set the board down on the porch and walked to the door with Max by my feet. I turned and waved goodbye to Jack. He waved back and I turned to walk back inside with a smile on my face.
