You Stay Two Meters Away from Me

Flashback

"Tutor?" sixteen-year-old Phoebe echoed, looking at her father in absolute surprise. "Are you kidding me, dear Ba-ba?"

Hector Perkos sat solemnly on his chair in his study room. He was watching his daughter who was standing with her wide eyes across his study table.

"Ba-ba?"

"Yes. A tutor."

Seriousness. If there was some apparent mood that Phoebe could feel from her father's statement, it was seriousness, utmost seriousness.

No! She screamed inside. Phoebe was currently in her first grade of Lykeion and, as far as she knew, she was doing well in her academics. Why would she need a tutor?

"You are doing good in your other subjects," Hector began his explanation.

"So, why do I need a tutor? You've just said I'm doing good." She crossed her arms on her chest and walked nearer to the table.

"In some of your subjects, agapité kóri, you do them fairly well." Hector opened a folder in his table. "Let me see... Ancient Greek, Modern Greek Language and Literature, History, Biology, Foreign Language, Physical Education, Art Education... you do them fairly well..."

Phoebe bit her lip. Her father obviously had her school records on his table.

"But you are supposed to prepare yourself well in Business and Economics... in business, agapité kóri, you have to do good in mathematics," Hector maintained his serious tone as he scanned the pieces of paper in the folder.

Phoebe bit her lip even more when she heard what her father said. Of all the subjects, why on earth maths have to be the most important subject related to business? If only it could be literature, P.E., or English, then her life would be much easier.

"Why of all subjects, Ba-ba, it has to be maths?" she grumbled, sitting now on the chair in front of his father's study table. "I hate that subject."

Hector, seeing the irritation in his daughter's face, began to smile. Phoebe really was like a photocopy of his American wife, even with the way she talked and acted when Julie was still younger.

"Now, you're smiling at me!" Phoebe exclaimed, smiling as well. "Does that mean you're no longer assigning a tutor to me? Oh, efcharistó!"

Hector again turned back to his solemn expression.

"Ah, Ba-ba, you're playing with me!" she complained now seeing his immediate change of expression.

"Agapité kóri, you have to understand your Ba-ba. Everything I do is for you. Someday, you'll be the one managing the shipping company. Who else would?"

Still disbelieving, he stared at her father.

"Don't look at me that way. We have to do this," her father said with a tone of finality. "Anyway, I'm assigning the best man in maths for you."

"Best man in maths?" she echoed. "A guy? My tutor will be a guy?"

"Naí, he is the best in his alma mater so I expect you to deal with him properly. He is a very good employee of mine so I don't want you to scare the hell out of him. The shipping company needs him," Hector said with a warning tone.

Phoebe laughed this time. "Seems like you value this guy a lot! But why does he sound like a complete nerd?" She questioned, imagining a geek with big-rimmed eye glasses.

Hector laughed as well. "Naí, he is a very valuable man."

"And a geek?"

Hector shook his head. "You won't regret it, Phoebe. He is indeed very good in numbers. I am very confident that you will learn a lot from him."

Phoebe groaned. "Only under one condition, Ba-ba."

"What is it, agapité kóri?" The man with his amused smile closed the folder on his table. "A new bag? A new pair of shoes? A new phone? What, say it! You'll have it as long as you will deal with my man properly."

"Material thing? No. It's not my condition this time," she said, standing up while glancing at her father.

The man's mouth formed an 'Oh.' It was unusual for him to hear such words from his daughter.

"You know very well, Ba-ba, that of all places here in the house, my bedroom is the only area where I could concentrate studying."

"So?"

"The tutorial lessons will all be done in my room. That's the condition. Take it or leave it." Phoebe placed her hands on her waist.

Hector pressed his lips together. Would he allow a man to be in his daughter's lair? But the man in his mind was someone he could trust. He was certain of that. Evandros Xenakis, his protégé, would never do something that would discourage or frustrate him.

"So, Ba-ba? What's your decision?"

"Okay. Approve!" The old man agreed willingly like he didn't make any second thoughts about it.

Phoebe was supposed to be happy but she wasn't. She was expecting her father to never allow it. Was she really that poor in maths that she needed to be tutored... even in her room? Was her father that desperate already?

She was about to say what was in her mind when the intercom buzzed.

"Let him in," Hector commanded to someone in the opposite end.

Immediately, there was a knock on the door of the study room. Phoebe had a great gut-feel that the tutor was the newly arrived. Somewhat irritated, she turned her back from the doorway. Why would the tutor arrive so soon? Would the tutorial have to start as soon as possible? Was her Ba-ba really this desperate?

"Kaló apógevma, kýrie," an unfamiliar deep and husky voice was heard in the room.

Truly, it was Phoebe's first time to hear such kind of a voice. She had been used to her dad's voice and the other men's voices in the mansion and she had also been used to her guy friends' and classmates' voices but she never heard of such kind. She, for a moment, wondered how a man's voice could sound so sexy.

Phoebe wanted to turn to him but she couldn't be tempted by a voice alone so she remained facing her father.

She saw the grin in her Ba-ba's face.

"Good that you're early, Evan. Come closer. Meet my agapité kóri," Hector said, signalling a hand.

Evan? So his name was Evan?

Phoebe heard his footsteps coming near her. She heard calm, confident pacing of the feet. The sound was like an indirect description of the man's personality even when she hadn't seen him yet.

She bit her lower lip. Why would she make a big deal of the footsteps?

"As you know, Evan, my daughter's name is Phoebe. Kóri, meet your tutor, Evandros Xenakis, the best man in maths," Hector said, smiling triumphantly at her.

Finally, Phoebe turned around and faced the newly arrived.

Hot!

She meant the room suddenly became hot. Why?

With her burning cheeks, she faced a guy in his early twenties of, in her estimation, six feet tall, with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. This man definitely got a well-toned body that, for sure, any man would envy. Though he was wearing a collared shirt and jeans, she could tell the sculpted body underneath those clothes. His biceps placarded it.

A god. Was she facing a god?

For a moment, she felt guilty... as in straight-to-her-core kind of guilty.

She felt guilty because she couldn't help herself but stared at the man in front of her. She was supposed to feel this way only to her one and only crush, Zarkos Rozena. Yet, here she was admiring someone else's face. Definitely, this guy didn't look like a geek as she expected.

Her hands were still on her waist but, when the man reciprocated her stare, she put her hands down at both of her sides. It felt so awkward to be gazed by a guy who looked much, much older than her but too hot to never be noticed.

The man, Evandros Xenakis, on the other hand, expected a beautiful, young girl to be her tutee because Hector Perkos, the father, was a known man of charm and beauty as well. However, as he faced the girl personally, he was awed that she had exceeded his expectations of her. He got instantly the impression that this girl, with her Greek and American blood, would break a lot of boys' hearts.

"Kaló apógevma," Evan greeted her.

"Good afternoon, too." Surrendering from the gazing battle, she turned to her father awkwardly. "Do we have to start the tutotial today, Ba-ba? Really this soon?"

"Yes, dear daughter. I believe final exams are forthcoming so you have to prepare in maths as early as now."

"Oh, no!" she exclaimed, clasping her mouth with a palm.

Evan couldn't take his eyes off from the girl. For him, it looked like the tutorial lessons wouldn't be this easy. The girl's reactions told him so.

"Yes, Phoebe. Every afternoon on weekdays, right after school, Evan will deal with you. Don't give him a pain in the head."

"How about my time with my friends? Are you seriously shutting me off from the world, Ba-ba?" she asked, pacing towards Hector who was sitting on his chair. She immediately hugged him in the neck from his back.

"Agapité kóri, your friends can wait until you do good in numbers," Hector answered rubbing her left arm.

Still embracing her dad from behind, Phoebe looked at the man in front of her. Why of all people, her dad chose someone as handsome and sexy as this guy to be her tutor? Would she be able to concentrate on the tutorial knowing that the tutor himself surely would be a great distraction to her?

Wish I had someone not this good-looking and sexy! She expressed to herself.

She blushed at the thought. So ashamed to realize that her new tutor would perceive her blushing, she pulled away from her father and vocally said something different instead. "Wish I had someone much younger."

Her words struck Evandros like he was to choke up. Did he look that old already?

"You better impress me with your ability in numbers, Mr. Xenakis, or else I will look someone much younger whom I can relate more with," Phoebe expressed, still trying to cover her blushes.

"You know that's not possible, kóri," Hector retorted. "We can no longer find someone as good as him. Evan is the best guy in mathematics."

Phoebe felt the butterflies in her stomach starting to be awakened. How on earth would she deal with it? A tutorial session with a hot tutor in her bedroom? Was her father really serious in this?

Hector stood up from his chair. "Okay, you may start the session now, Evan. You know what to do with this girl. Make her top her maths class."

"Top? Are you serious, Ba-ba?" she whined.

Hector smirked at his daughter. "I know you can do that. You just need a little whipping, my dear kóri."

Phoebe looked at her new tutor again.

He was still looking at her like he was studying on how to deal with her.

"The tutorial will be done in her bedroom, Evan," Phoebe heard her father. "That's her request."

She felt someone just threw a bucket of cold water on her. Could she really stay with this man in her room?

"On one condition, Ba-ba!"

"Another condition this time, dear kóri?" Hector just couldn't understand his daughter sometimes.

Phoebe met Evandros' gaze. "You, Evandros Xenakis, will tutor me in my room but on one condition!"

"What is it?" the amazed guy asked, with hands in his pockets.

"During every session, you stay two meters away from me!"
