#13) Burn Notice- Spider-Man
Prompt #13- That's gonna leave a mark. Marvel: Spider-Man and Human Torch team up with a dash of Irondad.
Johnny crossed his arms and looked up at the ceiling where an arachnid themed teenager hung above him, brown eyes staring imploringly. "Come on, man. You know how Su gets when I 'go solo.' She's barely let me out of her sight since the last time-"
"You're twenty-one Johnny! Not something like, I don't know, sixteen." The mock horror in Peter's voice made Johnny roll his eyes.
"Yeah? Well you try tellin' her that when you're bumming in her penthouse."
"Never mind the fact you have your own wing." Peter pointed out helpfully.
Johnny groaned. "You're definitely going to give me gray hairs before I'm thirty. Who cares about aliens when the little bro causes enough stress."
Grinning broadly Peter detached from the ceiling and landed lightly on the floor. "That a yes?"
"You knew it was even before you asked me."
"Whaaaaa?" Peter dodged a stream of fire shot half heartedly toward his face.
Rolling his eyes in mock exasperation Johnny hurried to his bedroom. After changing into his bodysuit he came back to find the kitchen empty. 'Shocker.' Johnny thought wryly. He figured Peter springing this on him deserved to cool his heels for a minute. So Johnny walked, rather than flew, to the roof.
Peter stood on the edge of the roof, masked up and jumping on the balls of his feet. "Why're you sooooo sloooooow?"
"Cuz I can be."
Peter probably rolled his eyes but Johnny couldn't actually tell behind his mask. Smirking, Johnny obliged and flamed up. With a mock salute Johnny tipped backward over the Baxter Building. A whoop followed and soon the two were speeding high above the streets.
"So," Johnny called, "anywhere in particular?"
"Nah. Just patrolling. It's been pretty quiet lately."
"DUDE! Don't jinx it."
Spider-Man sighed. "Yeah, yeah. With my luck you're probably right- Oh hey!" He pulled an abrupt halt and hung off the nearest building. " We gotta stop, it's the hotdog stand!"
Johnny looked down at the nondescript cart many stories below them. "Don't you mean a hotdog stand?"
"No! These ones are legendary. Come on! And even Loki turning me into a pig with one hasn't made me lose my love for 'em."
Johnny paused. "You know how whacked our lives are that that sentence doesn't even make me blink?"
"I mean it still ranks high on the weirdness scale," Spider-Man shrugged, "but it was fine because I got to be protected by Thor. Though the 'hunted by Asgardians' bit wasn't my favorite."
Johnny didn't bother asking. Instead he landed neatly on the ground next to Spider-Man. The white haired tender didn't seem surprised to see two superheroes standing in front of him.
"Ah two strapping young men what'll it be?
Spider-Man leaned forward. "Two dogs please."
"Only two?" The old man's eye glinted at some private joke.
"Just a snack for now."
"Alrighty." The man put two hotdogs on buns, dousing one in ketchup, mustard, and relish. He turned to Johnny, "What would you like on yours?"
It appeared Spider-Man was indeed a regular here if the man already knew what toppings to use. Johnny smirked in amusement. "Just ketchup please."
Condiments added, Johnny pulled out his (read Reed's) credit card but the man waved it away.
"These are on me. A thank you for all you do."
"Are you sure-"
"Yes! Enjoy."
The man smiled and went back to grilling. Johnny shot a look at Spider-Man, but his body language didn't appear surprised.
"Thanks! Come on, Torch. I know the perfect place to eat these." Cradling the hotdog Spider-Man shot a web at the nearest building.
Atop a skyscraper, Johnny had to admit Spider-Man knew some awesome rooftops. The entire cityscape of NYC lay sprawled before them. Cars and people moved about the streets, hardly bigger than ants from where the pair sat. They quietly ate their hotdogs, which did indeed live up to Spider-Man's hype.
Johnny leaned back on his arms, legs dangling over eighty stories of open air. "It don't get much better than this."
Spider-Man hummed in agreement.
Crash! A cloud of smoke rose above the buildings from a few blocks over. Both heroes sighed in unison. Well, they had pushed their luck earlier.
"Ah, man." Spider-Man leapt to his feet. "You comin'?"
"You know it."
In less than a minute they hovered just above the smoke cloud. Something moved within it and Spider-Man groaned. "Please tell me you're not seeing anything and it was just the hotdog I ate."
A large red skinned... thing on four gangly legs pawed furiously at the nearest building. Johnny hadn't seen anything like it before, but it boasted some wicked sharp claws and teeth.
"Nope."
"Bummer. Howz about we go kick some alien- monster?- butt."
Spider-Man released his web and dropped four stories to the ground.
"Yo ugly! What did that building do to you?"
Not for the first time did Johnny wish Spider-Man didn't have such a knack for annoying hostiles. The monster spun and snarled. It shot a foreleg toward Spider-Man, who danced out of the way.
"Ok touchy on your appearance. I can respect that-"
Johnny shot a blast of fire at its face. Maybe it would be like most animals and cower... or swallow it. That apparently could happen too. 'Great.' He flew in, punching the beast's head. It howled. Abandoning Spider-Man it lunged at Johnny.
Spider-Man shot a strand of web at its eyes. Blinded, the beast swung wildly with both forelegs.
"Spider-Man move!"
In slow motion Johnny watched Spider-Man move a beat too slow. A long claw snagged Spider-Man's right leg and jerked downward. Spider-Man let out an aborted yelp. He shot a web above him, pulling himself out of range. A trail of blood fell at the movement.
Johnny sucked in a sharp breath. "Spidey!"
"I'm fine!"
That little liar, but the beast lunged toward Spider-Man again so Johnny couldn't debate the fact. If the monster wanted to eat fire, Johnny would give him fire.
Taking a cue from Spider-Man's book Johnny yelled, "Hey! You want something, take this!"
He pushed his flames hotter and hotter, pausing just before supernova, and shot a concentrated stream toward the creature. It didn't stand a chance. Chunks of flaming alien beast shot in every direction.
Dodging fiery carnage Johnny shot back to Spider-Man. "Spidey, how bad is it?"
The arachnid lay haphazardly on the sidewalk, hands pressed hard against his leg. "Not- not great." Spider-Man said between gasps.
Kneeling next to Spider-Man, Johnny looked closely at the wound. It ran from the back of Spider-Man's knee almost to his ankle. The opening a couple inches from the top of the wound spurted blood at regular intervals.
"Spidey!" Johnny's voice rose.
"Yeah. I know. Pressure. Need... to stop bleeding... and healing factor... will do rest."
"We need to stop that artery." Jonny added his weight to the laceration.
Spider-Man yelped again. Blood quickly soaked Jonny's hands.
"I've got an idea." Johnny said grimly. "It'll help but you're not gonna like it." Johnny's hands subconsciously grew warm.
Spider-Man froze, his masked face jerking towards Johnny's. After a heartbeat (actually five by the pulses beneath Johnny's fingers) he jerkily nodded.
"Do it."
Not giving Spidey time to think about it, Johnny flamed his hands, fingers pressed inside the muscle and on the artery.
Spider-Man screamed.
Johnny full-body flinched but held his flames for several more seconds before falling back like he'd been the one burned.
"Sorry. I'm so sorry but it was the only-"
Spider-Man slumped over, interrupting Johnny's babbling. 'Crap.' Yet it was probably better that Peter had passed out.
As quickly, but gently, as he could Johnny gathered Peter in his arms and shot off into the sky. He didn't have the kid's super strength but adrenaline lended enough to get to the much closer Avengers Tower.
Practically collapsing on the roof across, Johnny stumbled toward the door. Tony Stark threw it open before Jonny could even try to knock.
"What happened?" Tony grabbed the kid and retreated toward the building.
Johnny almost stumbled under the sudden loss of weight as he followed Tony. "Claw laceration. Right calf. Artery punctured. I-I cauterized it. He passed out."
"Friday, page Dr. Cho. We've got incoming. Relay Torch's report."
"Done, sir. She's heading there now."
Tony didn't say anything else until they reached the med bay. There Dr. Cho and two other women in scrubs waited.
"Surgery is prepped. Lay him here. Layla the sedative."
Jonny watched dumbly as Peter's suit was quickly cut away, an IV inserted, and he was being wheeled down the hall. He leaned heavily against the wall and slid to the floor. He heard a grunt then felt Tony drop next to him.
"That kid's going to be the death of me."
"Same, Mr. Stark. Same." Johnny started to rest his head in his hands when he saw dried blood on them.
He jumped to his feet, rubbing his hands on his shirt. His breathing quickened as it wouldn't come off.
"Johnny, hey!" Tony's hands caught Johnny's wrists. "Were you hurt too?"
"No- no, but- but Peter's-" Johnny cut off.
Tony turned Jonny's hands palm up and grimaced. "Here. Let's get you cleaned up while we wait."
Heat bloomed in Johnny's face but he allowed Tony to lead him to another room with an attached bathroom.
Tony pulled a set of clean scrubs out of a cupboard and plopped them on the bed. "Shower's in there. I'll be back by the OR. If you get lost, ask Friday to direct you."
Nodding Johnny grabbed the scrubs and turned on the shower as hot as it would go. He scrubbed away the blood, watching the brown flakes disappear down the drain. It wasn't like he'd never seen blood before- being a superhero it happened, but the blood didn't usually belong to a close friend. His own wounds spontaneously cauterized more often than not, Reed's stretchy and Ben's rocky skin meant penetration rarely occurred, and Su's force fields protected her a majority of the time.
But having seen so much of Peter's blood... Johnny shuddered. If a few salty tears made their way down the drain, well, no one would be able to tell.
Sighing Jonny shut off the water. His flames dried him instantly. He changed quickly and made his way back to Tony.
Two chairs had been placed in the hall. Tony sat in one of them, staring at the ceiling. He looked up at Johnny's approach.
"They're stitching him up. Cho said in a couple of days he'll be fine."
"They're already almost done?"
Tony smiled mirthlessly. "With the kid's healing factor, and Cap's to be honest, Cho's team has learned to break speed records while being efficient. He'll be fine."
Johnny slid into the other chair, relief making his knees weak. Peter would be fine (if course he'd be- he was Spider-Man). Together Tony and Johnny waited for when their mutual heart attack inducer would be ready for visitors.
