Mickey on a Mission

He was breathing heavily. He heard the small footsteps behind him. He tried to steady his breathing, to quieten down. He couldn't. He was nothing more than a child, yet he felt as though everything was about to end for him. He closed his eyes as he continued trying to calm down. He opened them again shortly after. She stood there. A small girl, clearly younger than himself, her green sweater covered in blood, her eyes emotionless, no guilt nor pleasure. Her hand snapped out in front of her. She shoved it in the boys chest, pulling it out again with a human heart in her hand. The boy died immediately. The girl just stared at the dead body blankly. Then she walked away.

Mickey's hands were coated in blood no less than they were ten years ago. She is well known around Kollok, very much feared. She didn't care. About anything. She just did assignment after assignment after assignment. Well, maybe she felt a bit of pride about the fear, but she didn't show it. She worked for Synchroniety, killing those who may try to find out their secrets or bringing body parts back for testing. She had a strong power, she was born with it, and she was never afraid to use it, so the people at Synchroniety knew that if she was treated wrongly... she could do whatever she wanted to them with no remorse. She... enjoyed her job? Once again, Mickey felt nothing. She thought she felt nothing. But she was blind to the pride and happiness she felt, but also the loneliness and dispair. Her feelings were at war, they were too busy fighting to show themselves to the world.

"Mickey," Marcus, the CEO of Synchroniety approached her. "I have a new job for you."

Marcus tried his best to befriend Mickey, yet it never worked. "What?" she asked.

"We've recently tracked down three children who would be eligible for a job like yours. I need you to go under cover in high school to find out more about them, to see if we are correct. If we are, then you are to bring them here. You will be in the care of my sister Laura for three months. I think you'll like her."

"Really? I have to go to school?"

"It's also a good chance to have a proper education for a little, instead of Mr Kingley teaching you everything."

Mickey sighed. She knew she never had a choice.

MICKEY'S P.O.V

I packed my few belongings: a toothbrush, a hairbrush, two long books and a pen and notebook, and I was whisked away into the town of Kollok. People made sure to stay out of my way. They saw the blood-stained clothes, they knew the face. I arrived at the address and knocked on the door. While I waited for an answer, I glanced down at the small pages of information given to me about the three kids I was to 'befriend':

'NAME: Tibby DEVIN

AGE: 14

SUSPECTED POWER: Healing, and potentially the opposite.'

'NAME: Embeth PEGG

AGE: 16

SUSPECTED POWER: Stopping time.'

'NAME: Billy BAKER

AGE: 15

SUSPECTED POWER: Reality warp.'

None of the abilities sounded strong like the strength I had been born with, and trained to grow, and they were a bit lame compared to my ability to find people, or steal people's egos. They could be cool. Each paper was accompanied by a picture. The door was opened, and a girl who looked almost exactly like Marcus answered the door. "You're Mickey," she said.

"Yes," I nodded.

"I can't believe I'm actually talking to you! Come in."

Laura let me in. "Your bedroom is just down the hall. I don't care what you do, just as long as I don't get harmed, you don't get harmed or the kids you're after don't get harmed," she said.

"Okay."

Laura was staring out the window the next morning. "Um... you okay?" I asked.

"Hm? Oh, yeah, I'm good. Just... thinking about a lost friend," Laura replied.

"Who?" I realised it might've been an upsetting question.

I got an answer anyway. "Marcus."

"He's alive, he literally contacted you to take me in. Also, isn't he your brother?"

"Oh Mickey." Laura chuckled. "You're going to have to learn a lot about people if you're to fit in well here."

"I'm... me, I can't fit in."

"Come sit."

I went and sat on the sofa next to Laura. "Marcus and I used to be inseparable. We did everything together, and nothing made us happier than each other. When he got the job at Synchroniety, we never hung out anymore. He was always 'too busy', not his happy old self anymore, a shell of who he once was. The old him is dead. That's who I'm mourning."

"Oh. Can you give me information about high school?"

"You really have your mind set on missions, huh. It's always hard being the new kid, and you need to be careful about who you choose to talk to. But really, it's just about following the crowd. And if you feel upset, don't even excuse yourself, just go. I'm acting as your 'big sister', your carer, and I've told them you have really bad anger issues. That's all."

"Okay."

I scanned the school crowd. I saw none of the kids from the pictures I had. Well, then one of them walked up to me. "Hey, Mickey Jones?" she asked, obviously quite scared.

I wasn't going to hurt her, but I wasn't going to tell her that. For a bit of fun. I looked at her for a second. "Yeah, what?" I replied.

"U-um... Principal Jenkins... he said, I... I was looking after you for the first week."

I was going to say I didn't need looking after, but I had literally no idea how high school worked, so I just said, "Okay."

"We... we need to..."

"We need to what? Just spit it out."

"Sorry! I... we need to get your papers. Follow me."

I followed the girl through the crowd. As we did, I decided to verify her identity. "So who are you?" I asked.

"Oh, sorry, I forgot to say. I'm Embeth Pegg, but a lot of people either call me Em or Em Pegg."

I nodded. We entered the building. A lady sat at the front desk shuffling papers. She looked up at Em Pegg and I. Fear flashed in her eyes. She said with all the confidence she could muster, "Miss Pegg, I suspect you're here to pick up Miss Jones's schedule?"

"Yes," Em Pegg replied. She was handed a stack of papers. We walked away, however we didn't get very far. I bumped into a boy. The boy looked petrified. "I am so so so sorry! I didn't mean to do that, I..." he spluttered.

"Save your breath," I spat. I smirked, which made him even more scared. "It's fine. I'm mean, but not mean enough to destroy you for bumping into me." I realised he was one of the boys I had pictures of. "Who are you?"

"T-Tibby, Miss. Tibby Devin."

"Calm down." I liked the way he acted like me. He was so scared, it was... no, Mickey, keep your head in the game. "And don't call me 'Miss'."

"Sorry."

"Tibby's my friend," Em said.

"Y-yeah! We're friends!"

"You wouldn't by chance... know a Billy Baker?" I asked.

"He's our other friend! How'd you know about him?"

"I've heard rumours."

"Oh. Do you wanna meet him?"

"Sure."

Tibby and Billy were absolute idiots. But Billy felt like a psychopath in the making. He just had those vibes... and my head hurt a but from the huge magical aura. High school was incredibly hard, but my first class was pretty good.

Em Pegg, Tibby and Billy silently walked next to me into art class. I looked around at the art on display, from pots to drawings, it wasn't too shabby. The teacher was quite obviously scared of me. She started shaking as soon as she laid eyes on me. I gave her a fake glare, and she nearly screamed. Em looked quite amused. "Mrs Peaches is normally scaring everyone else. She doesn't like us for some reason," she said.

"What do you mean she doesn't like you?" I asked.

"She likes calling us out in class, pointing out that we're bad artists and everyone gets really into it. We already have a bad reputation as the nerds at school," Billy replied.

"I think she'd want to stop doing that."

Mrs Peaches cleared her throat. "Okay everyone, today we're just going to free draw. Draw anything, but make it your best work. Pencils, paper and erasers should already be on your table."

I smiled at the paper and pencils. "Welp, she asked for it," I shrugged.

I snatched a pencil and paper and began to sketch an incredibly gruesome drawing of Mrs Peaches dead on the floor with a knife in her head. "Hey, what's her real name?" I whispered.

Em chuckled at my drawing. "Ah, that's great. Her name's Victoria," she replied.

I scribbled the name above the picture, and an arrow pointing to the drawing. I began colouring it in. Suddenly, I heard a laugh. "What the Hell is that, nerd?!" a boy exclaimed.

Tibby bit his lip as he looked down at his drawing of a narwhal, dog, giraffe and lion playing Monopoly. It didn't actually look that bad. "I..." he whispered.

"Well?"

"Leave him be, Cameron," Billy frowned.

Mrs Peaches spotted Tibby's drawing, and Billy's dinosaur also caught her eye. She burst out laughing. "What have you drawn?!" she asked.

"That's not nice Miss," I hissed.

"Don't you think they look bad, hun?!"

"Don't 'hun' me, Victoria." I practically spat her name.

"What did you just call me?" Mrs Peaches glared at me.

"Victoria." Everyone snapped around to look at us.

"Don't call a teacher by their first name."

"I wouldn't talk to me like that." I held up my picture to her. She gasped. "This picture just may  come to life. Or death, technically."

"You wouldn't."

"Oh but I would."

"I don't get how you even think those pictures look half decent," Cameron said.

I reached over the table and grabbed him by the hair, standing and yanking him over to me. I pulled him off the ground to look me dead in the eye. He looked scared in his eyes, but he tried to hide it. My hand rested on the side of his neck. "I know you're scared," I said. "What I'm about to do to you won't kill you, but it'll hurt like Hell."

I pressed on his neck, and he started to scream. A hand mark was left when I removed my hand, and I shoved him to the ground. He continued to shout in pain. I turned to Mrs Peaches. "As for you... I've heard about your inappropriate behaviours," I said.

"No... no you haven't! I've acted perfectly fine!" she insisted.

"You can't lie to me."

My hand entered her chest. I pulled out her heart, and she died. Everyone was staring in shock. "Hurt me again and this'll happen to you," I hissed.

"But we didn't even hurt you," Cameron's friend snorted. "We hurt the nerds."

My bloody hand landed across her face. She squealed in disgust. "What will it take for you to shut your freaking mouth?" I growled.

"Sorry..."

"Good. Now leave me and the 'nerds' alone."

I waved goodbye to my friends and began walking back to Laura's. They all seemed okay just living normal lives. I could never imagine them suddenly turning to stone-cold killers. I didn't want that. Hold up, did I care for them? I literally only met them that day! Laura noticed I looked a bit confused when I walked in the door. "What's going on?" she asked me.

"I found who I was looking for," I replied, going through her fridge to find a snack.

"That was quick."

"It was. But I don't think that they should have the same fate as me."

"If I'm honest... I don't really agree to this all either. Synchroniety is just grabbing kids to use at their benefit. It's not right. But if you don't grab them... Marcus might try getting his own hands on them. If you won't turn them in, they can get seriously hurt, so I recommend being ready to protect them at all times."

"You're right."

We both stood in silence. "What does... care feel like?" I asked.

"Care?" Laura repeated.

"Yes."

"It... it's hard to explain. You'd... you'd help those you are about, protect them. You'd feel happy and comfortable around them."

"I think that's how I feel around the kids I've been sent to get."

Laura smiled. "That's good," she said.

"They definitely have some sort of magic. They have that aura of magic around them."

"You'll have to help them find it."

"I guess I will."

I strolled into school the next morning, sneaking smiles at kids who clearly thought I'd jump at them at any moment. Must've heard about yesterday's art class then. I found Em Pegg sitting alone, her nose in a comic. "Are the other two here?" I asked.

"No... I h-"

Tibby and Billy were chasing each other over to us, just as classes were to begin. I cursed silently. Then I dragged myself to class, where I was to sit and learn for two boring hours.

Break time rolled around, and I tracked down Em, Billy and Tibby. I forced them to a quiet part of the school yard. "Alright, we're just gonna cut to the chase here. I work for Synchroniety," I began.

"What?! The evil, murderous, kidnapping company?" Billy asked.

"Yes. And I was sent to get you three, they want to use you, use you to do what I do."

"Which... is..?"

"I take what Synchroniety wants, and I give it to them."

"And you're just gonna HAND US IN?!"

"Hell no!"

"Why do they want us?" Tibby frowned.

"Because it is suspected that you have powers. Abilities. And together, we're going to work to take Synchroniety down."

"How on Earth do we do that?!"

I chuckled. "Oh we will. They know I'm strong, but the four of us together... yeah, they have science, but I have FEAR. I know them well, and besides, I know a few friends who could help us along the way."
