Chapter 29
Two men with guns raced towards her and put something cold and heavy over her wrists; handcuffs. She grimaced as she was brought to her feet forcefully. Her eyes darted towards Bellamy, why wasn’t he saying anything? The one who killed Kane was saying how they were safe now, but Athena had a bad feeling that didn’t extend to her. She was different than them, she looked like the enemy, and they would never believe if she said otherwise.
“Wait.” Bellamy noticed Athena. “Wait, Kane, what the hell are you doing?!”
He darted between the others as quickly as he could, heading towards Athena. She kept her expression cold and hard, she would give these people nothing. She would not beg them to free her, giver some sob story about how she had helped these kids whom they sent down to die survive a massacre. No, she would let the others speak for her, as it was a stronger force coming from the people they knew.
One guard kept hold of her, while the other walked up to stop Bellamy. He put his hands out and shoved him in the chest as he came, preventing him come coming any closer. Athena looked up at him and shook her head slightly; aggressively approaching this was not smart. Though it was in her nature to be aggressive, she knew when it was not an appropriate response.
“You have to let her go!” Bellamy shouted, his anger obvious.
Monroe stepped up, and people began to file in through the forest. There were so many people, so many Sky People to be exact, and Athena knew that this was her jury. The red head spoke softly, “Why are you arresting her?”
Kane looked at her as if she were so far below him, and Athena wondered for a moment if he was even going to speak. “She is one of them, we will hold her for questioning. You told us all about these Grounders, and how horrible they were.”
“Not all of them.” Bellamy joined in the debate. “She is one of the only reasons we’re alive.”
Athena scoffed; it was a praise that was far from true. Every single thing she had told them hadn’t exactly worked out. Some of the tactics had helped, her taking on her own people single handed helped, but she had told them to leave, and because of that someone had died, and so many more people died because they were not prepared to fight a war. Their idea to use the drop ship as a weapon did not come from her, but Athena didn’t deny the praise; if it freed her hands she would be appreciative of a little white lie.
“And I am supposed to take the word of some criminal?” Kane asked Bellamy.
“I was pardoned, by the chancellor himself.” Bellamy growled, though Athena had no idea what they were talking about. She knew that all the kids sent down had been criminals, but she didn’t know what they had done. Not even what Bellamy had done.
“And I will uphold that pardon, but you’re walking on thin ice, Mr. Blake.” He shifted the gun in his hand. “She will not be treated poorly, but she will be detained until we can trust her.”
Bellamy’s eyes flashed with anger and Athena decided to speak up. “Bellamy, it’s okay.”
His hands were balled into fists, but they relaxed when they heard her voice. He walked over to her, his shoulders dropped but his head still held high. Athena could hardly see his face, but she could tell that he looked defeated, in more than one way. Not only had he almost been killed by an army, then Tristan, but now he had to be submissive to Kane, and it was clear that Bellamy liked being an authoritative figure. Now he was just another kid who had been pardoned for his crimes.
The group decided to go to the drop ship, though Athena knew that they wouldn’t find what, or whom, they were looking for. She decided to keep her mouth shut until she was asked further questions. During the walk to the drop ship, a woman came to her side. She had a sharp set jaw, strong looking. Long ash brown hair. She was quite fair, but Athena gave her nothing about herself, and waited for her to speak.
“You are hurt, those bandages look like they are harbouring infection.” She spoke softly, quietly even.
“They aren’t.” Athena replied, “I’ve cauterized the wound.”
“I’m Abby, Clarke’s mum. Do you… know Clarke?”
“Yes.” Athena didn’t speak with Clarke much, but she knew who she was. Bellamy looked up to her.
“I’m a doctor, I should really look at those wounds when we get back.”
“Back?”
“To our camp.”
“I don’t need your help.” Athena knew being cold was not going to win her any favours with these people, but she couldn’t seem to fight a growing hatred for them already. Had they not seen her fighting Tristan in attempt to keep Bellamy alive? Did they not believe Bellamy’s words when he said that they were alive because of her? She guessed they didn’t care. Athena had dealt with people like this before, hardened people who disliked any thoughts but their own. Their rule was law.
“They are just taking precautions.” Abby sighed.
“You’re wasting your time going to the camp.” Athena saw the walls, they were already there, and the distant smell of charred bones and melted flesh reached her nose. She gaped, stopping in her tracks, but was forced to keep moving by the guard behind her.
“Why?” Abby asked, not noticing Athena’s stumble.
The bodies, still smoking, made Athena lose her train of thought. Everything seemed to disappear from her, and she dropped to her knees, staining the fabric of her pants with the remains of the army. Aslan had told her what had happened here, she knew it before she arrived, but it was so much worse when she saw it. People died in battle, tactics were made to slaughter as many as possible. Both sides had done terrible things, and Athena knew that her people had made the rash decision to attack children, but she hadn’t expected it to be so horrible when she laid eyes on the crisped army.
“Are you okay?” Abby asked, but realized that Athena was kneeling in the burnt remains of her friends.
Athena wondered if any of her own had made it out. Salvatore? Lucifer? Leia? She had no idea, but Aslan seemed sure that they were all dead as well. As Athena was forced to stand up again, she looked around at the endless sea of black, and felt sick to her stomach. Her eyes found Bellamy, and pain filled them. She shut her eyes and looked away, not letting Bellamy see this side of her. She didn’t like seeing this side of her; she was acting weak. Clearing her throat, she walked deeper into the camp, trying to avoid looking at the bodies.
Someone came out of the drop ship, and Athena could hear a commotion. Her eyes darted over, and she saw Bellamy attacking someone. She could not interfere, she didn’t care right then. She had spotted something in the ash, something glimmering. Faded amber underneath the charcoaled bodies. She walked over slowly and slipped her arms under her legs so that her bound hands were in front of her, then leaned down to pull the necklace from the carnage.
It was Kira’s.
She had been so young.
Athena was no better than Anya, she was no better than Kane. Sending children into battle. A chill ran down her spine as she tried to calm herself, holding the amber necklace in her hands; they wouldn’t take this from her. She looked over at the fight that was going on, and she saw that it was being broken up. Kane used some type of electricity to stun Bellamy, then cuffed him.
So they were both prisoners now.
Bad news, guys! I have been pretty busy this last week, so I'm only one chapter ahead in my writing. My brother had his baby boy last night, my mum got married on Monday, my mum's birthday was Thursday, and just everything is a bit chaotic. So, I'm only one chapter ahead. I'm going to a concert tomorrow and so I have to take a ferry to the mainland and it is going to be a whole day thing, and an overnighter, and so I won't be able to post tomorrow (most likely) or Monday as when I get back from the mainland I am going straight to work! I'm going to try, in the next three hours I have, to write at least two more chapters so that I can post Sunday OR Monday. Sorry about this! Busy week!
