"But why can't I have cupcakes?!"
"Because it's 7 in the morning that's why!"
"But-"
"No."
I could basically hear Belle sigh from my room as she nagged Indi for food. I guess I'm in for a normal day, I thought to myself. Ever since I moved, Boston had seemed way more crowded than before. Maybe it was because I had two new roommates, or maybe it was because of the fact that I think I'm developing claustrophobia, either way, it was exhausting. I dragged myself out of bed and staggered over to the small closet, pulling out a worn over-sized sweater to cover my exposed body. Who sleeps in clothes anymore? I walked out into the kitchen to find Indi standing on a chair with a box of cupcakes in her hand holding them above her head, and out of Belle's reach.
"Indi, please get down from there, you're going to fall and hurt yourself." I said groggily, as they turned their heads only just realising I was there. She looked at me for a moment before stepping down slowly off the chair. I swiftly grabbed the box of sweets from her hand before Belle reached them and put them back in the cabinet. "No sweets until at least after lunch, it makes your stomach upset to eat in the morning remember?" I said to Belle who was pouting in the corner of the small run-down kitchen. She nodded and ran off to the living room, knowing I was not a morning person and I wouldn't be able to tolerate the energy radiating off of her until I had my coffee. Indi looked at me and half smiled, to which I returned the same and walked slowly over to the coffee pot pouring in freshly made coffee into my favourite mug.
"I thought I'd take a step out of your day today and make you coffee, I mean you're the only one who drinks it, I don't get how." Indi rambled on softly, I smiled and turned to look at her.
"With a shit ton of creme and sugar." I said slyly she laughed and shrugged.
"What ever floats your boat kiddo." She said walking off to join Belle. I giggled, having dumped loads of artificial sweetener into the bitter bean juice awaiting me, I walked into the living room to find Belle engulfed in half a dozen blankets intensely watching Netflix on the small screen of our television, smiling every now and then, and Indi at her desk probably sketching the scene outside of our window, for the millionth time. She always said she could never get it quite right, and that she'd continue to draw it until she did. I walked over to the open window she was looking out and climbed outside onto the rusty fire escape. Grabbing my cigarettes from the ledge inside and sitting on the stairs quickly lighting one and sipping my coffee.
"Wait!" Indi almost yelled, startling me, I turned my head to look at her. She was fumbling around her desk, until she pulled out a larger sketchbook, flipping it open to a blank page. "Stay there, I want to draw you." I sighed and turned my head back to the city scene that unraveled before my eyes. All I could hear was the faint sounds of the television and the sound of pencils hitting paper softly behind me. I was half way through my cigarette when I looked back at the clock inside.
"Shit." I said, Indi looked up, her concentration broken.
"What's wrong Kenny?" She asked, even Belle had turned around.
"I didn't realise it was so late! I'm late for work!" I said quickly putting out the light and scrambling through the window. Indi and Belle just laughed. "What?"
"Uhm, Kenny, it's Saturday..." Belle said quietly, still wrapped in her burrito of blankets.
"Wait... Are you fucking kidding me? Ugh. I hate myself." The other two were still giggling as I slowed down and slumped down onto the couch. I sighed and curled up against Belle.
"It's okay, at least you had us and didn't go to work on a Saturday." She said quietly, and I nodded slightly. I got up to go find my coffee and left Belle to finish watching her show. I walked around for a couple seconds until I turned around to find Indi holding my mug out to me. I smiled and she returned it, hers eyes squinting slightly as the corners of her mouth formed the facial expression I always found so artificial, but somehow she made it seem genuine. I took the mug from her hand and walked back to the window, standing there for a moment.
"We should do something today. I mean this is all we ever do, and since it's SATURDAY, we should go out. It's a great day out today." I turned to the girls before turning back to the grey sky, the clouds seemingly calm and serene.
"But wouldn't that require going... outside?" Belle whispered in horror. Indi laughed at her but looked at me.
"I dunno Kenny, it's scary out there." She said looking pained.
"But look it looks like its going to rain, and we can't pass up the opportunity to enjoy the clouds." I said hopeful, motioning towards the barred windows. Belle looked outside and shrugged.
"I guess it is a pretty day. Fine. What do you want to do? Nothing too exercise heavy." I laughed.
"Of course, maybe we could just go walk around, do some shopping?" Indi nodded vigorously, and ran off to her room, probably to find clothes in the mess that littered her floor. Half of those clothes probably weren't even hers, or she didn't technically own them. I followed slowly, leaving Belle to unravel the plethora of blankets. My room was clean. Very clean. I didn't spend many nights in here. I didn't spend many nights in the apartment anyway. All I needed was my purse. The only reason I came back most of time was for the girls, or the animals. And occasionally my vinyls. The girls wouldn't survive without me here sometimes, forgetting to do laundry, or clean up, they'd probably die in a week. They almost did when I went on vacation. I walked over to the small cramped closet and pulled out some high waisted shorts, not worrying about the fact that my sweater was see-through. I grabbed my vans and walked back out, seeing Belle still there figuring herself out of her burrito.
"Do you need some help?"
"NO!" I laughed
"Okay okay!" I said holding my hands up in defeat. I walked over to the coffee pot pouring myself another cup as I waited for Indi to be ready. I figured I had at least 10 minutes. I walked over to the couch, where Belle had just finished unraveling herself and was getting up to go get ready to leave, last nights makeup smeared across her face. She ran across the room almost slipping at least three times before disappearing from site. She wouldn't take as long and Indi, so we would be waiting together.
Indi finally walked out of her bedroom, THIRTY FIVE minutes later, looking confused as she came upon our annoyed faces.
"What?" She asked passively. I shook my head and waved them out the door. We made it halfway down the steps when Belle yelled out.
"WAIT!" her voice echoed throughout the staircase, probably waking up the next door neighbours. We turned around, staring intently at her. We stared questioningly at her for at least a minute while she just stood there wide eyed. After a couple minutes, Indi finally spoke.
"Okay, are you going to tell us what that was about or not?" She asked annoyed.
"The dogs." She said as-a-matter-a-fact and ran back up stairs. I sat down on the stairs and sighed. No point in fighting her anymore. Indi looked so confused and looked at me for an answer. I just shook my head and looked down. A couple minutes later, Belle came running back down the stairs and ran past us.
"COME ON YOU GUYS!" She yelled halfway out the door. I laughed and got up, and followed her, Indi following sluggishly behind me.
We walked into the coffee shop below our apartment and the cashier, Alex, greeted us as we walked towards him. He sheepishly smiled at Indi. He'd had a crush on her since we moved in, but she was to oblivious. You would think she would notice considering they worked together during the week. Either way, he chased while she ignored.
"Hey Alex, weird to see you working on a Saturday." He chuckled.
"Yeah, well I need the extra hours, saving up, you know?" I nodded. "Your usual?" he asked cheerfully, and I nodded again quicker this time. He smiled and asked the girls if they wanted their normal which they did and we went and sat down. Ready to get on with this girls day out.
