XXIV -- If I Win

"Fianceé?" Yaoyorozu was dumbstruck.

"Aoi, how many times do I have to tell you, we're not engaged."

"But we will be soon. My Quirk will be very useful for you. And it will be for our future children too."

Yaoyorozu covered her mouth in shock.

"I don't approve Quirk marriages. And I certainly won't marry you."

"You will Shou-kun."

"I will marry for love and I certainly don't love you."

Aoi didn't react and closed her mouth as if she was taken a back by what I said.

"Wait. Can we not talk about this in public? I have little to no idea on what's going on. Let's talk somewhere else." Yaoyorozu suggested.

"And why should I follow you?" Aoi asked.

"Don't you want to know why Todoroki-san chose me instead of you?"

"He's just confused. I'm sure he'll realized it eventually."

"I think the confused one who should realize their place is you." Yaoyorozu firmly said. She then held my hand, which took me by surprise.

"Let's go." She then guided us out of the school campus.

What?" Aoi asked.

"I said I'll spar with you. If that's what you truly wish for."

Her eyes narrowed slightly, observing me.

"What's the catch?" She quickly guessed my plan.

"If I win, you will do as I say and rest up."

"Hmm..." She thought for a while. "Very well. I'll agree with it."

Aoi gently got up on her knees and crawled closer to me.

"But if I win,"

Her hand held my cheek gently, with her thumb lightly pressing my lower lip. She looked down at these lips of mine before looking back at my eyes.

"You will have no right to tell me what to do."

We're inside a famous chicken fast food restaurant. The three of us are waiting for our order here at the second floor.

"Now tell me. Why should I hand over Shou-kun to you?" Aoi asked.

"Aoi first of all, you don't own me in the first place. We are not engaged."

"Then why did your father decide to take me into your home but not get your family name?"

"I can't answer that question. It was Father and Mother's decision."

"I understood your Mom because she has taken a liking to me, but your Father is different. He changed his mind immediately after seeing my Quirk."

"That doesn't mean that I am engaged to you."

"Todoroki-san is right. Why are you forcing yourself Kiseki-san?"

"If I'm not your fianceé then what am I here for? Why did your family let me live?"

Those memories keep coming back my head. Is it because the Aoi that I desperately tried to escape from is back?

Her warm voice turned monotonic. Her smile disappeared. And her eyes are unreadable and cold, just like back then.

I took a deep breath and sighed.

Thinking about the past is not important. What I should focus is how to stop Aoi from rebelling against me and to make her listen. If she's back then she there is a high chance that she knows how to control her Quirk again, but I know that as long as I fight at a close proximity, I have the advantage.

After I finished changing into the UA sports attire, I left the locker room.

"Okay let me review the facts." Yaoyorozu stated.

We just received our orders, but I find it difficult to eat. The tension between the three of us is heavy. It's fortunate that there are only few people eating on the second floor.

"Todoroki-san found you in a temple in the middle of the forest during a blizzard. Then his parents ended up being your legal guardian, but not as your adoptive parents. They didn't give you their surname. Todoroki-san why is that?"

"When I asked Mother about it, she said that it's because Father does not want to stain the family name." I replied to Yaoyorozu

"So what she's saying--"

"And also...in case I fail, he is planning to get me married to Aoi to have a more powerful child."

I looked at Aoi. She wasn't smiling but I can sense delight.

"But things changed now right?" Yaoyorozu stated. "Endeavor is no longer like that. He truly cares for your choices."

I nodded in agreement. "And also, I won't fail. I will become the number one hero. And even if I don't, I can still save people. That's what matters, Aoi. So please stop this nonsense."

Yaoyorozu and I waited for her reply, but Aoi stayed silent and took her spoon and fork to take out a piece of the fried chicken breast on her plate. She took a bite of that piece, and chewing it properly. Then she spoke.

"No."

When I asked the teachers for permission, they decided to allow the sparring not in one of the training grounds but in the plain cemented ground where the Aoi's isolated room once stood. It was no longer in sight and all that remains is this ground. They also said that they need to see how Aoi's battle skills were affected by what happened. So they will be monitoring us in the monitoring room through drones.

Amezawa was no longer to be seen. It rained a while ago but it quickly disappeared as well. My guess would be that he already came and took her back to the summer camp where she should be.

It didn't take a minute for me to see a familiar figure walking closer. With a UA sports attire, and long hair tied into a loose side ponytail on her right shoulder, she stopped at least a meter away from me. She really looks like a lifeless doll.

"Shall we start?" Her emotionless voice stated.
