VII -- Secrets
SHIN
'Please let me eat at the fast food, please, please please...' Aoi's thoughts echoed in my mind. We've already arrived at the fast food restaurant but since she had a sudden headache, Shouto and I were hesitating if we should continue go and eat inside or buy take outs instead. Right now, we're still inside my car and Aoi is trying to persuade her overly-protective guardian. I, on the other hand, am merely looking at these two people fight at the passenger seat, turning at them and enjoying their argument.
"I can't risk you having another headache."
"But what if we get hungry while travelling?"
"We'll find a place to stop over."
"But what if I'll get a headache over there instead?"
Shouto sighed. 'She won't stop until she gets what she wants' I found myself agreeing with his thoughts. Of course she won't, Aoi's a bit spoiled and we've spoiled her much more at the hospital.
"Please just let me ea---" Aoi's golden eyes shut closed, as her head starts to hurt again. She held it, grabbing her pale blue hair. Shouto immediately held Aoi in his arms. I felt my hand grab the chair I'm sitting at as I felt my head hurt as well like a pounding hammer. But I remained a calm look in my face and ignored the pain. Instead, I've focused on the words that Aoi's mind is creating.
"Happy Valentine's Day, Aoi~ Where's my chocolate?"
"Do you really think she'll give you a chocolate?"
"Of course, I'm her bestfriend after all!"
"..."
"Don't get jealous, Shouto."
"I'm not--"
"Being uncomfortable by the fact that you're no longer the only one that would receive Aoi's chocolates is not a form of jealousy? Then what do you call it? Overly-protective?"
"...."
"Hey Aoi, when do you think Shou-kun would get friendly? He's kind and gentle to anyone but me."
"Shou-kun?"
"Hahahahah"
After that, the pain slowly subsided. She opened her sunlight gold eyes. They looked exhausted as I felt her shallow and weak breaths. I looked at Shouto. He wanted to tell her that he told her so, but he couldn't speak out those words to that poor girl in his arms.
"Aoi?" I called her, and her golden eyes looked at me. Why am I having these headaches? What did I just hear? Why am I hearing things? Am I going crazy? No, you're not going crazy. "Can you still handle the pain? Would you still like to go inside the restaurant?"
She looked away from me. Then she looked up to the guy holding her with a concerned look. Then she peeked looked outside the window where the fast food restaurant is waiting for her. She looked like a little girl wanting a toy and her parents where her parents aren't planning to buy it. Luckily for her, I am a parent who couldn't stand his child pouting.
"Let's go to inside." I stated with a smile. Shouto and Aoi looked at me with different look on their faces. They're both surprised, but Aoi looks happy while Shouto is frowning at me.
I opened the car door and walked towards the restaurant without waiting for them to come along. I entered the western fast food. There are several people around but most of them are already eating. There is a counter waiting for a customer so I went there and ordered three burgers, three soft drinks, three sundaes and three French fries. Mr. Yamazuki, my driver, had already eaten his breakfast that's why I didn't order for him. Shouto, on the other hand, was fine with anything. And I was positive that Aoi still have the same food preferences. When all of my orders were served, I took the tray and looked for a table. When I turned around, Aoi and Shouto just entered the place. It seemed like they had another argument before they decided to follow me.
I noticed the people immediately looked at them, especially Shouto, with surprised faces. With his red-white hair and scar, only people living under a rock wouldn't recognize him as Endeavor's son. I walked towards them with my tray full of food. Aoi's eyes shimmered as she saw the food. It made me smile. We then chose to eat at the second floor where there are no customers, and chose a table with cushion seats. After placing the tray, and giving them their share, we clasped our two hands together and said "Itadakimasu"
We started eating, and I stare at Aoi's mannerisms. After she opened the burger's wrapper, she turned the burger around to find the spot that has little meat, and then she took a bite. I continued staring at her while eating my fries, dipping it into the ketchup before popping it into my mouth. She noticed me and our eyes met. I gave her a cheery smile.
"What are you looking at?" She asked.
"I'm looking at you eating."
"Stop it, creep." I couldn't help but laugh at her reaction. She frowned at me but I couldn't stop my laughter. It's just so nostalgic, and I might turn gloomy again if I won't laugh. She helplessly rolled her eyes, and I finally calmed myself down. Shouto didn't even spare me a glance, and was eating silently as his thoughts about Aoi's headaches swirl in his head.
I finally became silent (even though I still wanna laugh) and started eating the sundae when Aoi chose to eat her French fries. I could see a girl with pale blue hair tied in a loose side ponytail, and sunlight-colored eyes. Just like Aoi, she took a piece of the French fries, dipped it into the sundae, then to the ketchup before eating it. The girl I saw in my memory coincides with her present mannerisms. Even though she lost her memory, she's still Kiseki Aoi.
I looked down at my food. Damn it. I want to hold her in my arms right now. I want to cry and tell her how much I've missed her. I want to say sorry for everything. I want to tell her everything, but it's not the perfect time yet.
I heard faint footsteps coming closer. I looked up to see a girl looking at the guy sitting beside Aoi.
"Excuse me. I'm very sorry to interrupt." The plain looking teen girl with copper hair stated politely. She's failing to hide her excitement from seeing her idol. "You're Todoroki Shouto-san, right?"
"Yes" Shouto replied. Aoi looked at the girl, tilting her head slightly in confusion. I took a bite of my burger.
"I'm a very big fan. May I have your autograph?" The plain girl asked. Shouto used a smile befitting of a kind-hearted Hero and nodded.
'OH MY GOD! I'M HAVING TODOROKI SHOUTO'S SIGN! I'M SO HAPPY, I'M GONNA DIE! I CAN'T WAAAAAIT TO TELL MY FRIENDS ABOUT THIS. SHOULD I ASK FOR A PICTURE AS WELL? BUT OH, I might interrupt them... I can't do that... BUT STILL' Her thoughts screamed so loud that for a moment, I wanted to cover my ears (although it'll be useless). She fumbled through her shoulder bag to get her journal. Her hands were shaking with excitement as she flipped the pages and handed over the journal to Shouto.
"Oh, the pen." She mumbled to herself as she took a pen and handed it over as well. Shouto asked for her name. Then he wrote it and signed the journal with his signature.
"Thank you very much!" She bowed happily. "U-umm... I'm really happy to see you. I wasn't expecting you to be out here. I actually thought you might be working on your papers for becoming a professional hero since you've graduated."
"Graduated?" Aoi's voice came out like a whisper. Damn it. I knew that lie won't work so well.
"Also, I would really like to share my condolences for the incident 9 months ago." The plain stupid-looking girl continued talking. Shouto make her shut up.
"Graduated? Are they lying to me? What incident? Am I included in that incident? Condolences? Did someone die?" Questions started piling up in Aoi's head.
"Thank you. But I don't want to dwell on that incident. It was very tragic." Shouto stated, dismissing the topic kindly.
"Oh, I'm very sorry. It's just that it was a very sad one, and it made me surprised to see Kiseki Aoi beside you. "She glanced at Aoi, and controversial thoughts started appearing inside her head. My eyes narrowed. She's not just a fan but a nosy one.
"She just got out."
"Oh, I see. May I ask if she's---"
"I'm so sorry, Tamaki Megumi-san but we want to continue eating peacefully, so if you won't mind. I don't want my girlfriend to get stressed now that she got out of the hospital." I cut her words off.
"...girlfriend?" The fan was dumbfounded. Aoi looked at me and I gave her a smile. She immediately understood what was happening.
"Yeah, Shin's my boyfriend." She told Tamaki, confirming what I just said.
"What b-but..." Aoi tilted her head feigning innocence.
"Is there something wrong?" She asked her.
All of her suspicious thoughts about Aoi disappeared and got replaced by her own shame and fear. She looked at me and her eyes went wide. She's a hero fan and I know she knows me. And she knows that she made a mistake.
"I-I'm so sorry. Please excuse me!" She took her journal and pen, and scurried off the floor as quickly as possible.
Then the second floor was left with the three of us, with an awkward silence. I ran my fingers through my hair as I sighed.
"Wow, that was a fantastic way to ruin our breakfast" I chuckled.
"Yeah," Aoi replied with a smile. "Since one of us is very famous and definitely not a great liar."
Shouto looked at Aoi, her eyes were gazing at his with kindness. She wants to understand the reason. "Why didn't you tell me that you've already graduated? Why did you lie?"
"I'm sorry but I couldn't tell you." When Shouto answered that, Aoi's eyes blinked in confusion.
"What?"
"I couldn't tell you."
"Why? Was it about the incident she that the fan talked about? If it's something about me I can understand that."
"It's just very complicated."
"Isn't the fact that I have no memories already complicated?" Her thoughts spoke but all she said was "I can still understand that if you would just tell me--"
"I said I can't tell you about it!" Shouto snapped with a loud and sharp voice. It was so sharp that it surprised Aoi. The kindness and desire to understand in her eyes disappeared.
"Fine, if that's what you want." Her voice was emotionless, and Shouto realized his mistake, he looked down at his food.
"I'm sorry."
"Yeah," She answered with a deadpan voice. Her answer made him feel guilty. He should be.
Shouto reached out for Aoi's hand. She pulled it away before he could touch it and continued eating with an emotion-less face. Her mood had turned sour.
When we finally finished eating in a tensed atmosphere, we left the fast food restaurant. Aoi was the one walking ahead, not letting anyone get close to her. She suddenly stopped her steps. It made me stop too when another sharp pain started pounding her head, making me feel it.
"Aoi!" Shouto ran towards her. He held her but she pulled away.
"Woah! It took you 6 months to visit her?"
"I-I'm fine!" She stated, tolerating her crushing head and took a step forward towards the black car. I followed them behind.
"Aoi, can you hear me?"
"Hey, don't ignore me, Shouto!"
"I hope you wake up soon. I'm so sorry..."
"No, you're not. You're still in pain." Shouto replied.
"Awe~ Shouto is being sweet to Aoi."
"Shut up, Kuroiwa"
"He's still very cold to me though. Aoi, will you give this guy a punch in the gut when you wake up?"
"I said I'm fine!" She stubbornly said.
"Don't be stubborn, Aoi."
"I told you I'm fine!"
"She'll punch your gut first."
"I can dodge~"
When the pain started to disappear, I saw Shouto pulled Aoi's arm, dragging her towards my car.
"What are you doing? Let me go!"
"No, I've had enough. You behave." Shouto snapped.
Her eyes widen, not believing that what he just said. He narrowed his eyes at her. She looked down in response. He continued dragging her to my car. But then she pulled her arm. Shouto didn't let her go. She pulled her arm again, and he glared at her.
"What is wrong with you? Just let me go!" Aoi's voice was full of frustration. She pulled away from him as strong as she could and ran towards me as soon as she got out from his grasp.
Aoi suddenly embraced me, feeling dizzy from her head ache.
"Aoi," Shouto called out.
"I'll walk along side with my boyfriend!" she yelled.
Shouto's eyes widen. He looked at me, and I gave him a smile. He wanted to pull her away from me but he knew that he couldn't. Instead, he sighed and walked to the car.
I looked at this amusing girl embracing me with her face buried on my chest. I couldn't help but smile.
"Awe~ Does my girlfriend love me so much that she wants to be with me all the time?"
She looked up at me. Strands of pale blue hair were on her face. Her sunlight eyes narrowed.
"I know you know that I don't believe that. You just made that up to make the girl leave."
I chuckled while looking at her adorable face. She pulled away, but I pulled her back, hugging her back.
"But what if it's true?"
"Then you're a liar just like him." She held my stomach to push me away but I held her tightly. I wrapped my left arm around her small waist, and moved my other hand to her face.
With one hand, I moved away the messy strands of hair and tucked them behind her ears. I remembered her side bangs parted to her left, it suited her but I like her hair like this more.
"Ugh, let me go already." She grumbled.
"You're the one who wanted to be with your boyfriend."
"Shut up"
"You're not denying it. Am I your boyfriend now?"
She glared at me. "If only I can punch you in your gut so hard right now, I would" You can though.
"Hahahaha. Fine, fine." I let her go. She turned around and walked towards the car. I walked beside her, holding her hand. She ignored it, knowing that it'll only waste her energy to fight with me.
"You know Shouto cares for you, right?" I stated. She didn't say anything. Instead, her hand squeezed mine.
"I know that." Her thoughts replied.
When we arrived, he was already sitting at the front seat, with a cold blank expression. Aoi ignored him and sat at the passenger seat. I sat beside her, and closed the door. Mr. Yamazuki started driving.
Shouto stayed quiet at the front seat while Aoi was leaning against the other car door.
"Aoi." Shouto called her, his voice was no longer cold. She didn't look at him, but it was certain that she's listening. "I'm sorry that I lied. I've already graduated UA."
"But not sorry that you snapped at me?" She wanted to tell that but her mouth remained shut.
"It's a long story why I ended up lying to you but I swear it's for your own good."
"You could've just told the truth, or create a better lie." She finally replied.
"I'm really sorry, Aoi-"
"Yeah, yeah. I understand. I'm tired." She cut off his words, and lay down on the passenger seat, curling herself comfortably to fit on the remaining space of the seat. Her eyes closed.
I looked at Shouto through the view of the side mirror. His face is full of regret. The ride was quiet.
I waited for more than 10 minutes, and I felt Aoi's breath relaxed. I caressed her hair and looked at her, waiting for another 10 minutes, making sure she's sleeping before asking him.
"Now, what's your plan?"
