CHAPTER 3: IUDEX

It had been about fifteen minutes that had passed when the TV on the floor bursted to life, the broken circuits crackling on the floor, as a result of Jiwoo's timely outburst.
The broken LCD flashed white. They couldn't see the screen, but they could hear the words the commentator was saying.

"Alright, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome back from the break. In fact, we have the results from the voting! Would our contestants please step out?"

The door in front of them opened, and this time, they quickly made their way through, because they didn't want to go through what happened last time.
They didn't feel like they wanted to be crushed to death.

The room was like a stage. There was a huge remote camera back up against the wall, and beside it, two people dressed in combatant clothing, which was a pure white colour, and they had white helmets over their heads.
They stood out in the room, it it was painted in wacky colours, almost like a candy land of some sort. Or contemporary art.
And in the combatant's hands, there were guns. They were pointed straight at the group as they made their way into the room.

"Contestants, please take a space under a light!" The commentator said.

There were five huge lights mounted on the ceiling, casting circles of lights on specific places on the floor.
Each of them took a separate one, all while eyeing the two people with caution.

The commentator droned on.
"Ah.. well! Welcome to the third game, contestants! After this, you're officially half way there!"

He clapped his hands together, and told them the rules.

"Our viewers have inputted their votes during the commercial break! The gist is simple. Four of you will live, and one will die. It's the choice of our viewers, not me! Now, let's see what they've chosen!"

The lights started flashing, adding a sort of suspense to the game.

Their hearts started gripping in fear. One of them would die.
Because of other people.
And it would all be because of a vote poll.

"Now, let me read out our contestants' names; Jiwoo, Haewon, Lily, Sullyoon and Kyujin. All five have been included with a vote poll, in which our viewers chose whom their favourite one was! The person with the least amount isn't worth keeping, right? So why not make use of them by giving them a great, amazing and brilliant way to die?"

He came up to the camera, like an excited five year old.
"And, you know what? Let's bring it back to the classics! We prepared a firing range, isn't that just spectacular? And this time, the other contestants can see it for themselves!" He said.

He was so close to the camera that the lens steamed up under his breath.

"So, let's count the votes!"

Their hearts felt like they were about to thump out of their chests.

He read out the results.

"In first place, Haewon. You are safe from elimination."

Haewon held back tears. She was so glad.

"... in second place, Sullyoon."

Sullyoon let her long awaited breath out. She was so petrified that she felt scared to even breathe.

"... in third place, Lily."

And, with that, it meant that there was two people left.
And one of them was about to die.

Either Jiwoo, or Kyujin.

The commentator paused a bit, adding suspense. The buzzing noise of silence covered the room, so quiet that even lifting a finger could break it.

He straightened up his tie, and coughed.

And he read out the results.

"And the final person not eliminated... is..."

The suspense was great. Nobody moved.
Jiwoo and Kyujin closed their eyes, tears of worry streaming down their faces.

"I can't believe there was such a marginal difference! So close, both of them were!" The commentator said midway.

The lights of Haewon, Lily and Sullyoon stopped flashing, and instead returned to the normal bright white.

But Jiwoo's and Kyujin's were still flashing, as they awaited for the final name to be called out.

"And the last person saved from elimination is..."

"...Kyujin."

All the lights stopped, and all of them being a bright white except for Jiwoo's, which was red.

A door on the side bursted open, a cluster of white armour-plated guards rushed out, grabbing each contestant by the arms, and dragging them down just in front of a stage.

Jiwoo, however, was brought up on the stage, kicking and screaming her lungs out. She was crying, and tears were streaming down her face.

"NO!!! NO!!!" She yelled.

"JIWOO-"
"STOP IT-"
"YOU CAN'T DO THIS!!!"
"NO- STOP!!!"

The other four were screaming, trying to get out.
They were going to kill Jiwoo, right in front of them.

Sullyoon kicked the guards next to her, but they responded with a punch to the face, leaving her nose tingling and bleeding.

"SHUT UP!" He demanded.

He pulled a small pistol from his belt, and held it against Sullyoon's head.

"Anyone thinking of rebelling is getting lead in their brains..." he said menacingly.

And that was enough to silence the rest of them.
They watched on, tears building in their eyes. Kyujin kept hers closed.

The two men beside Jiwoo held her still, and another walked up in front of her, wielding a gun.
Jiwoo closed her eyes, and braced herself. She accepted her fate.

The guard raised the gun.
And he shot her.

And she went limp, the bullet piercing right through her abdomen.
They let her fall to the ground, dead.

Haewon bursted into tears. Kyujin went a sickly pale. Sullyoon closed her eyes, her eyes stinging from tears.

One of the men picked her up from the floor, dragging her by her underarms, her shoes grating along the ground.
Jiwoo was carried off, pulled through the metal doors. The other men let go of the remaining contestants, and left, the door shutting behind them.

The TV blared to life.

"What a spectacular, spectacular ending! Oh, how their faces looked! But, stay tuned, it'll only get better from now! Off to the next one, contestants!"

Behind them, a double-door hatch opened.

Haewon looked at the metal door they had taken Jiwoo through, nodding a quick goodbye.
And they exited.
