Chapter 1

"Ruby Rose!"

Ruby cringed as her slightly older twin's voice broke the silence of their home. The younger girl turned to face her sister, the latter having a disapproving look on her face.

"H-hey, Lily. What're you doing up so early?" Ruby stuttered. Lilith was not amused.

"I know you've been sneaking out to see her, Ruby. I tell you over and over that I don't want you to, but you just blow me off! Do you know how that feels, Ruby?" Lilith questioned, her voice rising ever so slightly.

Ruby rolled her eyes. "I will do what I want, when I want, Lilith. You can't really stop me." The younger brunette replied. Lilith flushed with anger.

Satisfied that she'd won the argument, Ruby turned and opened the door. "I'll give you a choice, Ruby." Lilith's voice drifted to Ruby. The girl stopped, and turned to face her twin. Lilith's good eye was looking at the floor, her left hand moving up to touch the patch covering her ruined left eye.

"You can stay, or you can go and see Weiss." Ruby scoffed. Before she could leave, however, Lilith spoke up again.

"If you leave, I'm packing your bags. You will no longer have a place here."

Ruby gaped at Lilith, the words like a slap to the face. Lilith's gaze became clouded.

When the door slammed, Lilith smiled. She looked up, and opened her mouth to speak, but the words died in her throat.

Ruby had left.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was about three days later that Lilith noticed the petals. A few here, a few there. Not in large numbers, but they were certainly there.

Then, things started going missing.

Ordinarily, Lilith would have suspected Blake, because Yang liked to goade the girl into snatching things. The object in question would usually turn up a couple days later, in some random part of the house, with an apology note attached.

A week passed, and nothing reappeared. The petals grew in number.

Then, one night, it happened. Something fell, and it shattered. Lilith was ripped from her dream, and practically slapped back into reality.

After pulling a bat from her closet, Lilith silently slipped down the stairs. Hearing a string of obscenities and a few VERY creative names for what Lilith assumed was a plate that had fallen, the girl rounded the corner.

And almost ran face-first into Weiss.

Both girls screamed, and Lilith slammed the bat into Weiss' head. The white-haired girl crumpled to the floor like a sack of rocks.

Lilith scoffed. "'Graceful' my foot." She grumbled. When the girl reached the kitchen, she had a pretty good idea of who was looting her house.

Upon spotting the intruder, Lilith stomped her foot, took a deep breath, and shouted "RUBY ROSE!!!!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the police finally came, Lilith should have known Yang would be one of the first to arrive. When the blonde model and her wife, Blake, the latter being a police officer, arrived, Lilith knew she'd have some explaining to do.
After about an hour, Yang, Blake, Ruby, Weiss, and Lilith sat in Lilith's living room.
Yang tapped her foot rapidly, wisps of steam curling off her skin and hair. Blake's human ears sat inert, whilst the cat ears atop her head flicked left and right, like they were trying to escape the girl's head.
"So, lemme get this straight. Ruby decided she wanted to date a girl, you didn't like the girl, so you kicked Ruby out of the house?" Yang demanded. Blake gently laid her hand on Yang's knee, in an effort to get the girl to stop bouncing, and calm down a bit.
Ruby and Weiss sat next to each other, both looking guilty. Lilith sat on the far side of the room, her right eye clouded with anger.
"I told her that I didn't want her sneaking out to see that priss, and yet, she did it anyways. I laid out rules when Ruby moved in, and so far, Ruby has broken most of, if not all of them. Finally, I told her that if she left one more time, I'd kick her out." Lilith explained, probably for the 15th time that night.
Ruby groaned in annoyance, but was silenced by a glare from Lilith.
"I want you to return EVERYTHING you stole from me, Ruby." The elder twin hissed. Yang and Blake looked at Ruby, who looked like she was trying to sink into the couch.
A few minutes later, Yang was digging through Ruby's backpack, despite the girl's protests. Already, Yang had pulled out 7 things that belonged to Lilith, while Ruby swore up and down that they belonged to her, not Lilith.
Finally, Yang turned the bag upside down, and about twelve stacks of money fell out of the bag, along with Lilith's wallet, cellphone, and car keys.
The eldest twin was beyond livid.
"What the hell is wrong with you, Ruby?!?!?!?" Lilith screamed. Ruby mumbled something, and pretty soon, the squabble turned into a full-on screaming match, with Weiss holding Ruby back and Yang doing the same to Lilith.
It was bound to go wrong, however, when Ruby kicked Weiss' knee, and the girl folded in pain. Ruby lunged at her twin, and Lilith broke away from Yang in time to tackle Ruby to the ground.
Both girls screamed in rage and pain, rolling on the floor like a wrestling match.
Suddenly, Lilith's cry of agony ripped through the air, and Ruby stood up, holding the girl's eyepatch in her right hand.
When Lilith stood, Weiss gagged in the back of the room, while Blake and Yang looked away. Breathing hard, Lilith glared at her twin, and blood dripped from her heavily scarred and ruined left eye. Ruby looked at her hand, which was wet with blood.
Ruby dropped the eyepatch, her face contorting in horror.
"THIS IS WHY I HATE WEISS, RUBY!!!!" Lilith screamed. "BECAUSE SHE DID THIS TO ME!!! SHE AND HER FAMILY TOOK MY EYE!!!!" Blake reached over to touch Lilith's arm, but Lilith ripped her arm away.
Lilith took a deep breath in.
She placed her left hand over her bleeding eye, and began to speak, her voice dripping with malice and hate.
"Ruby, from this day forward, you are no longer a Rose. You are no longer my sister."
Ruby's eyes widened, and she dropped to her knees. Lilith pointed to the door.
"All of you, out. I don't want to see Ruby or Weiss ever again." Lilith snarled, pain evident in her voice.
Weiss gently took Ruby's hand and led her out of the house. Yang made a sound of disbelief, but when she whirled on Lilith, presumably to let loose a string of colorful names for the girl, the words died on her tongue when she saw Lilith sit down hard on the couch, her left hand over her eye, and tears streaming freely from her right eye.
Lilith let out a choked sob, and Yang's heart broke. Her younger sister's facade had finally fallen apart, leaving only the broken shell of a person that Lilith had become when she lost her eye.
Blake sat with Lilith as the girl tried her hardest to pull herself back together, with little success. The raven-haired girl rubbed gentle circles into Lilith's back, and the brunette gradually calmed down, then fell asleep on Blake's shoulder.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When the brunette girl woke up the next morning, Blake was asleep next to her, and Yang had fallen asleep on the couch across from them.

Suddenly, a bolt of pain ripped through Lilith's skull, and she cried out, falling to the floor with her hands holding her eye.

Blake was up right away, and within moments, had bandaged the still-bleeding eye and given Lilith painkillers.

"I was actually on my way to give these back when you called 911." Blake explained softly, like she was talking to a scared kitten. Lilith nodded slowly, not wanting any more pain.

Yang groaned, signalling she was now awake, and propped herself up to look at her sister and girlfriend.

"How's that eye, Lil?" Yang mumbled sleepily. Lilith didn't reply.

Yang rolled off the couch, and shook her long blond hair, which had that 'I just woke up, and I STILL look better than you ever will' look, which was probably why Yang was a model.

The tall girl strode over, hugged Blake, whispered something in the ravenette's ear, and sat down next to her sister, enveloping the one-eyed girl in a hug.

Lilith's right eye began to fill with tears, and she hugged her older sister as tightly as she could, not trusting herself to speak.

Then, there came a knock at the door.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thirty minutes later, Ruby was still standing outside, explaining AGAIN why Lilith should come outside to see her.
When the slightly older girl came out, Ruby was shocked to see how much older her twin looked. Lilith looked beyond exhausted, like just being around her twin was sapping her of energy.
Ruby opened her mouth to speak, but Lilith walked over, and lifted her arm. Ruby, seeing the gesture, and remembering past experiences, rushed over to her sister for a hug.
She received a hard slap instead.
Recoiling, Ruby had just enough time to see Lilith's front door slam shut, and she heard the lock click. Dejected, Ruby shuffled away, her breath clouding in front of her.
With her back on the inside of the door, Lilith slid downwards until she was seated on the floor. Her hand and eye throbbed, and her mind slowly slid down the rabbit hole of dark thoughts.
Instead of doing the things her inner voice told her, she held her head in her hands and began to cry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Lilith did WHAT?!?!?!?" Taiyang, their father, shouted. Lilith flinched away from the man, looking more like a broken doll than ever.

Being a single father was tough, so Raven, Yang's mother, had moved back into the house to help raise Tai's three daughters.

Raven stood behind Taiyang, talking to Yang, whose skin was beginning to steam. They were arguing about something, probably Taiyang's treatment of Lilith.

When Taiyang finally finished with yelling, he looked down at his daughter. When he did, he saw the broken girl that Lilith had been oh-so-long ago.

He moved closer to Lilith, who flinched away from him. Yang and Raven stopped arguing long enough to see the girl flinch away from her father, and slowly exit the room.

When Lilith left, Blake silently followed. After a couple moments of silence, Lilith's shrieks ripped through the silence. When Yang ran into Lilith's room, the girl was in the middle of the room, holding her head, screaming and crying hysterically.

Blake sat behind Lilith, her ears flattened against her head. "Shhh. It's ok. None of them are real, Lily." Blake said, like a mother talking to a frightened child.

"The voices! They won't stop screaming at me!!! GET THEM OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!" Lilith shrieked, before breaking down into unintelligible babbling, incoherent screaming, and loud sobs.

"Kicking Ruby out did this to her?" Tai asked, making Yang jump. The man had a habit of walking up to people totally silently, only noticed when he spoke.

"Probably the feeling of betrayal. She trusted Ruby with everything her fragile little heart could muster. Having Ruby do this AND re-injure her eye must have destroyed her." Raven muttered, barely audible over the sound of Lilith's screaming.

Several hours later, Lilith had finally run out of tears to shed. Now, she just sat there, staring at her walls. Yang and Blake had sent Tai and Raven to their respective homes, and the two young women took care of Lilith.

When Blake walked into the room with food, Lilith let out a terrified scream, and scrambled away. Blake set down the plate, and hurried out of the room, trying not to cry.

When Yang walked in, Lilith shielded her face, like she had done the first time.

"Lily, sweetie, it's ok. I'm your sister, and your eye needs to get cleaned. Can I do that, kiddo?" Yang asked softly. The brunette slowly nodded, and lowered her arm ever so slightly.

The scene was so painfully familiar, Yang lost herself in a flashback.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Six years ago...
Yang stood with her arms wrapped around Blake's waist. She had her chin resting on the top of Blake's head, and was so distracted by the peacefulness of the moment that Blake had to flick the girl with her ears.
"Yang, are you even listening?" Blake asked, amusement in her voice. Yang sighed.
"Like I was saying," Blake continued. "It's awful what they've done to these kids. Schnee Pharmaceuticals used these kids like lab rats. There was a girl that looked a little bit like-" Blake was cut off when her radio went off.
When Blake raced over, and was talking to her fellow officers, Yang's phone went off. When she picked it up, the caller I.D revealed it was not someone in her contacts.
"This is Yang Xiao Long, model extraordinaire. What can I do for you today?" Yang chirped.
"Miss Xiao Long, we need you over at the hospital. We have someone here who refuses to speak to anyone but you." A man, presumably a nurse or doctor said.
"I'll be right there." Yang said, her bubbly mood evaporating. She grabbed her jacket and keys, then left the house. Fifteen minutes later, she was pulling up to the hospital.
Walking into the reception area, the blonde model approached the front desk. "Oh, Miss Xiao Long. Doctor Ironwood is waiting for you." The receptionist chirped. Yang smiled at her, and made her way further into the hospital.
"Yang." Recognizing her father's voice, Yang spun around with a smile on her face. "What'd you do this time, Dad? Fall and break your hip?" Yang asked with mock disappointment. The look on her father's face killed the mood.
"H-hey, is everything OK?" Yang stuttered. Taiyang shook his head.
Then, a startled cry shattered the silence. Yang and her father whipped around, only to see a very exhausted looking police officer stumble into the room, with Blake close behind. Neither looked in the mood for jokes.
Behind them, a girl followed closely, and when Yang saw her, her vision blurred with tears.
It was her little sister, Lilith. Ruby's twin.
Yang dropped to her knees, and Lilith ran to her. The girls clung to each other like they were the other person's lifeline.
When Lilith looked up, the first thing Yang noticed was the eyepatch, and the flecks of ice blue in her silver iris.
"What happened, Blake?" Yang sobbed.
"Schee Pharma. Testing of some new drugs." Blake replied.
"They took her eye!!!" Yang exclaimed.
"Supposedly, it was for another drug, which was supposed to regenerate new wounds. It didn't." Blake replied again.
"Excuse me?" A small voice drifted into the room, and Lilith froze. Yang looked down at her sister only to see one emotion in the girl's remaining eye.
Pure, unfiltered, undiluted terror.
Yang looked up, and saw only a pale, skinny girl, about 20, at most. She had ice blue eyes and snow white hair. Despite being pale and skinny, she seemed perfectly healthy.
"You seem to have my little sister. I'd like her back, please." The girl said, smiling at the group.
Lilith, with every muscle in her body as tense as humanly possible, pushed herself closer to Yang.
"Lilith is my little sister. I think you have the wrong person." Yang said. The pale girl giggled.
"Commoners like you are so funny. No, she's not my sister by blood, but daddy promised that I could have any of the children I wanted, and I chose her. I'd like my sister, now." The pale girl said.
Yang stood, steam curling off her skin. Her eyes turned crimson, and her vision became tinted with red.
"I don't think I was clear, miss. Lilith is MY sister." Yang snarled, pure venom dripping from each of her words. The pale girl let out a light, airy laugh.
Then, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a bag. Whatever it was, Lilith shrieked and tried to scramble away like she was possessed.
When Yang's eyes focused, all her rage vanished.
Inside the bag was Lilith's left eye.
Several things happened at once.
The only thing Yang remembered after was being restrained by hospital staff, and the pale girl lying in the corner of the room, blood dripping from her mouth and nose, with her jaw twisted slightly. Rage burned in the girl's eyes.
Lilith was screaming something about voices in her head, and was running around trying to attack the people restraining Yang. Something about not letting them take her sister.
And then, a single voice split the air, startling everyone.
"ENOUGH!!!!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Suddenly, Yang was brought back to reality by Lilith tugging on her hand. Yang smiled at Lilith, then wrapped her in a tight hug. "I'm sorry, Lily...I'm so sorry..." Yang whispered, tears forming in her eyes. Eventually, they began sliding down the model's cheeks, and her shoulders shook as Yang silently sobbed.

Lilith placed a single, cold hand on Yang's cheek, and Yang's head jerked up to see a smiling Lilith, her eyes finally clear of the madness that had overtaken her in the recent weeks.

"I'm back, Yang." Lilith said quietly. Her right eye transfixed Yang's gaze, like a little slice of the moon resided in Lilith's eye socket.

Sure, what had been done to her couldn't be undone, but as long as nobody could hurt her again, that was just as good, right?

When all the tears had been shed, and apologies exchanged, Lilith picked up her phone.

The screen read: 30+ missed calls from 'Rubles'

Lilith's breath caught in her throat. Instinctively, her hand went up to her left eye.

Instead of putting the device down, she dialed a number and raised the phone to her ear.

"Hey, Ruby. Been a while."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lilith and Ruby sat across from one another at Penny's Coffee Shop. Ruby and Lilith were good friends of Penny's, so they'd often go to sort out their problems there.
Today, however, the twins couldn't have looked more different. Ruby had dark circles around her eyes, and her hair was wild and unkempt. She was jumpy, and looked paranoid.
Lilith, however, looked better than ever. Her hair was a little longer than she liked it, but that was ok with Lilith. For the first time in a long time, there was no dull ache in her empty eye socket, and her gaze was filled with contentment.
"Everything OK, Ruby?" Lilith asked, causing Ruby to jump.
"Y-yeah, Lily. H-hey, I know this is a weird question, b-but do you have any m-money?" Ruby asked, her bloodshot eyes darting left and right.
Lilith looked a little closer, and noticed some white flecks on the collar of Ruby's shirt. Then, her eyes widened as she connected the dots.
Lilith pulled away from her sister.
"Ruby, are you doing drugs?" Lilith asked. Ruby's roaming gaze snapped to her twin, her eyes wider than saucers.
"H-how did you-" Ruby then noticed the powder on her shirt, and paled. Lilith sighed.
She placed a 10 dollar bill on the table, and Ruby grabbed for it like a starving child grabbing for food. Lilith grabbed her sister's wrists, and only let go when Penny grabbed the money and left.
"Ruby, you need help. I want you in rehab by the time I see you next. OK?" Lilith asked. Ruby nodded dumbly. The sisters hugged, and as Lilith walked away, she heard Ruby call Weiss to ask for a ride.
Lilith chuckled. Maybe, deep down, Ruby would never change.
