Chapter 3: Deceit

It had been a few days since Liam first woken up. He was still confused but the idea of this place soon grew on him. It's not like he had a reason not to trust airy. I mean, he was being nice to him. So far anyway...

Right now he was seated outside by a fire. It was about 9:30 pm, and airy had gone to get more fire wood. Liam watched the fire dance in the wind. The bright orange flame would soon dim if airy didn't come back with kindling for the fire soon.

It was kind of cold. Not too Frigid right now because of the fire, but it was still chilly. He pulled his knees close. There was a bit of anxiety stirring inside him. But it didn't matter to Liam right now, he just ignored it.

"I'm so... tired all the time..." Liam sighed slightly annoyed "I wonder if it's because of the fall? I obviously hurt myself... and I'm sore everywhere too so... maybe it's just the injuries."

He wanted to believe that it was a good thing that he knew the answer. But deep down Liam knew that being tired from physical trauma is not good. In fact it's less good then not knowing the answer. Because this could mean he's dying. That he knew he could be could be dying. And without a proper hospital he'd be done for.

He looked up at the sky. He was so tired. Surely this wasn't good. His anxiety began to grow. This really wasn't good... But then he heard footsteps behind him. Liam turned his head in response.

"Hey... I uhh, brought the wood." Airy calmly smiled placing some of the wood in the fire then sitting on the log opposite from Liam.

Liam worriedly watched the fire roar and flare upwards as wood was added to it. The sparks being carried away by the wind.

"Is... something wrong?" Airy asked. A bit concerned.

"I'm just worried about my injuries..." Liam confessed, Sitting back.

"They aren't fatal...? Why are you worried?"

"What if they are? There are no hospitals here... You said it's just forest forever."

"Yeahhh..." Airy looked away.

"Wait... if it's just forests forever, and there are no hospitals, how do I even know what a hospital is?" Liam asked himself.

"Uhh..." Airy said getting nervous from his realization. "How about we go pick some berries...? I bet you're... uhh... hungry?" Airy said, standing up.

"I guess..." Liam answered. Concerned that airy dodged the question.

Airy lead Liam into the woods. The fire inside Airy's glass head lit up so they could see. They needed to cross the small bridge. Actually... it was more of a couple planks then a bridge. Liam was worried.

"Uhh... I don't know about this..." Liam mumbled.

"It's fine. Just... don't look down." Airy answered walking across the board.

Liam followed carefully. One foot after the other. Before he knew it he had crossed safely. He breathed a sigh of relief then jogged to catch up with Airy.

"What berries are safe to pick?" Liam asked.

"The red ones... and the pink ones... The blue ones need to be... cooked first." He replied.

"Alright..."

Liam helped Airy pick berries

Most of the contestants were asleep at this time. Airy hadn't been back to host the show in a while.

And...

Still no sign of Liam.

Amelia was still awake, Bryce too. Bryce still felt bad for yelling at Amelia he looked at her from across the grass. Then stood and walked towards her.

"You don't need to apologize." Amelia looked at him. "It's okay. I get it. You're upset."

"No— I shouldn't have yelled at you... I not only made you feel bad. I also disregarded your feelings. I'm sorry." Bryce apologized anyway.

Amelia's face brightened up a bit, and she turned towards Bryce. "You really didn't have to—."

"No really. I mean it, thanks for uhh... helping me look... Even if we haven't found anything." He sat next to her.

"O-oh. No problem." She sighed. Bringing her knees up, and wrapping her arms around them.

Bryce laid back on the grass. "Agh... I'm so tired..." He muttered under his breath.

"Hm? What was that?" She looked back.

"Nothing. Just tired." He answered.

"Haha... You should get some sleep then." She nervously giggled.

"Nah... I don't think I could even if I wanted to."

"Why?"

"I just got a headache from all this yelling, Yknow?"

"What Airy said right before he left..." Amelia started. "What do you think he meant by that?"

"You mean when he had hurt Liam?"

"Yeah..."

"He said something about a 'permanent fix' I think. Why do you ask?"

"That's probably got something to do with this." She leaned a bit more forward.

"I know that much... I—." He nearly choked on his words. "I hope he didn't kill Liam."

"What?! No—! He wouldn't!" Amelia shove Bryce away. "He wouldn't do that!"

"How do you know?" Bryce spat, sitting up again.

"I— I..." her eyes narrowed. "I just do...! don't talk like that!"

"I'm sorry... I just—."

"I know Bryce. You're worried." She yawned. Lying back. "I am too."

Bryce leaned his face on his fist. Then bit his lip. "Yeah..."

"Just get some sleep..." Amelia mumbled. "I have a good feeling about tomorrow."

"You think so?" Bryce looked over.

"Yeah..."

Amelia looked at the sky.

"Tomorrow will be different."
