Chapter 28

A few hours later in a swanky restaurant bathroom on the outskirts of Dresdale.

Evelyn stared at the woman who wobbled her way into the bathroom and practically staggered into a stall. She frowned as the sound of retching filled the enclosure.

She stared at the stall in the mirror before her as she continued to redo her make-up. She darted her eyes to her compact as the door opened and out came Elizabeth Cadwell very much worse for wear.

She quietly watches as she stumbled to the sink turn on the tap and rinsed her face and mouth. With a casual move, she reached for some paper towels and gave them to her.

She took them with a mumbled thanks and dabbed her face as Evelyn contemplated how to best play these cards in her favour.

"I don't mean to be nosy but are you ok?"

The concern in her voice caused a red-eyed, smeared face Elizabeth to pause in her efforts to dry her mess of a face and trembling hands and look to her.

Her face showed care and her eyes seemed warm. Her hands even reached out to touch her comfortingly on her shoulder.

"Do you know me?" Elizabeth slurred.

Should she lie by pretending not to or should she be honest? The last thing she needed was the chance to slip away. She was going to do whatever it takes to knock Wendy Preston from her pedestal and what better way to do that than a woman scorned.

"Yes I know who you are I would be living in a cave if I didn't, but am not being polite because of who you are. I just genuinely want to know that you're ok," she said softly looking intently at the woman who seemed to be weighing her judgements through her imbibe mind.

"Listen am fine," she said with a dismissive wave of her well-manicured fingers.

Stupid of her to think she was going to just turn and walk away from this not when she waited for the opportunity that would trash the high and mighty Wendy Preston and teach her a lesson. She would show her that claiming a big fish from the ocean did not make her any better than being the black bimbo she always is.

Evelyn returned to her makeup dragging out the process of retouching her flawless application as long as she could. As she stood there pretending to ignore Elizabeth or the other females that came into the bathroom on occasion she tossed with various ways how to get the woman to lighten up to her.

Her mind was still racing when she places from her clutch a compact and a pen with her workplace logo on the sink top and glared in her clutch as if looking for something and mumbling in aggravation when not finding it, she reached to replace them when Elizabeth stated.

"You work for Deacon Ffrench."

"Yes, I do?"

And that was how she got the cards to play in her favour.

"You know that arrogant, self-centred egotistical bastard broke up with me for his office help!" she snapped.

She pretended to act uncomfortable and make as if to not want to discuss the issue but Elizabeth was not through releasing all the pent up anger and grudge she had walking around with.

"Me of all the persons," she said with a scowl as she poked her scantily clad chest, "he had the nerve to walk away from me like I was nothing to him or what we had meant nothing."

"We can never understand men, they seem to only want to take women for granted," she added as if empathizing.

Elizabeth who had made some attempt at getting her face in order glared over at her and nod her head in drunken agreement.

"Don't say I said this but he tends to use women," she whispered, "I assure you I was more than shocked when I heard that he was going to marry Wendy Preston. I wonder what she has over him that those other women did not."

"The dirty bastard is going to pay for discarding me like thrash," Elizabeth said venomously caught up in her own misfortune.

Elizabeth was loving this and she played it like a well-rehearsed opera.

"Come to think of it no woman has ever monopolies Mr Ffrench until Wendy Preston surely she is the culprit here."

She watched as the bloodshot eyes of Elizabeth fought to take on a perceptive glare as she fought to gain control of her bruised ego. Evelyn could not help the jubilation with this new twist in the scenario brought for her.

"I believe she has something over him, something that once exposed will get you your lover back. I must admit I often thought you to be the best couple. You complemented each other so well."

Evelyn could see the gears spinning around in Elizabeth alcohol hazed brain and she wanted to dance in delight. Her manipulation was fueling her with further confidence and now that she had the upper hand she was going to sink it hook line and sinker.

"I think she's pregnant maybe she managed to use that to get her way."

Elizabeth slammed the mascara she had in her hand on the sink and it went bouncing into the face basin to lay there broken.

"Damn him!" she growled. "Damn him to hell!"

Evelyn could not get over her good fortune and it took all her willpower not to burst out in a happy jig. She pulls herself together and pulled the now crying Elizabeth to her in a hug as she whispers soothing nothings to her.

They were gathering a few curious stares and she pulled slightly away from her and said. "Come on pull yourself together, we are going to get this all worked out."

Elizabeth looked into Evelyn face seeing at that moment a friend and a confidant. She was too bitter with her rejection, and other personal issues as well as being drunk to see that she was only prey.

"I don't know you but thanks," she said pulling away. "I best return to the girls."

Evelyn watched as Elizabeth stuffed her makeup in her gold chained shoulder bag and made to move for the door but another bout of nausea assailed her as she staggered against the edge of the marbled sink.

With steady hands, Evelyn reaches for her but in a rush of long limbs and a not again she rushed to another stall sending whatever liquor remained in her spilling in heaving gasps.

Evelyn glanced about her and quickly pull her phone out of her bag and took a rather telltale picture of the unsuspecting model who was too caught up in her dilemma to be aware of nothing but her hurt and despair.

A few curious persons peered in on Elizabeth and Evelyn being the newfound friend shooed them away telling them there was nothing here for them to see.

"Hey let's get out of here," she said reaching for the broken figure of Elizabeth.

"I'm going to get rid of it," she whispered.

Evelyn knew what she meant.

"No!" she said harshly then added in a softer tone. "That child needs to be here, he or she was conceived for a purpose."

"He doesn't want it," she said dejectedly.

"We'll see to it that he does," Evelyn said leading her from the restroom feeling as alive as the bustled her captive hastily from the packed restaurant.

Just when you thought things couldn't get better, life turns out to prove you wrong. With a smile of delight, she held the now dozing Elizabeth leaning into her. She was going to show them no one treat her like garbage.

Outside the opulent restaurant Classique Pallet in the cool breezy evening Evelyn hailed a cab and gave him her address. As Elizabeth slumped onto the seat snoring softly she giggled with delight as the cab drove away.

Who would have thought treating herself to an evening of overly priced dinner and a some what staid entertainment would have turned out this adventurous?

She made a mental note to have her car picked up  later.

Hey, darlings 🙂

Wendy was right about Evelyn, she is a leech feeding off peoples affairs to use to her selfish misguided advantage, but the seeds we sow them shall we reap right...?
