The New Kid in Town

5 days. Even though it felt like years had passed it had only been 5 days since me and my mother moved into Faraway town. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful, and the suburban area seemed to be quite secluded from the rest of the world, the odd car driving across its roads. The house we moved into was small, but still big enough to satisfy both me and my mother happily. The neighbourhood was nice and the neighbours we had seemed friendly, although we only met one of them. The neighbours on our right side were very separated and probably didn't even know people had moved in next to them, but I honestly didn't mind one bit.

I woke up in the early morning on my 6th day in the house to a heavy knock at the front door (whilst my mother was at work). I made myself seem more decent before answering the door, and at my doorstep was... a boy. Shorter than me, tanned skin, brunette, bright and cheery smile.

I smiled back before he spoke loudly, "Hey! You're the new kid, right??"

"Yeah?" I nodded.

"Cool! Are you free to hang out? I could introduce you to the town plaza, the park, we could even visit some of my old friends!"

I thought for a while. Yeah I had some chores I needed doing, and I still needed to unpack all of my things from the clustered boxes... but you only get these kinds of opportunities once.

"Yeah, why not?"

"Hell yeah! Come on-"

"Hold on, give me a minute to change..."

I left the door open but went upstairs to quickly change. Afterwards I headed back out the door, making sure to lock it behind me, and I hastily followed the kid through the empty streets. His pace was very quick, also so quick that I struggled to keep up, but I made it work as we approached the plaza.

"Oh, I almost forgot! My name's Kel, my brother Hero is off at college right now so I'm just kinda bored most of the time. What about you?"

I was taken aback by his sudden talkative attitude but answered his question quickly.

"I'm y/n..."

"Oh, interesting! Well I hope we can be good friends in the near future!"

We finished the slightly awkward small talk just as we entered a shop called Hobeez. The place seemed to sell all sorts of things. From Comic books to Polaroid Cameras to even old-style cookbooks of the wildest variety. We soon left the shop without buying anything and yet again hastily made our way to the next destination; the Faraway Park.

Upon arrival I instantly saw a tall girl standing around a group of others of varied heights, weights, ethnicities, etc. The girl was pale, had pink medium-length hair adorned with a simple turquoise bow that matched her teal eyes. In her hands was a baseball bat, which made me slightly concerned but nonetheless interested.

"Ugh," muttered Kel, pointing towards the group, "Those are the Hooligans. The girl with the pink hair, Aubrey, used to be my friend before... something came up. But now she runs a gang of bullies who try to intimate the other kids here as much as they'd like."

I nodded in agreement, I knew there had to be some sort of bully group in the town; it wouldn't be a real suburban neighbourhood without a couple of ruthless bullies ready to smack a kid over a bag of candy.

Aubrey looked over her shoulder at the two of us and smiled with some sort of malicious intent. She soon found herself walking towards us too.

"Well if it isn't Kel, the kid who doesn't even know basic math. And who's this? Some random child you decided to drag around with your bullshit?"

"No Aubrey, this is the newbie that lives in that ex-vacant house far down the South of the Town. Their name is y/n,"

I nodded again in agreement with Kel, and Aubrey smirked.

"Y/n, huh? Well I hope you know who you're talking to now. Don't get on my bad side though, you don't know what I've been through or what might happen to you..."

Aubrey shoved past me, followed by the rest of the Hooligans. As soon as they were out of earshot however, me and Kel heard a light hummed tune from the back of the park. Me and Kel looked at each other as if to say 'you heard that too, right?', before Kel spoke up.

"Wanna go investigate?"

"Might as well,"

We both gingerly headed towards a shadowed clearing at the far end of the park and spotted a figure sat underneath an oak tree reading through what looked like a photo album of different polaroids. Kel attempted to speak to the person as we inched closer, but they almost immediately raised their head, looking at us with a disturbed and confused, yet innocent, face.

They had pale skin, blonde messy hair with a flower placed neatly in the messiness, and simple yet sophisticated clothing. Their eyes, though full of confusion, were a beautiful shade of light blue. And of course I caught myself staring for an unbearably long time at the kid whilst Kel attempted to explain himself.

The kid was cute to be completely honest... I just hope he doesn't think we're weird or something...
