Please don't...

The evacuation was going smoothly, but I still heard the final cries of Undyne. Her voice, her words....at least she died a hero. The battle gave me time to set and activate the evacuation.

I was helping when I heard the main door open. I jumped, swerving to see Sans holding Cristle. He looked heartbroken; I immediately feared for the worst.

Running to them, I was relieved to see the girl was only sleeping. "S-sans?", I asked. He broke out of his state and looked towards me. "al, i, i need your help.", he stuttered. The skeleton took a deep breath and explained, "i heard about the evacuation. just, take cristle and keep her safe. she's....she's the only light i have left."

Sans gently handed me the still sleeping girl. I took her, but asked, "W-W-Wait! Wha-what ab-about you?" The little girl, who was surprisingly light, in my arms started stirring. Her father reached out for her hand and held it, calming her down. He sighed, using a thumb to stroke her hand. "they need to be stopped. i can't think of what that manic world do if they met the surface. so," "Sans." "if it came down to it," "Sans," "i would stop them." "Sans!", I whisper-yelled. "Are-are you even listening to yo-yourself?! Th-they could k-k-k-kill you!"

"..." His silence filled the room, thickening the tension. The skeleton just stared at the child, thinking to himself. "i know that. like i said before, i would only do try if it came down to it. there's still time." His tone was lightly positive, still looking for a trace of optimism.

"but....please, al. please take care of her. and please, i'm begging you, keep her away from the cameras. because if it ever comes down to it, and i can't stop them, don't let her see.", his voice and tone we're desperate; in his eyes was a look of determination that showed he wasn't going to be convinced otherwise.

I didn't know what to say. I sighed in thought. It really was the least I could do for him, especially now. This kid meant the world to him, and yet he was still going to try and save what could be millions of others. "O-ok. Bu-but, please t-t-try to co-come b-back.", I stammered.

With a glimpse of happiness, he smiled softly. Sans then walked more towards Cristle and used the other hand to run through her white hair. He kissed her forehead gently, breathing faltering for a moment. "thank you. thank you so, so much.", he muttered to me. Letting go of her hand, he whispered to her, "papa needs to go right now, but no matter what, i'll always come back, ok?" But before she could wake up, he had already teleported away.

I took a deep breath, running into the lab, where the rest of the monsters were being evacuated to. As soon as I left, Mettaton rolled upstairs.

Then, the entrance opened again.

At the hallway, silent tears escaped my eyesockets. That was the most difficult decision I think I ever had to make; and it will stay that way for years to come.

I leaned against the pillar and rested, but couldn't stop the tears. I heard the whir of a camera in a nearby area, but it only caused my single thought to accelerate, to the point when the question swarmed my head; it drowned any other senses.

What have I done?
