Zainab's hands grew clammy as she settled into the familiar embrace of the living room, flanked by her parents. The gentle illumination from the evening lamp enveloped them in a soft glow, yet her heart raced with unease.
"Mom, Dad, there's something important I need to share," she started, her voice barely rising above the hush of the room.
Her mother leaned in, intrigue flickering in her eyes. "What is it this time?" she inquired, concern knitting her brow.
Taking a steadying breath, Zainab filled her lungs with courage. "It's about my love interest," she confessed, the words spilling forth like a dam breaking.
Her father's demeanor shifted, seriousness clouding his features. "And your studies?" he pressed, worry lacing his voice.
Zainab's fingers curled into tight fists. "I assure you, my education will not falter, Dad. I promise you that."
Her mother’s voice quivered with anxiety. "This was the reason you were so adamant the other day?" she asked, her gaze searching for answers.
"Not just because of this. But I didn't want to be stuck in a loveless marriage," Zainab stated, her tone unwavering.
An oppressive silence enveloped the room.
Her father's expression darkened, disapproval etched deeply into his features.
"How long has this been happening?" her mother questioned, her voice barely above a whisper.
Zainab hesitated, the weight of the moment heavy upon her. "A few months," she finally admitted.
Her father’s fist struck the armrest with a thud. "We trusted you in sending you alone to the college. What were you thinking?"
Zainab stood her ground, determination igniting within her. "Trust me dad, I wanted what's best for you and our family but can't you for ones think about what I want?"
Her mother interjected, her voice tinged with urgency. "What will others think? Shame on you Zainab."
Zainab maintained her composure. "If I thought about what the society had to say then I'm nothing but a puppet attached to a thousand trings. I need control over my life. I didn't commit anything huge. For ones I acted for myself."
Her parents exchanged anxious glances, the tension palpable.
"We will discuss this later," her father declared, a finality in his tone.
Zainab nodded, a wave of relief washing over her.
The fire had begun.
As she exited the room, a whirlwind of emotions surged within her. Fear and uncertainty clashed with a fierce determination and love.
Though her parents' reactions were anticipated, the sting of their disapproval lingered painfully.
In the quietness of her room, Zainab's thoughts turned to him. His comforting smile and steadfast support bolstered her resolve.
