Chapter 11:The Fractured Reality
Sanjana’s frantic sobs filled the room as Dev’s face contorted with agony. His heart rate, once steady, now raced erratically, a clear sign of the gravity of his injuries. The room was drenched in an eerie silence, broken only by Dev’s labored breathing and the sound of his heartbeat growing fainter.
“Dev, please,” Sanjana pleaded, her voice a desperate, trembling whisper as she looked down at him. Her hands, now stained with his blood, clutched his shoulder. “Stay with me. I didn’t mean for this to happen.”
Dev’s eyes, glazed with pain, flickered open briefly. “Sonakshi… it hurts…” His voice was strained, barely a whisper. Each word seemed to take an immense effort, and the blood pooling beneath him painted a stark contrast against the stark white of the bed linens.
Sanjana’s heart pounded in her chest as she frantically searched the room for something—anything—that could help. Her hands, slick with sweat and blood, trembled uncontrollably. “I need to get help. I’ll get help, Dev. Just hold on!”
Her words were desperate, and she rushed to grab her phone from the nightstand. Her fingers fumbled as she dialed emergency services, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps. “Please, please, hurry,” she said into the phone. “My… my boss is… he’s been hurt badly.”
As she hung up and tried to keep her composure, Dev’s groans grew more frequent, each one a harsh reminder of his suffering. He tried to lift his head, his eyes meeting hers with a look of profound hurt and betrayal. “Why, Sanjana? Why did it have to come to this?”
Tears streamed down her face as she shook her head, unable to find the words to answer him. “I—I don’t know. I was afraid and angry, and I just… I lost control. Please, Dev, forgive me. I’m so sorry.”
Dev’s breathing grew more ragged, each inhalation a struggle as his condition worsened. His body shivered involuntarily, and he looked at her with a pained expression. “It’s… too late for that… now.”
Sanjana’s world seemed to collapse around her as she desperately tried to keep him conscious. She pressed her hand against his wound, trying to stem the bleeding as best as she could. Her mind raced, filled with regret and helplessness. The weight of her actions bore down on her, an unbearable burden she knew she would have to face regardless of what happened next.
In the distance, she could hear the faint sound of sirens approaching, a sliver of hope amidst the crushing despair. She clung to that hope, trying to focus on the fact that help was on its way. “Please, Dev, just hold on a little longer. Help is coming. I won’t leave you.”
Dev’s eyes fluttered shut once more, and his grip on her hand slackened. The sirens grew louder, their wail a distant but promising sign. Sanjana’s sobs continued, mingling with the relentless rhythm of the approaching emergency vehicles.
As the paramedics burst through the door, the scene was one of urgent chaos, and Sanjana stepped back, her heart heavy with the weight of her actions and the uncertain future that lay ahead.
