Chapter 2: The Unexpected Gesture
The night after their first meeting, Meera replayed the evening in her mind. The laughter, the fleeting moments of connection, and Arjun’s curious words—it all felt surreal. She had assumed their interaction would end at polite conversation, yet his words had lingered, heavy with meaning.
The next morning, as she stepped into her clinic, a small package awaited her at the reception desk.
“For Dr. Meera Joshi,” the receptionist said, handing her the neatly wrapped box.
Confused, Meera accepted it and carefully peeled back the gold paper. Inside was a vinyl record—a rare edition of one of her favorite singers, Lata Mangeshkar. Attached was a note:
“You have great taste in music. Maybe you’ll let me hear you sing someday? – Arjun”
Her heart skipped a beat. How had he known this about her? She had only mentioned her love for music in passing, during their brief conversation.
Her colleague, Dr. Sharma, glanced over with a smirk. “Secret admirer?”
Meera flushed. “It’s... just a gift.”
But as she tucked the record into her bag, she couldn’t stop the small smile from forming. It was a thoughtful gesture, and it intrigued her more than she cared to admit.
By evening, her phone buzzed with an unfamiliar number. She hesitated before answering.
“Hello?”
“It’s Arjun,” came the smooth, unmistakable voice. “I hope you got the package?”
Meera bit her lip, trying to keep her tone steady. “I did. Thank you. That was... unexpected.”
“I thought it might be a good icebreaker,” he said casually. “Besides, I was curious about your favorite songs.”
“Well, you’ve already guessed one,” she replied, leaning against her desk.
“Then maybe you can tell me the others over dinner,” he said. His tone was light, but there was an undercurrent of sincerity that caught her off guard.
“Dinner?” she repeated, unsure if she had heard correctly.
“Just the two of us,” he clarified. “Unless you’re busy saving lives that night.”
She laughed softly despite herself. “I’ll have to check my schedule.”
“Fair enough,” Arjun replied. “But let me know soon. I don’t take rejection well.”
The line went silent, leaving Meera staring at her phone, her thoughts swirling.
