My breathing was shallow and quick, I was trying to be a quiet as possible, but it was more than a little difficult considering I was crawling through a literal vent. I was in the hallway that led up to the cells, there was a few more turns and then I would be safely inside the dungeon. Safely may not be the word to use though.
The vents were so small I couldn't even turn around in them, which meant I couldn't make any mistakes and luckily for me so far, I haven't. Now I was at a standstill, I couldn't go any further with out Abbi giving me the signal. Abbi was taking her sweet ass time, she said she wanted to make an entrance it was a guaranteed was to make sure you had the attention of whoever was in the room.
A swift 'click, click, click' of heels told me Abbi was quickly approaching, I lifted myself up from my laying position into a slightly hunched crawling one.
She was right underneath me now, I took in a deep breath and prepared myself for the signal she would be giving me.
"Now watch me work," Abbi whispers to herself, and if I didn't have my hyper-listening gear on, I never would have heard her. That was the signal, that was also her confidence boost she needed to get through this.
I started crawling forward keeping up with her through the sounds of her heels clicking against the brick walkway. There was only ever two people guarding the cells this late at night, one on either side. Alex was conveniently on the side I needed to get to. Luckey me.
"Hey Abbi, what brings you down here so late?" Alex asks starting the conversation after a heavy sigh, my guess from looking at Abbi in the first place. She tended to have that affect of men in general, especially when she really put herself together.
"Oh, nothing much, you know I'm leaving again tomorrow?" She says in her best 'I want you' voice. I had to roll my eyes at her display, surely, she was laying it on too thick. Anyone could see right through her display.
"Really?" he asks and his voice cracks just the faintest bit.
Or maybe not.
"Yes, and I was just thinking that if you were free tonight, perhaps we could get together?" Abbi asks as she lightly brushes up against his arm. I could see her faintly through of the air conditioning vents, I was glad I had my hair up otherwise it would've been blowing all around me.
"So, are you?"
"Am I what?" Alex asks dumbly, clearly having focused on something else rather than Abbi's words. Men are so easy to fool, all it takes is a few light touches and some breathy words and they are practically putty in your hands.
Abbi gets a bit closer to him and grabs ahold of his bullet proof vest and drags him down for a kiss. And its not just some quick peck on the lips, its long and filled with heat and passion or at least it looks that way to me. It must feel that way too because Alex seems to lean in and grab ahold of Abbi, somehow bringing her even closer to himself.
With another roll of my eyes I quicky crawl, more of a shuffle, towards the cell I was looking for. Both conveniently and unconventionally her cell was in the very back row, she was in a cage all by herself and yes- I would call it a cage. My knees and elbows are beginning to hurt, after all I've just been crawling around for the last hour almost and was grateful I would be out in just a moment's time.
Once I was sure I was out of sight from Alex and Abby and there not so little make out session I dropped down from the vents, landing silently just in front of my intended target. With how late it was I almost expected her to be asleep but wasn't at all surprised to find her hiding in the back of her cell, eyes wide and glassy as she stared carefully and cautiously at the world around her.
"Hey, I remember you," Dakota gasps out in surprise, speaking much louder than I would have thought. She didn't move from where she was sitting, not even changing her posture. Clearly this wasn't the first time she's been in this situation.
"Shh! Keep your voice down or you'll get us both killed." I quickly rush out not wanting to risk the attention of Alex though I seriously doubt he's thinking of anything else but Abbi right this very second. Getting back to my main goal, I pull out several small tools, each one meant to work together to flawlessly open a lock. At least if you're properly trained in how too.
"What are you doing?" She whispers now, I look up at her and she stumbles back. I must have had my assassin's face on, I roll my eyes not wanting to scare her but not really having the time to console her.
"Saving your life." I explain in between my looking over my shoulder and picking the lock. These were state of the art, and no one should be able to break them- but I want just anyone, and a satisfying click assails my ears not a minute later.
I quickly open the cell and grab a hold of Dakotas arm before she reels back into her corner. I couldn't tell before due to the darkness, but she was trembling quite a bit. She was attempting to be brave and fearless in the eyes of her captors.
Poor girl, she really did have a shitty life.
Without warning I immediately began a brisk jog towards the furthest point of the Dungeon, knowing that back there we would be out of sight of any cameras or any other possible guards. Not they would be a challenge for someone of my training and status. But there was also a stairwell that led down to the morgue, and the nearest exit.
"Wait where are we going?" Dakota hurriedly asks, while thankfully following me.
"Were leaving," I replied offhanded.
That seemed to placate her for the time being and I was able to concentrate for just a moment. Once I saw the door leading to the stairwell and knew we were in the clear, I flung open the door not necessarily caring about the sound knowing that no one was around. No one ever went down to the more unless they worked there or had no choice.
Rumors had it that the morgue was haunted. That rumor had cycled and spread over the last decade no doubt until now no one dared to venture down here very convenient for us.
As we slowly headed down the stairs being careful not to trip, I finally let go of Dakota's wrist trusting that she was willing to follow me the rest of the way. Even if she didn't, I doubt she'd tell me. But I was far too busy worrying about her and the slight trembling to notice the sound in the background that was until Dakota pointed it out.
"What was that noise? Look there it is again." And maybe
"Shh!" I quickly tried to shush her trying to figure out what the sound could be, I needed to know if I had to prepare for a possible attack or think of a quick escape route for us, a Plan B if you would.
"But what's that sound?" Dakota asks and I notice that her voice is starting to shake. I must be making her nervous, good. As long as she's nervous that means that shell be careful, and even though she's not nearly as trained as I am, if she's careful we should manage to live through this.
"Shh!"
"Stop shushing me!" She tells me just below a yell.
"No, I'm trying to figure out what that sound is, and I can't unless you stop talking."
After a moment of silence, I can finally place what the sound was. It was muffled because we were down so low, it was the alarm. It goes off if there's an intruder or if someone's escaping, it basically seals off the entire building.
It also wakes up every single person within the building and puts them on high alert. We just woke up about 100 assassins who will be looking for the one person who just escaped their cell. Also known as the person standing extremely close to me.
"Shit." I curse before I can stop myself.
"What, what's wrong?" Dakota asks pressing herself closer to me and quickly whipping her head back and forth looking for any sign of danger.
"I figured out what that noise is," I pause as I focus on dragging her through the different corridors down here.
"And?" She asks clearly impatient and uncomfortable with her lack of information on what's going on.
"Its an alarm,"
"I take it that's not a good thing?" She leads, I'm guessing she wants me to fill her in a bit more, and unfortunately for her we don't have the time for a full rundown of the shitshow that's about to unfold.
"Well, not for us." I reply staring back at her. "Now are you done with the Spanish Inquisition?" My last bit is more of a challenge, practically daring her to ask one more question.
She wordlessly nods her head; I give her one of my rare smiles for half a second before I turn and focus back on the walkways.
There were a lot less lights down here for some reason, though I don't know why it's not like the dead can complain about the brightness of it. If anything, it just further pissing me off now I have to navigate nearly in the dark, we had to move a little bit slower than I had originally intended to. Every corner I had to double check to make sure no one is about to pop out into a sneak attack and kill both of us.
I doubt they'd kill her maybe just me...
check behind the next corner and immediately reel back I slammed my arm across Dakota's chest making her press into the wall next to me. A quick glance over to her shows she's terrified of the world around her, even now her trembling more noticeable now than ever.
I lift my hands slowly and place one single finger over my mouth telling her to be quiet, then I make a move to slowly round the corner.
"Good evening, William," I greet as casually as I possibly can. He seemed surprised to see me startled almost, he was dressed similarly to me though I was packing more gear than he was, in more ways than one.
"Hello eve, what are you doing down here?" He questions and the blank stare tells me he's merely playing pretend, he knows more than he's letting on. But that's OK because two us can play this game, and unfortunately for him I'm a sore loser.
"Looking for the intruder," I say simply. "Isn't that what you're doing as well?"
"The message said it was someone escaping
"Really? Maybe we got two different messages after all I do have a higher clearance than you do." I add salt to the wound making sure to really piss him off.
Men were so easy to manipulate. A little sweet words there a soft caress there and they were putting their hands, but just as well their egos were delicate little things, as fragile as eggshells. All it took was a single strike and it would shatter and out would come pouring all their emotions, and their most popular one rage and anger. William may be a good trainer, but he had nothing on me when it came to killing.
and there was simply no way I could let him walk away right now, not that he would willingly leave by himself. I could tell that I had already made him mad earlier today by my rejection this would no doubt further set him over the edge, and it would just be too easy to reduce him to nothing.
"Oh my dear sweet Eve, you clearly are just a naïve little girl. Playing. Pretend." William spat back at me, I get it now, he was looking for a reaction as well.
It didn't take him more than a second to draw his blade, a short dull dagger. It took everything in me not to roll my eyes or to move even the slightest bit to show that he wasn't as terrifying as he wanted me to believe. I had no problem playing the defenseless little girl after all it did work to my advantage one swift move.
"You humiliated me earlier and now you have the audacity to say that you have higher ranking than I do?" He choked out a laugh clearly trying to maintain his moral high ground.
"Just the honest truth."
"Such a shame eve they found her body all mangled up could hardly identify it without your dog tag." Ah yes, the dog tags the small tattoo right on the back of my neck, letting everyone know who I was.
I said nothing more, only raised my eyebrows ever so slightly, a silent challenge daring him to move daring him to do as he says. That was all the prompt he needed before he was running at me blade ready, I anchored my feet to the ground and prepared for impact with one swift move he was on top of me the knife cutting into my neck.
I could feel a little drops of blood, and I grinned up at him. He paused hesitated for a moment even and that was just the momentum I needed I grabbed hold of his wrist and trusted him using my momentum I flipped us both to where I was on top, and he was on the bottom I threw the dagger not needing the weapon any longer. I wailed on top of him punch after punch after punch, he was going to get the beating of a lifetime before I was done with him he was going to know that girl beat the shit out of him and then killed him. With one final punch I broke his nose and severed his air passageways, shoving his nose deeper into his skull. Within a few minutes he would suffocate. And I would be the very last thing he ever saw.
I lifted myself from him and heard heavy breathing right off the corner I turned my head my eyes met with Dakotas. They were wide and fearful, ah yes this must have reminded her of the first time I met her.
"Are you OK?" she asked, surprising me.
I wordlessly nodded back to her, not having the strength to use any actual words. I motioned for her to follow we were nearly at the exit. Just a few more feet and we would be out of this gut-wrenching nightmare.
