Chapter Eight

"Run. I said, run!" A voice snapped from afar, immediately causing little paws to create the 'pitter patter' sound that the rain usually brought as they sprinted across the uneven terrain. Red was all they could see, but it wasn't of anger. No. It was fear and fire. There were red flames licking at their paws as they ran, each scoring burn turning the weak pups into fire machines. But not one little collie pup. He just sat in the back near the starting line, shying away from any fire that tried to near him. A roar of flames and fury was heard in the distance before Discipline appeared in front of the pup. "I swear, Stun, it was like you were meant to be a water spirit instead. Get up and run like all the others!" Discipline snapped, fire pouring off of the pitbull.

Stun shook his head, cautiously dipping one of his paws into the flames and pulling it out to reveal that flames had started to replace his paw, abruptly caught off. Though the damage was permanent. The tip on his paw was now made of flames instead of flesh and fur. Then he turned back to his teacher and cried, "See what happens if I touch it? I don't want to be a fire monster like you!"

Discipline erupted into a flaming ball of light, but soon he was back to normal. "Watch your tongue, pup," he growled, taking one of his paws and hitting the pup with it, causing the collie to fall into the fire.

Gasping, Lemon practically catapulted into a sitting position, looking around as if he might be in that place. To his relief, he was safe in the forest with the group that hadn't ditched everyone. What was that!? His mind was screaming at Soothe for an answer for the nightmare he must've just had, hoping she would say something like 'nothing, you're going crazy' like she usually did when he told her about his dreams.

I- It was a dream... n-nothing more, But Soothe's voice and stutter made him wonder if what she was saying was a lie. Maybe he should worry about what he saw, especially if it worried a spirit.

"Everything okay, Lemon? You look like you just saw a dead body!" Nutmeg chuckled, though was generally concerned. She still seemed to have some blood on her snout from yesterday's hunt.

"I'm fine. There's no need to worry," Lemon responded with a chuckle, shaking his head and getting up. They had already caught something yesterday, so they didn't have to do any hunting for a day or two. Most of the group didn't need food for a week, but Ol' Mackerel was, well, old, so they hunted more for him. What would they do today?

Leave the other dogs to play like they love to do. I'll take you to a river and teach you the ways of water, maybe even how to control it, Soothe promised, as if she were trying to train him for some danger as quickly as possible. It was a tempting offer and one he feared to do at the same time.

"I'm going to go get a drink, bye!" Lemon said to Nutmeg as cheerfully as he could to mask his concern about their safety. Should they have ever left the pound? Quietly, he left their safe place by the waterfall and crossed the river, not glancing back at the rapids as he landed on the lush ground that covered the other side. Alright, lead the way, He told Soothe, and suddenly a drop of water flew past him and into the water, catching the light and almost blinding the golden retriever. Oh, she had decided to send him a guide instead of actually talking to him. Was she mad? It didn't matter anyway, he had to follow the drop of water that was already whisking away. Taking a deep breath like he was about to plunge into a cold lake, he took off through the forest to follow his guide.

Lemon must've ran for half an hour, because once they actually reached a suitable river, he was panting and it felt like his chest would explode. When he looked around though, he realized this place must be sacred to Soothe. Cattails lined the bank of the river, a little sand and cobble path leading him to it. Lush, green grass decorated the sloped ground, light blue lilies scattering the base of trees while vines shot up the log. Little animals danced around the area; water catching the light of the sun and reflecting it to the tall trees. It was breathtaking, and he was sure he couldn't even process the true beauty.

Looking towards the river again, he noticed that the water was starting to form a shape, water droplets shooting up and joining the figure that was forming. Paws, torso, and the head were all made in messed up shapes, somehow keeping all the water in. A large gust of wind flew by, the light following in seconds. After he had regained his sense of sight, he could see the form of Soothe had been what the shape had meant to be. Now, she stood there in full detail, so much that he could see her individual pieces of fur. This was their first time meeting in person.

"Lemon, how nice to truly meet you," the spirit said calmly, though her voice seemed to fill up the whole area. Slowly, Soothe left the confines of the river, still keeping her shape and water she had taken from it though. Now that there was less water in the river, he could see all the rocks that lay under it, guiding the water along its journey. The stones were a shade of grey, white, or brown, and they were quite mesmerizing when the water glistened about them.

"Nice to meet you too, S-Soothe." It was a bit weird for him to talk to the spirit face to face while also not in a dream, just proving to him this whole thing was real and not something he made up.

"Now, shall we train?" Soothe asked calmly, gesturing to the river with her paw.
