Chapter 2: A lesson in history

Chapter 2: A lesson in history

I woke the next morning still feeling the after math of the bite and the sex, my legs ached, my head was on fire which I was pretty sure that meant I had a temperature and my neck still burned. I glanced at the clock on the bedside table. I saw it was 9:13am, Harley never lets me sleep in that long, I glanced over at the baby monitor and realised that he hadn’t even cried all night. Or maybe he did and I was in just a too deep a sleep to realise, Oh my god, I am a terrible mother.

I jumped out of bed quickly throwing on my black jeans and a red top with a colourful print and pulling my hair into a high ponytail, catching myself in the mirror before I left the room I noticed the red mark on my neck that was even worse than last time, which means it was much deeper than last time – I need to put a bandage or something to cover that up.

Pulling away from the mirror and nearly running down the hallway to my son’s room. I threw open the door to see his bed empty, looking around the room I saw the cream walls with the blue feature wall, the mess of toys scattered on the floor covering nearly every inch of carpet; no sign of Harley.

Taking a deep breath I continued down the hallway and down the stairs skipping a few steps as I went, I went to check the lounge room. I turned the corner to the room with its large black leather couch, fire place, television and numerous bookshelves and leaned against the door frame to watch the scene play out in front of me.

Carter was on the floor leaning against the black leather couch, holding Harley in his lap, he had one arm around Harley’s waist while the other pushed a toy car in front of him. Harley took the car and started playing with it for about ten seconds before he went looking for his dinosaurs again. Carter tried once again to get him to go for the car but Harley refused.

I should have known he would try and push his love of cars onto our son sooner or later after all he was the one who insisted on naming him after a motorcycle. It was moments like this when I saw just how much Carter loved him that made everything else about him just tolerable.

A smile made its way onto my face as I continued to watch the two together. I was a little lost in thought when I heard Harley’s voice ring out. “Mummy!” he called. I looked over to see Carter’s eyes guarded and cautious as if waiting for a fight, but I decided to let him off this morning; I made eye contact keeping my gaze soft and eyes wide. His lips curled upward in to another smirk when he realised I wouldn’t fight him, he stood up in one swift motion still holding Harley by the waist. He started to walk over to me when Harley started kicking and screaming.

“Daddy you forgot Rex!” he yelled almost bursting an ear drum making Carter flinch. Rolling his eyes he moved back and picked up Harley’s favourite dinosaur, Rex. With Harley clutching Rex like it was his life line Carter walked back towards me and then passed me to walk into the kitchen with me following behind me. He placed Harley down in a chair while Tory came out with breakfast.

“Carter, Cory needs a word as soon as possible, his waiting in the study” she told him before smiling at me and placing breakfast on the table. Tory was the only one apart from his cousins who used his name, although I’m pretty sure that’s because he thinks of her as the closest thing to a mother he has since like me both his parents died when he was younger.

He nodded at her before turning to me “be ready in fifteen minutes” he said before he left the room leaving me stunned and confused. Be ready for what?

I sat down and ate the food Tory had given me; egg on toast, the smell made my stomach rumble as it hit my senses. Eating breakfast was always a struggle mainly because I had to make shore that Harley didn’t start throwing his breakfast everywhere which was a nasty habit I refuse to take credit for. Once he was finished I only had a few minutes left before I had to be ready for whatever it is I had to be ready for.

I placed Harley on the floor and let him run around the house while I made my way into the kitchen. Opening the bottom corner cupboard I started rummaging in there for my pill. Carter wouldn’t let me take any contraception and considering how I wasn’t a big fan of needles and the fact that the pack doctor wouldn’t give me the shot even if I wanted to, the pill was my only option; I had talked Tory into going behind his back and getting them for me which took more than some sweet talking and a box of chocolates, we hid them here mainly because no one goes rummaging in the cupboards and I had never seen Carter in here in the three years I’ve been here; he probably doesn’t even know where the cupboard for the glasses is.

I had almost climbed into the cupboard with my butt high in the air searching for the packet, where is it?

“Quite a view” Carter’s voice came from behind me making me jump. I hit my head on the top of the cupboard before climbing out and turning around slowly. He was leaning against the island bench and looking slightly amused by my antics. “Looking for something?”

“No” I lied

“Are you sure, I didn’t know you climbed into cupboards for fun” He said still amused.

“Well I do, so get used to it” I lied

“Well I just thought you’d be looking for these” He said as he reached in to his back pocket and pulled out the packet of pills, he twirled them in his fingers as he stared at me watching my reaction.

“Oh umm there not mine” I lied again.

“So why were you looking for them?” He questioned narrowing his eyes at me.

“I wasn’t, I told you I climb into cupboards for fun” and again another lie. I really am a compulsive liar.

“Is lying genetic?” he asked in all seriousness crossing his arms over his chest.

“You’ll have to ask Harley” I said mirroring his stance and narrowing my eyes at him. Even if it was genetic, Harley doesn’t lie, and on the rare occasion he does he cracks moments later confessing to his crimes.

He turned the packet in his hands once again for a while before saying “Looks like you missed yesterday and the day before, to bad” He said in a clam and serious voice, Shit! He threw the packet on the island bench in front of me before walking out. “And every other day from now on!” he yelled over his shoulder.

I grabbed the packet and opened it before seeing it empty of all pills. I groaned before throwing back on the bench and trailing after him. He was waiting by the front door a cocky look on his face; I walked passed him and grabbed my black jack off of the coat rack and walked over to lounge room where Cory sat with Harley. I kissed Harley on the forehead before walking back over to Carter.

“What? do I get a goodbye kiss Melly mouse?” Cory called after me. I smiled at the nick name; the twins have been calling me Melly mouse ever since the found out my name was Melody.

“Nope” I said popping the p and walking out the front door.

“Cory, watch him, I mean it!” Carter yelled at his cousin before following me out the door and closing it behind him.

I rolled my eyes and walked down the stairs towards the red mustang with the white racing strip down the middle that was waiting in the drive way. I climbed in to the passenger side and waited patiently for Carter. He climbed in and started to drive off without a word.

“So… where are we going?” I asked leaning back in my chair and lifting my feet to sit on the dash.

“You’ll see” He said glancing at me and pulling my feet down off the dash.

I exhaled loudly “So, you’re not going to tell me?” I asked just to clarify.

“No” was all I got.

“Why not?” I questioned.

“Stop asking questions” He was getting impatient but I was having too much fun annoying him.

“No”

He glared at me for a moment before turning his attention back to the road and started to ignore me.

“Why don’t you want me to know?”

He ignored me still. So I decided to question a different subject.

“Where did you put the pills?”

He glared at me again “I flushed them down the toilet” asshole!

“Why?”

“I’m beginning to think asking question and lying are your most annoying traits”

“You’re only just finding all of this out now?”

He kept quiet and focussed on the road. I was fed up with all of the secrets. And he wonders why I ask so many questions, why did he even bring me in the first place if he was going to be a mute?

“Fine be an ass” I said putting my feet back on the dash. Ha take that! He turned his attention to me before rolling his eyes and staring back at the road.

We drove for another fifteen minutes with nothing but silence. The car finally came to a stop in front of a small old house; he pulled the hand break and climbed out before starting the journey up the drive way not even bothering to wait for me. Such as gentlemen. I stumbled out of the car almost tripping on the curb and scrambled after him. We approach the little white town house with a red door, orange pointed roof and a small garden that kept an assortment of colourful flowers, Carter knocked on the door.

The door opened to reveal a red headed women whose hair had obviously been died to keep its colour, she had reading glassed on the bridge of her nose that hide big grey eyes and wrinkles. There was a strong sweet smell that signified her overuse of perfume, she moved aside bowing her head down and allowed Carter and me to walk into the house.

It was very quaint and everything had a vintage style to it, the room we were lead into was packed full of delicate and cute little ornaments that had been collected from the years, all covered by a thin layer of dust. I passed a photo of two young red headed girls, one with grey eyes and one with brown. I looked at it further and saw they stood with what I would assume to be their parents; the man had dirty blond hair and bright grey eyes while the women resembled the girls with red hair and brown eyes. Seeing this photo and how much the younger girl resembled the older women in front of me I knew she was a pack elder. But why would he bring me here?

By the time I turned back to face Carter and the old lady they were both seated at a small round table with a white laced table cloth. I shook my head clearing myself of my thoughts and took a seat across from the old women and next to Carter. She looked me up and down before stopping at my neck and narrowing her eyes on my bite, its red mark still stung a little.

“Hi I’m Jan the packs elder” she smiled widely at me confirming my suspicions before turning her attention to Carter.

“Just because the bite was hard doesn’t make it any more likely to stick and only makes it hurt more” she said to Carter. Ha I told you jackass!

“Well what will make it stick?” He questioned through clenched teeth.

She smiled at us before turning to me. “First it may help to you to know a little bit about what you are” she said to me. What I am? What the hell kind of pot has she been smoking? And where can I get some?

“You’re what we call an omitir it is a Spanish word that simply means Skip. It is a werewolf who cannot change, one with ultimate control over the gene. Only a rare few of your kind has made the transformation, it would be ten times more painful than any normal wolf and may only be activated at near death as a survival act.” Oh good to know; note to self, avoid near death experiences.

“The legend goes that when the kings of the seven wolf packs were on the brink of war fighting over who would be named the alpha amongst alphas they sought the help of a witch to help them decide. The witch in return created a curse that selected one she-wolf every few hundred years that would be born without the ability to shift. She would fall under no compulsion and would follow no order, and upon her eighteenth birthday she would find a mate with the king of all alphas.” I looked over at Carter to see him in deep thought taking everything in even though this was no doubt not the first time he had heard this.

“Usually there would be a contest for her but you didn’t have much competition, did you Carter?” She directed her question at Carter.

“A few but they were easily dealt with, now no one dares to challenge me” Carter answered with a slight sound of pride in his voice.

“The bite takes time to be accepted, it is to make sure that you can protect her even after the initial bite. It will be accepted soon, especially since she has already had a pup.” Oh fantastic, don’t encourage him he’s already taken my pills.

“So it just takes a while and there’s nothing he can do to speed it up, ok” I clarified earning a smirk from Carter. Why is he smirking?

“Well if you have more pups then it will speed up the process” She admitted.

Shit! I had to open my big mouth didn’t I. “I need a drink” I muttered but that didn’t make any difference with their super human hearing.

“Down the hall and to the right, glasses are in the top left cupboard.” She told me smiling greatly at me.

I got up from my chair ignoring their eyes following me out, I followed her instructions entering a kitchen with dark timbered cupboards and peach coloured bench tops and grabbed out a glass before filling it up with water from the tap. That explained a lot of things, like why he threw out all of my pills for one. I took the glass and headed back to the small room, hearing their voices I stopped and pressed my ear against the wall to hear their conversation.

“It’s part of her nature to disobey you, you knew that from the beginning Carter.” She said to him.

“I know that Jan but one of these days she’s going to get hurt all because she goes out of her way just to piss me off” He sounded mad. Oh well.

“She is many things Carter but she is not stupid and she wouldn’t put that boy in any danger or cause him harm by leaving him.” Well I’m glad someone doesn’t think I’m recluse.

“Well not intentionally” Where’s he going with this?

“What do you mean?” good question.

“There’s movement up north” What the hell does that mean?

“So tell her, she will understand and be shore to keep close to her guards”

“That’s it? That’s your advice?” His voice was full of anger.

“Yes, maybe take her up to the mountains.” The mountains? What’s up there?

“Oh no, no way… What’s taking her so long?” I heard the movement of the chair and bolted for the kitchen. I sat down on the chair and bought the water to my lips pretending to gaze aimlessly out of the window.

“Are you ready to go?” Carter asked as he walked over to me.

I nodded my head and got up from my seat. We walked back to the door, standing on the porch out front we said thankyou and goodbye to Jan before making our way back to the car. Glancing back at the small house I thought about that picture again, she must be really lonely living here all by herself, the colourful flowers caught my attention once again as I climbed in the car, maybe I should take up gardening. Carter got in the car and started it up again; he kept his eyes on the road staring straight ahead as he drove.
