Chapter 18: Alpha of the Blood
"How are you feeling?" Dean asked as he walked into the room. He seemed very cool and calm as he hung back, slightly leaning against the door frame.
How was I feeling? Well since I was locked in this room with an endless stack of dvd's and more food then I could possibly eat. Do they think I was a hippo or something? How much do they think I could possibly eat? "Bored" I answered. Very bored.
"I figured, how would you like to join me for dinner?" he gave me a charming smile and a wink.
"Do I have to eat?" I whinned.
He chuckled a little and shook his head slightly. "Only if you want to, but trust me when I say my roast chicken is to die for."
I wiggled my nose a little and jumped up, being a little careful with how fast I got up. Walking over to the bathroom I pulled my hair up into a messy bun and threw on a lime green dress of thin, light material that was short in the front and long in the back.
We walked down stairs, my arm looped in his. Getting down to the foyer there was a table with a light linnion cloth over the top, two chairs either side The table was alight with a range of candles in the middle while the room had lanterns around it that reflected off the lake only a few metres from where the table was seated.
We sat down on the chairs and the food was bought out almost immediantly.
"So what exactly did you do all day in that big house?" Dean pressed again. I was almost certain I had answered this question before. I shook my head a little and tossed the food around my plate before bringing my food up to my mouth.
"I told you." I said beofre taking my first bite and slowly chewing the moist chicken.
"Did you?"
I'm pretty sure. I frwoned and narrowed my eyes at him, showing my pure displeasure.
"What about friends? I mean you had to have thoes right?" The images of the ones I called my friends came flooding back to my mind.
I shook my head. "I kind of pushed them away." I said feeling a slight pain as I siad the words.
"Why?"
"I was mad. They had taken me to that party knowing full well what was going to happen, it's like they offered me up like a sacrufical lamb." It hurt me, it hurt to have them betray me like that.
"And your family?"
"I only had my pop. He didnt even come with me that day. I was the only family he had left and he just..." I trailed off, feeling myself chock up.
"Well in their defense, non of them could have done anything anyways." He told me.
"What?" I scrunched up my face and stared at him.
"They were bound to do what Carter said. Not tell you and bring you to the slaughter house - as you put it. Your grandfather proabaly stayed home because he knew he wouldnt be able to just stand by and watch." Dean rationalised. I had been told this many times, from the twins, from Carter himself and even my friends when ever they would call and leave me a message. I had blocked them out and eventually they all gave up calling me and trying.
"I screamed and begged for help and no one even spared me a look." it hurt to revist the memories. I had spent so long trying to burry them but just as I think I've been successful soemone brings it up again.
"If they did, it would have been seen as a challenge. They'd be dead before they even got their hands on you and it would have only pissed Carter off even more."
"Do you know him or something?" I tried to change the topic.
"I've meet him. Mainly when he was taking over the Pack, but Alpha's are usualy very similar. Short fuse, anger management issues and very protective over what's their's, anyother kind of Alpha has inherited the title and unless they are great at manipulating people their not Alpha's for long." he explained and took a large bite of his chicken.
"You dont seem like a tipical Alpha." I stated thinking about what he said.
"Thank you." He paused for a moment and his face dropped looking slightly confused. "I think?"
I giggled a little which only made Dean chuckle. "So did you inherit your pack?" I said hoping to turn the tables on him. All he has done over the last couple of days is question me. I wanted to be the one questioning him for a change.
"No. I fought for my pack."
"Was it hard?"
"Very. I had something that most young wolves didn't which gave me an edge."
"What?"
"Brains." he smiled brightly at me. "I knew I had to be patient and strick when the timing was right. I started off at the bottom as the pack runt - they used to call me. Then slowly I worked my way up. Things were a little different then and espically with this pack, the rivers were higher and it acted more of an island so they kept to themselves." The way he talked made it seem like he did this over a hundred year ago.
"How old are you?" I puted and questioned.
"How old do you think I am?" he looked totaly amused by my question.
"Answer the question romeo." I snapped, narrowing my eyes at him.
"Late thirties."
To say I was suprised was an understament and the fact that my mouth was scrapping the floor wasnt helping.
He chuckled again. "Like the williams family, and your own family for that matter I have a long line of Alpha blood it helps with the aging side of things. We are what you call Alpha's of the blood, we live longer, fight smarter and are almost never beaten in battle." He said with so much pride in his voice.
"So how did you take over?"
"I slowly picked fights with the bottom of the pack and worked my way up." It seemed like a rational plan.
"And you took over when you were ready?"
"Well, a little prematurely if you ask me."
"Why? did you get a little impatient or something."
"I guess you could say that. There was a girl."
"Ah. I see." There was always a girl.
"Yes." I could hear the sadness in his voice and was mentally scolding myself for pressing on the matter. I wonder what happened to her? Can I even ask him that? No. I think that is a little too far.
"I'm sorry." I apologised.
"For what?"
"That I pressed you and that the memory brings you sadness."
"Never apologise. I have many good memories as well." he smiled softly at me, reasuring me.
I smiled back at him and finished off my meal, although I had almost already done that. It was so nice. So peacful that I almost forgot, forgot that I was meerily a prisoner under guard, forgot that my son was at home surrounded by strange wolves, his father and uncles who I had know idea if they were tucking him in at night, reading him his stories or anything really.
One of the men stepped in to the room and I half expected it to be Thomas but was serisly disappointed. This man had dirty blond hair tousled over his eyes and a strong build, he looked young although I had the feeling that he was older then his looks gave him credit for. He came to a stop at our table and whispered something in Dean's ear.
I watched silently trying to hone in my earing but with the execption of a few words like "...preperation...ready...the circle..." I had nothing. Dean's green eyes danced with a number of emotions, his eyes flickering from their usual bright aluring green, to a deep sea green before fading into an obsidan and then lastly black. It was strange, it had watch Carter's eyes change before but they were never as interesting as Dean's, it was like they changed colour interaly.
He nodded to the unnamed man and then turned his attention back to me. His eyes were back to the sea green colour but with an odd twinkle of his bright green. "Now where were we?" he smiled and leaned back in his seat.
"Is something wrong?" I questioned trying to get some answers.
"No not at all."
"Where's Thomas?" I wanted to know feeling a little off. I needed him to steady me for a moment.
"His left, the other Alpha's have called him back."
"Oh."
"Hows was your meal?"
"Fine. Just fine." I said a little unconvincingly. I dont know what was just fine, but it certainly wasnt this sistuation. "Can I ask you something?"
"Of course, anything."
"The fight ceromeny, how does it work?"
"Well we all stand around and who ever wishes to lay a claim to you will step forward, usualy all the young and very stupid wolves step up frist." he siad "the winner get's to stay in the circle and defend you."
"And the fight - "
"Is to the death or until one conceeds." She finished off my question, giving me my answer.
"Conceeds?" I had no idea that wolves had it in them to give out mercy.
"Yes, if you bow down and cower during a battle it means you conceed but your life then hangs in the hands of your opponent, they can either kill you or spare you and if you are spared, you owe them a debt." He explained it like it was law.
"Oh. Are you fighting?"
"Yes." That means he could die. I must admit Dean was growing on me, I was colse to even call him my friend but to think of him dying made me shutter.
"But why?"
"Many will fight because of an animalistic urge."
"But why are you?" I pressed him.
"Because of you. Your natural ablilty to defy intrigues even the best of us but your personality and beauty are qualities wroth fighting for." he smiled charmingly and I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes. I wasn't defiant. Was I? I defied Carter but that's because I was made at him for the better part of three years and I wanted to make his life a living hell.
My hand went to my stomach of it's own recored and I suddendly remembered what happens to the pups of another Alpha.
"Harley, the baby?" I questioned a sweep of panic rushing through me.
"Relax. Remember you need to stay calm."
"I am calm." I said through clenched teeth.
"Mel." He warned.
"What happens?"
"It depends. I believe he will send your son to his cusions in the Montains, he should be safe there."
"And the baby?"
"It depends on who wins. I myslef don't see the child as a threat and would let you keep it but not everyone has this opinion." he stated truthfully.
I nodded in unerstanding. "What if I want to go back to Carter?"
He seemed to flinch a little at my question. "You don't have a choice. It could be a result of the mark on your neck."
"But it never gave him any kind of power before." I stated truthfuly.
"Maybe not but the baby does. It is your natural instinct to protect it which is why you want to go back."
"But..." I started but was interupted.
"There's no bargaining with the rules."
"Can I fight for myslef?" I questioned thinking about it. If I could tap into my wolf and change then maybe I could do it. Granted they would all be bigger and stronger than me but they would all hesitate and that would be my opening.
"What?" He sounded shocked.
"Can I fight for myself?" I clarified.
He chuckled a little at my question. "Even if you could change - which you can't. No you can't fight for yourself."
I narrowed my eyes and pouted, crossing my arms over my chest and slouching back into my chair.

Fun Fact; when I picture Dean I picture Jensen Ackles (hence the photo) because well I was kind of watching supernatural when I thought of his character.
So theres the next chapter, I know there is a lot of information in there but I just started and it just seemed to flow so yeah. *shurgs*
I do have an entire story planned out for Dean and I am considering making this a story but I don't know yet.
Thanks so much for reading, please vote and comment.
