We left Whisper's room as it was. There was not even a moment we considered changing a thing. Once a week, Evangeline or myself would go in and strip the bed, washing the sheets and comforter.
We would also tidy up the room and dust, more so to just be around Whisper's things, than anything else.
.
Every day I would look into her room, expecting to see her, on her bed reading or at the computer playing games or listening to music. Spirit and Ghost would bounce in behind me, jumping up on the bed, running into the closet or scampering into the ensuite, looking for Whisper.
I expected at any moment to see them start their dance, but ...
there was no dance.
.
Eventually the two cats stopped going into her room and spent the days playing and sleeping together and nights at the foot of our bed.
.
We had already prepared another room, next to ours for a nursery. Bobby and I installed a door between the two rooms for easy access. Evangeline also set up a mini nursery in our bedroom.
As the months passed by we grew more excited. Each day gone meant another day closer to having our own little child in our home.
.
We did not speak of Whisper very much, because when we did, we both would start to cry. But that did not mean she ever left our minds or our hearts.
Especially for me. It had been like losing a daughter.
.
What made the whole transition so much easier, was Evangeline. With each day we grew closer to each other and I fell more in love with her.
I never thought it possible to so completely love another person.
Evangeline taught me how and I was sure that when our baby arrived, I would feel the same unconditional love.
She was my life, my best friend, my lover, my forever.
There was never a second that I did not thank my lucky stars for having met her.
.
The time passed quickly and before we knew it, we were near Evangeline's due date.
Our Doctor, Dr. Graham, assured us that everything was ok and the baby would come any day.
.
Because we were so far from the hospital in Corner Brook, we decided to rent a suite at the Glynmill Inn Hotel and stay there until the baby was born. The hotel was only a five minute drive from the hospital and no matter what time Evangeline was ready to give birth, it would be a quick drive.
.
Bobby agreed to look after the cats and we stayed in contact every day, especially Evangeline and Jessie, as Jessie was due about 6 weeks after Evangeline.
.
All was in place. All we had to do was wait.
.
It was July 2, 2012.
I was awakened by Evangeline at exactly 3:44 in the morning.
.
"We had better go," she informed me, a huge smile on her face.
.
Suddenly I was wide awake. "It's time?"
.
Tears were quickly filling her eyes, but the smile never left her face.
"It's time."
.

.
"Jenny, you did well."
.
Calvin and Alice Dove stood alongside their daughter in the white room. New voices now spoke to her.
.
"We sent you back to Earth to help a young man find his way and you did just that. We are all very proud of you."
.
"Thank you," Whisper said sadly.
.
"What is wrong child? This is a happy moment. You have earned your wings so to speak. You are now on the path to where you belong. An eternity of happiness, reunited with your mother and father."
.
"I don't belong here," Whisper cracked.
.
"What did you say child?"
.
Calvin looked at his daughter. "Jenny, mind your place girl."
.
"My name is Whisper," she reminded him.
.
"What did you say child?" the voices asked.
.
"I said my name is WHISPER."
She was now getting frustrated.
.
"Please ignore my daughter's outburst. She is but a child. I will see that she is dealt with," Calvin said sternly.
.
"Dealt with? How do you mean, dealt with?" Alice snapped at him.
.
Calvin looked at his wife.
.
She turned from him and walked away.
.
"Calvin, we do not deal with situations here. The child denies that her name is Jenny. Why is that?"
.
"My name is Whisper. That is the name that my Daddy gave me," Whisper said, before Calvin could answer.
.
Calvin grabbed his daughter's arm. "I am your father."
.
"YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER," Whisper yelled.
.
"RELEASE HER," the voices demanded.
.
Calvin let her go and stepped back.
.
"Speak child," the voices said softly.
.
"I don't want to be here."
.
"But are these not your parents?"
.
"They were," Whisper said, sadly, "but that was another life. Will is my Daddy. And Evangeline is my Mommy."
.
"But you are an angel. You have the opportunity to help others, just as you helped Will and Evangeline. And, as we speak, the woman, Evangeline is about to give birth to her very own child."
.
Whisper shook her head. "Alice told me once that I was not supposed to be here. That I was not suppose to die. That it was a mistake."
.
"Things were as they were supposed to be Jenny."
.
Whisper looked at Alice. "Then she lied to me. Would a real mother lie to her child about such a thing?"
.
Alice walked over to her daughter. "I did tell her that because I believed it to be true. She escaped a horrible death by fire only to be pushed into the Atlantic Ocean. It should never have been. She should have lived. Should have grown up and had children of her own. We took that from her."
.
"Alice," Calvin barked at her.
"Mind your place, woman."
.
"No Calvin. I wished her with me so badly that I fear I caused her death. She should not have died."
.
"Stop Alice. You're speaking nonsense."
.
She shook her head. "No. My last dying wish was to be with my little girl."
There was a long silence. Finally Alice knelt in front of Whisper. "I may have been the one that caused your death. I was granted my dying wish."
.
"Alice stopped talking nonsense. The storm killed Jenny," Calvin barked at her.
.
"Forgive me Whisper," Alice said, tears quickly filling her eyes.
Her mother faded in front of her eyes. Her father followed a few seconds later.
.
"Where did they go?" Whisper wondered.
.
"They have to find a new path to here."
.
"What about me?"
.
"We cannot send you back Jenny."
.
"But I don't belong here. You heard what they said."
.
"You are an angel now. You cannot go back."
.
"I don't want to be an angel. If it means I never see Will and Evangeline again then I don't want to be an angel. Make me a ghost and send me back."
.
"Child that is not the way it works."
.
"I WANT TO GO BACK."
.
"Silence child."
.
"I WILL NOT BE SILENT," Whisper yelled.
"I should be there, with my Mommy and Daddy. To see my new sister."
.
"We cannot send you back as a spirit."
.
"Send ME BACK."
.
"Your spirit must remain here."
.
"NOWWWWWWWWW."
Darkness surrounded Whisper. She could not see anything. She tried to speak but there was nothing.
Only silence.
She felt warm. Felt like she was floating in warmth.
She could hear her heart beating.
Far away she could hear what sounded like another heart beat.
She felt safe.
The silence and the warmth and the darkness began to overpower her.
She felt at peace.
She felt home.
She drifted off.
