Evangeline's car was still there, as I pulled into my garden.
I jumped out of the truck. She was not on the veranda. I looked around the garden.
I let out a deep sigh as I saw her, sitting on the steps of the gazebo, staring out across the ocean.
.
'Whisper, where are you?'
There was no answer.
'We re going to have a long talk, young lady.'
.
Evangeline got to her feet, when she saw me walking toward her.
.
"Are you ok?" I asked her, genuinely concerned.
I held out my arms to hug her, but she stopped me.
.
She just stared at me and passed me her camera.
"Look at the pictures I took the first time I was here."
.
"What?"
I was confused. I looked down at the viewer.
"It is a picture of the ocean."
.
"Keep looking," she demanded.
.
I scrolled through the pictures. There were more pictures of the ocean, the forest that surrounded my property and a couple of my house. I was confused. I shrugged my shoulders.
"What am I looking for?"
.
"Don't see anything unusual?" Evangeline barked, sarcastically.
.
"No, I don't."
I scrolled a couple more pictures, but still had no idea what she was talking about.
"What am I supposed to see, Eva?"
.
She snatched the camera from me and scrolled, herself. She stopped suddenly and passed the camera back to me.
"What about these, Will?"
.
I took the camera. The first picture was the one she had taken of me coming from my house. There I was, but next to me was a bright light, kind of in the image of a small child.
I took a deep breath. Slowly I scrolled through the pictures of me. Every picture had the same image next to me.
.
I shrugged.
"What am I supposed to see?"
I tried to act stupid. She wasn't buying it.
.
"Really, Will? You don't see that?," she snapped, pointing at the image.
.
"Must be a reflection of some sort," I said, innocently.
"It was sunny that morning and I do have a bald head."
I was trying to make light of the situation, but she was not amused.
.
She snatched the camera from me and laid it on the gazebo railing. She continued to stare at me as she lit a smoke.
"Good thing I had an extra pack in the car," she snipped, holding up the cigarettes.
"And it was a good thing I did not lock my car, because I can't find my purse."
She sat on the gazebo steps.
.
"Eva, please ..."
.
She held up her hand, to stop me.
I stood there silently, just staring at the back of her head. I honestly did not know what to say.
.
"Who do you talk to all the time, Will?" She asked, finally, without turning around.
.
"I don't know what you mean," I lied.
.
"The hell with this," she snapped, as she stood up, flicking her cigarette over the cliff, in front of her.
"I've had enough of this bullshit."
She grabbed the camera and started walking away from me, as quickly as she could.
.
"Eva, wait," I begged.
.
She turned quickly and started stomping back toward me, her finger pointing at me.
"Look I was married to one asshole who made me feel like an idiot. I am not going to be involved with another one. Now the truth or I walk and believe me Will Templeton, you will never and I mean NEVER, see me again."
.
I was dumbfounded. I didn't know what to say. I didn't want to lose Evangeline, but I didn't want to lose Whisper either.
.
Whisper watched, from the veranda and listened. She was invisible to Will, at the moment, so she could do so. She wanted to see what would transpire.
At first, she was happy when she saw they were arguing, but the look on Will's face and the tears in his eyes soon changed that feeling.
They were yelling at each.
She watched Evangeline storm off and get in her car, obviously in the same emotional state as the man she called Daddy.
Suddenly she knew what to do.
.
Whisper appeared in front of me.
"Tell her, Daddy."
.
"No. I won't risk losing you," I told her sadly.
.
"Tell her, before it is too late."
.
I watched as her car turned and headed toward my front gate. Evangeline always kept a spare car key magnetized to the underside of her car.
"It is already too late," I sighed.
.
Whisper disappeared.
.
The car suddenly stopped.
.
Whisper appeared again.
"Tell her," she said gently, kissing my cheek.
"You have to tell her."
She disappeared.
.
Evangeline jumped out of her car and stormed toward me, screaming.
"What the hell is going on?"
.
I saw Whisper at the doorway.
"Tell her Daddy. I love you."
.
"I love you too," I told her, tears building in my eyes.
.
"What?," Evangeline snapped, believing I was talking to her.
"I can't believe this. I must be an idiot magnet."
She turned again and started walking back toward her car.
.
"Her name is Whisper."
.
She stopped and slowly turned.
"What?"
.
"Her name is Whisper."
.
"What are you mumbling about?"
.
"You wanted to know what the image in the picture was and who I talk to, all the time.
Well, I am telling you.
Her name is Whisper."
.
Evangeline stared at me for the longest time, a complete blank look on her face.
"You're serious?"
.
I walked toward her and took her hand.
.
She pulled away, immediately.
"What are you doing?"
.
I wiped the tears from my eyes.
"Please, Eva, come with me."
.
I started toward the house, but she was not following.
"I am not going back in there, until you tell me what is going on."
.
I stopped and looked back at her.
"Come in and I will show you."
.
She took her cigarettes from her blouse pocket and lit one. I could see she was shaking.
.
I walked back to her.
"Please. I will get you back your coat and purse and then you can leave. I wouldn't blame you a bit."
.
"No lies Will," she demanded, as she drew heavily on the cigarette and threw it on the ground, stomping it hard, as though making a point.
"Or I will be out of here so fast, your head will spin around."
.
I shook my head. "No lies."
I offered her my hand.
.
She ignored me and walked past me, pushing me slightly, as she did so.
.
I could see Whisper in the kitchen window.
"It has to be this way Daddy. I see that now."
.
"Are you coming?" she yelled from the veranda.
"I am not going in there alone."
.
Tears filled my eyes. I wiped them, as I walked to the veranda.
Slowly I walked inside.
