Whisper looked at me.
"Daddy? What do I do?"
.
I turned to Cavelle.
"Who are you talking to?"
.
She smiled at me, but turned back to Whisper.
"I be talkin' to dis beautiful little girl in front of me. Youse kno, da one that be following' youse around all night."
.
Whisper disappeared and reappeared in my lap.
"I think she can see me, Daddy," she whispered.
.
Cavelle sipped her beer, turning to me, laughing slightly.
"Of course ise sees youse, little one."
She stared into my eyes.
"She does 'ave a name, don't she?"
.
Whisper looked up at me.
"I know she can see me now."
.
I put my arms around Whisper.
"Tell her your name, sweetie."
.
Whisper smiled, looking at Cavelle.
"My name is Whisper."
.
Cavelle smiled.
"That is such a beautiful name."
.
Whisper beamed, literally.
"Daddy gave me that name."
.
Cavelle looked at me.
"She calls you Daddy?"
.
I nodded.
"When I first met her, she couldn't remember her name. I gave her the name Whisper and she has been like a daughter to me, ever since."
.
Whisper jumped off my lap and walked to Cavelle.
"You can see me?"
.
"Yes, little one. My family been able to see Spirits fer ever.
Well, at least da women can. Da men, dey not be able to."
She reached her hand to Whisper.
"I am Cavelle."
.
Whisper took her hand.
"My real name is Jenny Dove."
.
Cavelle looked at me.
"Aw. Dat be why your's Daddy was int'rested in ours family.
Cavelle looked back at Whisper. "She be beautiful. 'ow long 'ave you known 'er?"
.
"Whisper and I have been together for a couple years. Well, since I moved into my house in Maynard's Rock."
.
"She be a long way from 'ome. Most Spirits, dey can't be dat far."
.
Whisper smiled.
"I am a guardian angel. I am Daddy's guardian angel."
.
"Den your Daddy be a lucky man."
Cavelle patted her lap.
"Come, sit with me."
.
Whisper looked at me questioningly.
.
"Go ahead, hun."
.
Whisper appeared in Cavelle's lap.
Cavelle put one arm around her.
"She was not with youse, when youse was 'ere da first time."
.
I shook my head.
"Something happened and she disappeared."
.
"Dat be part of yer sadness, dat time?"
.
I nodded.
"The biggest part. I just had to get away."
.
She reached across and took my hand.
"We be so glad dat youse came 'ere, Will. And Ise be glad dat tings 'ave worked out fer youse and Whisper."
.
Whisper looked at me, smiling.
"She is a good woman, Daddy. I can feel it."
.
Cavelle kissed the top of Whisper's head.
"Thank youse, child."
She looked back at me.
"I 'ave seed many Spirits in me life, Will, but she is da most amazin' dat Ise ever seed."
.
Whisper turned and hugged Cavelle.
"You are amazing too, Mrs. Dove, but I am going to go inside now. I think Ghost and Spirit are lonely."
.
Cavelle turned to see the two cats scratching at the window.
She started laughing and kissed Whisper again, on the top of the head.
"You go child."
.
Whisper appeared in front of me and I gave her a goodnight hug.
"Night, Daddy."
I kissed her and she disappeared.
.
Immediately the two cats jumped out of the window.
.
Cavelle held her glass out to me.
"Dere be one more drink dere fer me, Will?"
.
I filled it again.
"Always."
.
She sipped her drink and sat back in the chair.
I threw a couple more logs on the fire.
.
"Like Ise said before, Will. Youse be one lucky man."
.
"I am," I nodded.
"Very lucky."
I looked at Cavelle.
"So, you saw her at the dining room?"
.
Cavelle nodded.
"Of course. She be a liv'ly one, she be. Singin' and dancin'."
.
"She likes to be a part of everything," I laughed.
"It is hard to exclude her."
.
"Youse be very lucky, Will, me son. It be a special gift dat you 'ave."
.
"Gift?"
.
"To see da Spirits, Will."
She looked at me, a strange look on her face.
"Youse seed others?"
.
I hesitated slightly, sipping my scotch.
.
She started laughing.
"Dat answers me question, me son."
.
I nodded.
"There has been one other."
.
"Youse talked to dis Spirit?"
.
"Yea. he is the ghost of an old fisherman."
.
"Spirit, Will. Dey like being' called Spirits."
.
"Really?"
.
"Yis, boy. Ghosts makes dem seem like dey are some sort be evil tings. And dey are not evil, Will. Some might be a little unhappy, but dey be not evil."
.
I had to agree.
"The two I have met certainly aren't."
.
She sat back.
"Youse will see more Will, me boy. Dat be a certainty."
.
I started laughing.
"Now, I don't know if that is something I really want."
.
She turned to me, very serious.
"Yes, me son. Always be 'appy 'bout dat. It is such an 'mazin' gift you 'ave."
.
"I never really thought about it to be honest, Cavelle. I moved into my house and Whisper was there. It didn't even bother me. It just felt right. And she has been a part of my life ever since.
The other Spirit, Franklin, just sort of appeared one day."
I laughed slightly.
"He is a unique character."
.
"Youse will find dey all be, Will."
She finished her drink and stood up.
"I best be gettin' back to me family."
.
I stood and we hugged. I really liked this woman.
"Thank you for the company, Cavelle. And for understanding."
.
She kissed my cheek.
"Youse be a wonderful man, Will. 'ank and Ise thinks da world be you."
She held my hands for a second and then walked away.
.
I sat back at the fire and poured another drink.
As I lit another cigar I heard Whisper in my head.
'Those things stink, Daddy.'
.
I had to laugh.
'I don't care, little girl.'
.
She giggled.
.
We stayed in the Twillingate area for almost a week.
I took Whisper around to all the sights that were included on the Motel's website and Cavelle and Hank took us to some other, secret places.
.
One, in particular, the Crying Pond, was really of interest to Whisper.
Legend had it that a baby was drowned in the pond and when the wind blew from a certain direction, you could hear the baby cry.
Cavelle took us there on a particular night when the wind was coming from the east.
.
"Can youse 'ear it?"
.
Whisper and I could hear it, as plain as day.
Whisper disappeared immediately.
.
I laughed.
"I guess Nancy Drew is gone to investigate."
I lit a cigarette.
"So why isn't Hank here?"
.
Cavelle laughed.
"'e be a little freaked by dis," she laughed.
"'e doesn't come 'ere at all."
.
Whisper appeared a few minutes later, laughing.
"Its the wind blowing through the rocks over there," she pointed.
"No Spirits here at all."
.
Cavelle later took us to the local cemetery.
We stood in front of Cavelle's grandmother's headstone.
.
Cavelle knelt in front of the headstone.
"She was my fav'rite person in da world."
.
Whisper disappeared.
A moment later, she reappeared, with another Spirit.
.
Cavelle gasped.
"Nanny?"
.
The Spirit knelt in front of Cavelle.
"Cally."
.
Whisper took my hand.
"Let's go, Daddy. They want some time."
.
We walked through the cemetery. Whisper would disappear from time to time
"Lots of interesting people here, Daddy."
.
We eventually ended up on the road outside the cemetery.
.
Cavelle joined us about 30 minutes later.
She went to Whisper and hugged her.
"Thank you, child."
.
Whisper giggled.
"You are welcome, Mrs. Dove."
.
Cavelle kissed her cheek.
"You call me Cally, young lady."
.
When the week was over, we had one last meal with the Dove family, at their house, with Whisper and the cats there and the next morning, early, we left.
.
We made plans for the whole family to come and stay with us in the fall for a week or two, once the busy season was over and of course, Whisper and I were invited to the wedding of Billy and Darlene.
.
When we pulled into the driveway of our home, I got an amazing feeling.
I loved my life.
