I had not seen Hank and Cavelle since November of the previous year, so I decided to pack up Ghost, and Spirit and of course Whisper, and take a trip out to surprise them and to show Whisper some of the island, as well.
The Oceanside Motel had been doing very well, if the wonderful reviews were any indication and the website was one of the best I had ever seen.
Looking through the website reminded me of Evangeline, but it had been over a year since I had received the email from her, informing me she was back with her husband.
Still, the thought of her brought a smile to my face.
.
The trip to Twillingate was absolutely wonderful. What should have been a 4-5 hour drive, ended up being a two day adventure, as Whisper constantly wanted to stop and admire some site that she saw along the way.
From hotels to motels, parks and lookouts, Whisper wanted to visit it all. We stopped at nearly every pond and stream that we passed, just so she could go under water and see the fish.
I will be honest, it did freak me out a little to watch her disappear and I was actually surprised that she would want to go under water, given the fact that she had met her demise in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
.
"I like watching the fish, Daddy and some of the ponds have all kinds of shiny things on the bottom. I tried to get them, but they have hooks that connect them to the bottom."
.
It took me a few moments to realize that what Whisper was seeing, was actually hooks and spinners that unlucky fishermen had hooked in some rock or sunken log, at the bottom of the ponds or streams.
But to Whisper, it was a treasure trove of shiny, somethings.
.
We ended up only getting as far as Gander, the first day, which was only about four hours from the Rock.
We stayed at a local hotel, that allowed pets and I had a wonderful meal from room service. Well me and the cats had a wonderful meal. As always, Whisper had her own plate and I made sure that I only gave her food that the cats would like, as that is where it always ended up.
.
At one point, Whisper disappeared. I found her outside, sitting on a bench at the front of the hotel, watching vehicles go back and forth on the Trans Canada Highway, that ran in front of the hotel.
I sat with her and lit a cigar.
.
"Daddy?"
.
"I know they stink, but I am having one anyway."
.
Whisper snuggled in closer to me.
"Actually, I don't mind the smell, Daddy. And you are still really healthy, despite the fact that you smoke them."
.
I had to smile listening to Whisper talk. She had become so articulate since she had returned and often I forgot that I was talking to an eleven year old girl and not an adult.
"So, what are you doing down here?"
.
She shrugged. "Car and truck watching."
.
I laughed.
"I have heard of people watching, but car and truck watching."
.
"Well, Daddy, I had not seen that many cars and trucks when I was alive. But this road is so full of them. I mean there must be thousands that go by here every day. Just in the time I have been sitting here, there has been 107 cars, 78 trucks and 21 of those big big trucks."
.
"You are counting them?"
.
She nodded.
"Yep. Its fun, Daddy and did you know that there were 486 people in all of those vehicles."
.
"Now how would you know that? They go by here pretty fast."
.
She giggled.
"Remember Daddy, I am a guardian angel. I see a little better than you. I kinda have x-ray vision."
.
"Where did you hear that," I chuckled.
.
"Well Superman has x-ray vision because he can see through things and I can do the same thing.
Except he can't see through lead, for some reason and I can."
.
"Well you are my little Supergirl."
.
We sat there until I finished my cigar. By that time, it was getting dark, so we decided to go back to the room. I wanted to get an early start in the morning.
I told Whisper she could watch television, but instead, she curled up in an arm chair, in the corner of the room and read some of the mountain of comics I had bought her at a local flea market, we had visited, along the way.
I fell asleep to the soft sound of her giggling, at some antics that Archie and his gang had gotten into.
.
We arrived at the Oceanside Motel, mid afternoon. I had telephone Hank earlier in the day to let him know I was coming, just to be sure there was a room waiting for me.
He assured me that I would have the cabin that I had lived in, while I was there the year before.
.
As soon as I unloaded the Rav4, I went to the Pub; Whisper, Spirit and Ghost in tow, with me.
All the renovations had now been finished on the original motel and the annex was now under construction on the old fish plant property that had been purchased for that purpose.
Hank and Cavelle proudly walked me through the new annex, especially the fishing museum.
.
"This is beautiful," I remarked, walking through the huge room.
.
They had done exactly what they had planned and the museum was filled with the old machinery and such from the fish plant, now all cleaned up, with large framed pictures showing each piece as it was and even a gallery of pictures from various stages of the plants life.
They had used as much of the original lumber from the plant as they could. You could almost smell the salt off the weathered wood.
.
They had named the museum, 'The Donald Dove Fisherman Museum', in honour of Hank's late father, who had been a fisherman all his life.
.
"Dad would 'ave been proud," Hank remarked.
"Mudder was in tears, when she saw it."
.
"It is a wonderful tribute," I told Hank.
"I'm sure your father is in heaven smiling."
.
Hank started laughing and slapped me on the back.
"If me father be in 'eaven, me son, i doubts he be smilin'.
Dere be none dere he knows."
.
I enjoyed a wonderful seafood meal, in the new restaurant at the motel and even got a preview of the dinner theatre that would be presented during the summer months, as those in the theatre, who also served at the restaurant, ran through most of their songs and dances, much to the joy of those at the motel.
.
Whisper loved it too, as she tried to sing along with the singers and dance with the dancers.
"This is so much fun, Daddy. We should start our own sing and dance restaurant."
.
'Maybe we will one day, hun. They will be having one at Maynard's Rock, you know.'
.
"Really?"
She appeared in my lap.
"Can I be in the show?"
.
I had to smile.
'We will see.'
.
Later that night the three of us were sharing a drink at the Pub.
.
"I'm going back to the cabin, Daddy."
.
'Okay. You want to take the cats with you.'
.
She called the cats and they ran to her, dancing as soon as they were near her.
.
"Look be dat," Cavelle gasped.
"Ise don't 'member dem doin' that before."
.
I laughed.
"Its a new trick they have when they want to use the cat pans."
I stood up.
"Let me run back to the cabin and let them in. I'll be right back."
.
"I can open the door, Daddy," Whisper reminded me.
.
'I don't think everyone will understand doors magically opening, hun.'
.
Whisper giggled.
"Forgot about that, Daddy."
.
I was gone just ten minutes or so.
When I returned, Cavelle, Hank, Billy and Elaine, were all at the table.
They all had strange smiles on their faces.
.
"Okay. What is going on?"
