Whisper hung around the living room with us for a while, but I think she began feeling sorry for Bobby, as he was definitely not that comfortable.
.
She came to me and kissed me on the cheek.
"I am going to my room, Daddy. You have fun with your friends."
.
"Nite, sweetie. I will come in to tuck you in later."
.
"Say goodnight to Jessie and Bobby for me."
With that she disappeared.
.
"She is gone to bed?" Bobby wondered.
.
I smiled.
"No, she is just gone to her room. She does not sleep. She just wanted some alone time, I guess. She said goodnight to both of you."
.
"Bobby probably scared her off," Jessie chuckled.
"He looks like someone who ..."
She started laughing.
"Just saw a ghost."
.
"Ha, ha," Bobby exaggerated. He turned back to me.
"I'm sorry, Will, but this is going to take some getting used to.
I don't know how you do it."
.
I sat back in my chair and lit a cigar.
"I don't know, my friend, but in all honesty, I was never that freaked out about it. I could sense her right from the beginning and when I realized she was actually real, she just became part of my life.
She is a beautiful young girl and a joy to have around."
.
Bobby took a deep sigh.
"I will do my best."
.
Jessie patted him on the back.
"You will do fine, my big, strong, handsome man."
She chuckled again.
.
We finished our beer and cigars and I walked my friends to the front door. We made plans to record again soon, as we did not really get much done, once Whisper was around.
.
I shut down everything in the house and left the cats fresh water and their nightly treat. I then went to Whisper's room for our nightly chat and tuck in.
Both of us enjoyed this time, because it was a chance for us to be alone and be family.
.
I opened the door to her room, expecting to hear music or the television, but there was no sound at all.
The television wasn't on and neither was the stereo or the computer.
.
I was more than a little confused. Whisper usually had her quiet time, once I was in bed. She would usually sit on her bed and read. I had told her many times, that was not necessary, since the room was soundproof, but she said it made things more real for her.
I turned to her bed and she was there, but not sitting. She was laying on the bed, her arms by her side and her eyes were closed.
At first I thought she was playing a little game with me, but after I called her name a couple times and she did not respond, I became a little concerned.
.
I sat on the edge of her bed and gently called her name. Again, she did not respond.
I leaned in and looked closely at her. I could see that her eyes were moving under her lids, which to me was more than a little bit strange.
.
"Is she actually dreaming?" I wondered, aloud.
.
I was not sure what to do, but I decided that if indeed she was dreaming, then perhaps, I should just wait until she woke on her own. I knew you weren't supposed to wake sleepwalkers and such. Maybe this was a ghost's way of sleepwalking.
I stood and walked to the head of her bed and kissed her cheek. Still no response.
.
I sat quietly in my big arm chair and watched her.
.
~~~~~
.
"Jenny, you have done well so far. Everything seems to be going as we planned. We are very proud of you."
.
Whisper looked around. She could not see anyone, yet the man's voice was crystal clear. She was not sure where she was, as it was simply a white room. No windows, no doors, no furniture, no nothing. She only assumed it was a room because she was standing on something solid.
At least she assumed she was.
.
"But I don't know what your plan is," Whisper said, almost pleading.
"What am I suppose to do?"
.
"Exactly what you are doing." A new voice, a woman's.
"You are there to look after Will and make sure that things go, as they are so planned."
.
"But shouldn't I know what your plan is?" Whisper asked.
"What if I mess things up?"
.
"You won't mess things up," the woman's voice said.
"Things will work out, no matter what little bumps in the road, you might come across."
.
"But I still feel that I should know why I am there. I don't know what is happening."
.
"Do you not like being on Earth with Will?"
The woman's voice was soft and low, almost familiar.
.
"Of course I do. He is my Daddy. I love him, but..."
.
"Then do not worry. All will become clear, as things fall in place. When the time is right, you will know exactly what to do."
.
"How long do I have?" Whisper wondered.
.
"As long as it takes, but..."
.
There was silence for a moment and the man's voice came back.
"It will be soon, Jenny. All that is planned, will fall into place soon."
.
"And then what?"
Whisper's voice was trembling.
.
"Then you become an angel, of course."
.
For the first time in a long time Whisper was scared. Not in the fear sense of the word, but scared because her time with Will could be short.
"Why can't I just stay?"
.
"That is not how it works Jenny. You must come back," the man's voice said, quickly.
"Don't you want to be an angel?"
.
"I want to be with Will."
.
"That is not how this works," the man snapped.
"And you have to do it, the way it is supposed to be done."
.
Whisper started to cry. "But I want to stay with Will. I want to be with Daddy."
.
"We are sorry Jenny, that is not how it works."
The woman's voice again. Calm and soothing, even a little sad.
.
"No, there has to be a way," Whisper begged.
"There has to be."
.
"It is the way it is, Jenny," the man's voice snapped back.
.
"No," Whisper snapped back, defiantly, "I will make it different."
.
"You will do, as you are supposed to do."
The man's voice was getting irritated and louder.
"And that is all you will do."
.
"NO," Whisper yelled.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOO."
.
~~~~~
.
Whisper's eyes opened and she turned.
When she saw me, she disappeared from the bed and appeared on my lap, her arms around my neck, her head on my shoulder.
"I love you Daddy. I love you so much."
.
"I love you too sweetie."
I put my arms around her. "What's wrong? You looked like you were dreaming."
.
Whisper sat back in my arms and put on a brave smile. "I am a spirit Daddy. We don't dream. I was just pretending."
.
"I don't know," I joked.
"Looked pretty real to me."
.
She playfully slapped my shoulder. It felt like a feather hitting me.
"Daddy? You are just being silly."
.
She was obviously trying to convince me.
I was not convinced.
