Bobby picked up his guitar and tried to strum a few chords.
"What is with all the instruments?"
He looked at me puzzled. "This one is like all the rest. Every single one is out of tune. Every night is the same thing."
.
Jessie started tuning her bass.
"This one is out, again, too."
.
I shook my head. "I don't know unless it's the humidity in here, or the dryness."
.
Jessie gave me a weird look. "We are in a sound proof, climate controlled environment. There is no humidity, no dryness. It is a perfect temperature.
If I didn't know any better, I would say that someone is deliberately putting all the instruments out of tune."
She glared at me.
.
"Oh right," I defended myself.
"That is just what I do. Come down here before we start playing, just so I can put all the instruments out of tune."
.
I heard Whisper giggle. She was sitting on top of an amplifier in the far corner.
'Whisper?'
.
"Sorry Daddy."
.
I shook my head and finished tuning my guitar.
.
"What were you looking at Will?"
.
I turned to Jessie.
"Sorry?"
.
"You looked over in the corner.
What were you looking at?"
She reminded me that there was only an amplifier there.
.
I shook my head.
"Oh, just thinking. That dumb look on my face is me thinking."
.
"You have been thinking a lot lately, it seems."
.
Bobby gave Jessie a high five.
"Good one, hun."
.
"You guys are so funny."
.
Since February rolled in, the three of us got together a couple times a week, or more, to hang around my recording studio, playing songs, writing some original material and even doing a little recording.
This particular night, we were going over our playlist. We were playing a birthday party at the Dove Family Community Center on Saturday night, so we decided to have a quick run through our songs.
And I wanted to make sure that the drum and percussion backups were all properly timed.
.
Whisper loved sitting around the recording studio, while we were there, but for some reason, she had gotten into the habit of playing with the strings on the instruments, when she was alone in the studio.
.
"They make a funny sound, if I pluck the strings and turn the little knobby thing on the top."
.
I explained to her that when she did that, we had to spend time, putting all the instruments back in tune.
I promised her I would buy her a guitar, bass and mandolin for her room, if she stopped playing with the ones in the recording studio.
She agreed immediately.
So, hopefully this night would be the last one of mysterious out of tunes.
.
After the practice, we were having a beer.
Jessie was listening to a playback, on a new song we were working on.
"What the hell?"
She stopped the tape and rewound it. Again she played the chorus to the song.
"That is strange."
.
"What's wrong hun?" Bobby asked.
.
"A girl's voice," she commented.
.
"A what?"
.
She took off her headset and passed it to Bobby. "Listen."
.
I put on a second set so I could listen as well. As sure as the sun rising, you could hear, in the background, the sound of a young girl's voice.
.
They both looked at me. I shrugged my shoulders and looked around. Whisper was no where to be found.
.
"Will? Will?"
Jessie yelled at me, "Will?"
.
"What?"
.
"Whose voice is that?" Jessie asked, a hint of demand in her voice.
.
I hated lying, but, "I don't know. Must be some kind of echo effect."
.
Jessie rewound the tape again and took out my voice. The girl's voice was very clear.
"That is no echo, Will."
.
I must have had that dumb look on my face again.
.
"Thinking again Will?"
Suddenly her face lit up.
"Oh my stars."
She walked to me, staring in my face.
"She is back."
.
"Who is?" I asked, innocently.
.
"Jenny. Whisper. You little ghost."
.
Whisper appeared next to me.
"Tell them the truth Daddy. They do know about me."
.
I took a deep breath.
"She came back New Years."
.
"WHAT?" Jessie yelled.
"And you are just letting us know now?"
.
"Well," I shrugged.
"It just never really came up."
.
Bobby looked around.
"The ghost is back?"
.
I nodded.
"But she is here this time as my guardian angel."
.
Bobby went to the refrigerator and got another beer.
"She is here, right now?"
Bobby sat on a chair, near the refrigerator.
.
Whisper sat on a chair next to Bobby. She reached across and touched his arm.
.
I could see his expression changed.
"What the?"
He rubbed his arm, looking down at it and then at the chair next to him..
.
"What is it hun?"
.
"I don't know. But it felt like someone touched me."
Bobby looked a little freaked.
He stood up and moved from the chair.
.
Jessie was smiling.
"She was there?"
.
I nodded.
"She is sitting in the chair next to Bobby."
I laughed.
"Well, where Bobby was sitting."
.
Bobby moved a little farther away.
"Okay. Now I am a little more freaked."
.
Jessie walked to the chair, where Bobby had been sitting.
"Why haven't I been able to feel her?" she wondered, as she sat down.
.
"I don't know, Jess. She is always here."
.
Whisper walked in front of Jessie. She reached out and touched her hand.
"Ok. The hair on my neck just stood up."
She looked straight ahead.
"She is here, isn't she?"
.
I pointed in front of her.
"She is standing right in front of you. She just touched your hand."
.
Jessie was all smiles
"I wish I could see her."
.
I nodded.
"Would you like to see her?"
.
Jessie shrieked, "Yes."
.
Bobby begged, "No."
.
I laughed. "You will be okay, Bobby. She is just a little girl."
I looked at Whisper.
"Ok hun, you can show yourself."
.
Jessie looked around.
"Where is she, Will?"
.
Whisper looked at me. "They can't see me Daddy."
.
"How come?" I wondered aloud.
.
Bobby looked at me. "Who are you talking to?"
.
"Whisper," I answered.
.
"We can't see her, can we?" Jessie pouted.
.
I shook my head. "I don't think so Jess."
.
"I guess they aren't supposed to see me," Whisper attempted to explain.
.
"But why?"
.
She shrugged her shoulders.
"I don't know, Daddy."
.
I looked at Jessie.
"I'm sorry, but for some reason, she can't materialize."
.
"I have an idea," Whisper smiled.
She walked to a small desk. She picked up the pen and wrote on the notepad.
.
Jessie watched as the pen, seemingly moved all by itself. She walked over to the desk. "Oh my stars."
.
Whisper had written on the pad.
'Hello Jessie and Bobby.'
.
She tore the page off the pad and held it toward Bobby, so he could see.
"Look at this. Isn't is just amazing?"
.
Bobby shook his head.
"Amazing is not the word I would use. Freaky would be better suited."
.
Whisper wrote another note.
'I will try not to freak you, Bobby.'
.
Bobby forced a laugh.
"Ok, I am a lot freaked now."
.
I walked to Bobby and put my arm around his shoulder. "She is an eleven year old girl, my friend. And she is the sweetest little angel that you could ever know."
I looked at Whisper. I had to smile.
"Love you, sweetie."
.
"I love you, Daddy. And I love Bobby and Jessie."
.
I patted Bobby's back.
"She just told me that she loves you and Jess."
.
Bobby just nodded.
.
I had to laugh.
"Come on. Lets go upstairs and have a drink."
.
I saw Whisper hold Jessie's hand. Jessie looked down and smiled.
"Let's go hun."
