Happier than ever (Bakudeku song fic)
I don't tend to do song fics, but Loveless' version of Happier than ever was so very perfect for angsty bakudeku.

"Where's Deku?"
Uraraka glanced over at him, mouth dipping into a frown as Bakugou pushed past a couple extras and glanced over at the empty stage. She was stood with most of their UA class, excluding Jirou who avoided concerts due to her quirk, and Kouta who was abroad.
Since they'd graduated most of the class had stayed in decent contact, some closer than others naturally and Bakugou dragged in by Ashido and Kirishima protesting loudly as he went.
"You missed him," Uraraka's tone was edged in a faint disapproval, "he said you would. He's had to go get make up done before his turn."
Bakugou ignored the dig, brushing it off with barely a thought. "Why's he bothering with make up, nothing can improve his shitty face."
Kirishima rolled his eyes, throwing an affectionate arm over his shoulder, "dude, you dated him, are you saying your taste is bad?"
Bakugou leered, "nah, his mouth was good for something other than mumbling."
Kirishima as usual, took his casual insults as light hearted and chuckled, Kaminari joining in. Most of the class also laughed or flushed, though Uraraka and Iida exchanged indecipherable looks.
His relationship with the nerd had been on and off for years. And he expected it would continue as such even if the last break up was particularly bad. Deku needed him after all. As usual, Izuku was his insecure self and hadn't explained why they'd fought so Bakugou had spun it the way he wanted. Just a few references to Izuku's obsessive stalkery tendencies in high school and no one was questioning whether Bakugou was the one at fault. It was fun making them all distance from Izuku, punishing him for thinking he deserved better than Bakugou's attentions.
Applause drew the group's attention to the stage and Bakugou couldn't help a small smirk. Deku was a nerd with the personality of a rabbit, but he was pretty to look at when he wasn't talking, and he hadn't been lying, that mouth featured in most of his fantasies. He'd never tell Deku that though, compliments were powerful only when they were rarely given, a lesson Aizawa taught him; however unintentionally.
Deku was dressed in a flattering suit, with a green waistcoat, no blazer and shirt rolled up to show his admittedly muscular forearms. The sharp eyeliner did make his stupid eyes look better and Bakugou decided he'd enjoy smudging it later when Izuku let him in. A little shuffling and a compliment on his shitty singing would have him back in the dumbasses' flat in a moment.
Izuku looked over the crowd and caught Bakugou's eyes. Bakugou was just debating what expression to make but the man had moved on before he got the chance and Bakugou had to swallow a snarl at the insult.
The greenette smiled brightly at the crowd, introducing himself in that dorky way the masses seemed to love, and prattling on about the charity the concert was for.
Present Mic had set it up, several heroes volunteering to perform with all the money being put towards children's charities or some other goody two shoes bullshit Bakugou hadn't really cared about. It had surprised everyone when the number one hero 'Dekiru' (renamed after their second break up) announced he'd be performing, it was only when that came out that Bakugou bought tickets. It was the opportunity he'd been waiting for, since the one night stands weren't as much fun without Izuku's reaction to look forward to.
"So, most of you guys know me to be kinda shy." Izuku was saying, his words earning a laugh from the stadium, "so it might surprise you that I'm gonna be singing a rock song today."
Excited murmuring rose from the crowd, and Bakugou couldn't help but be surprised himself. He didn't actually know what music Deku liked, he never gave enough shits to find out, but he'd have thought the nerd would be a pop music, swifty or some other whiny acoustic crap.
He smiled though, like Izuku could pull off screaming into a microphone, all the presence of a mouse. He was about to look so stupid, and all the more likely to crawl back to Bakugou.
"Yeah I know," Izuku grinned, "what can I say, it's always the vanilla ones who are secretly emo."
Bakugou had no idea what that was supposed to mean, but it got the shitty nerd another laugh.
"Anyways," Izuku seemed to brace himself a little, "I have spent my life trying to save and protect as many people was possible so I was wondering, would you guys mind if I was a little selfish tonight?"
There were whoops from the crowd and Izuku relaxed, always such a cowardly people pleaser, "thanks guys. In that case, the song I'm singing is a message to someone. Someone special."
There were lots of excited gasps from the crowd.
Izuku chuckled, "I'm afraid you're not about to get a heroic love confession, sorry guys. Though I'll have to explain a little so you understand what it is about."
He ran a hand through his hair, "there have been a lot of conspiracies about me and the number two hero Dynamight. I can confirm that we dated on and off for several years."
Bakugou stilled as the class turned to look at him.
They'd not kept their relationship a secret from their friends, but Izuku had been adamant about keeping it from the public.
He wanted to build a long term relationship and wanted the privacy to do that. The fact he was giving up that privacy meant the last break up was a lot more of a big deal than Bakugou had realised. He could fix it though, he scowled at the thought of the extra effort though. Stupid Deku making rash decisions.
"We broke up, again, a month ago. For the last time." Izuku continued, "Despite my tendency to ramble..." he shared a smile with the crowd, "I didn't really get to say what I wanted to to him, back then...and if you guys don't mind I'd like to sing a song, in his genre, that'll get what I want across."
There were cheers again, but more subdued at the thought of a sad break up song instead of an upbeat love confession. Bakugou frowned at the public announcement that it was the end, but he decided to plan his next moves after he heard what ever shitty song Izuku wanted him to hear.
Izuku took the mic from its stand and nodded at the band that had taken up places on the stage.
The electric guitar started up, and then Izuku was singing.
"You called me again, drunk in your Benz
Driving home under the influence...
You scared me to death, but I'm wasting my breath
'Cause you only listen to your fucking friends."
He could sing. Bakugou gave him that. He had called Izuku drunk a few times, weaker when he wasn't sober. He also learned quickly that Izuku's saviour complex could be manipulated very easily, and got them back together using it a fair few times.
"I don't relate to you
I don't relate to you, no.
'Cause I'd never treat me this shitty
You make me hate this city."
Bakugou was starting to get the feeling he wasn't going to be able to tidy up this new mess Deku was making easily. He could feel eyes on his back and knew some were the friends Izuku was mentioning. He'd have to do a lot of damage control, and was glad he was stood in front of them so he wouldn't have to calculate which expressions to make, live.
"And I don't talk shit about you on the internet
Never told anyone anything bad
'Cause that shit's embarrassing, you were my everything
And all that you did was make me fucking sad."
Bakugou could feel people starting to edge away from him. A circle of space forming and the number of eyes doubling. He couldn't look away from Izuku though, the nerd staring right at him with those big eyes, actual hatred in them for all to see. He wished the prick would look away now, but he was trapped by that stare and surrounded by witnesses.
"So don't waste the time I don't have," Izuku hissed, striding to the edge of the stage, voice dark with intent. "Don't try to make me feel bad."
"I could talk about every time that you showed up on time
But I'd have an empty line, 'cause you never did." He could feel Uraraka's eyes, cold and accusing, but he was trapped, surrounded by emerald green.
"Never paid any mind to my mother or friends, so I
Shut 'em all out for you 'cause I was a kid." Izuku had hopped off the stage, and the crowd parted as he walked up to Bakugou, all sharp edges and pain.
"You ruined everything good,
Always said you were misunderstood..."
Was this song a cover or did Izuku write it himself? It was disturbingly accurate and Bakugou struggled not to flinch under the weight of that gaze as the abusive relationship was laid out for everyone to see and recorded to live rent free on the internet and haunt him for the rest of his life.
"Made all my moments your own
Just fucking leave me alone."
Izuku screamed the last line and they were nose to nose when the instrumental kicked in.
"I'm filing for a restraining order." Izuku murmured away from the mic though it still barely caught it. "You've stained enough of my good memories black. And sent me to Recovery Girl far too many times, gaslighted me, abused me. I'm not covering for you, I'm not lying to my friends or yours to spare you ever again. I've given up too many tears trying to save you Bakugou Katsuki. You are the one person I officially give up trying to save."
He walked backward to the stage, keeping his eyes on Bakugou's.
"I don't relate to you,
I don't relate to you, no.
'Cause I'd never treat me this shitty
You make me hate this city."
He bowed to the audience in the awed silence that followed, before turning and making for the wings. Shinsou Hitoshi left them to meet him half way, and Izuku buried his head in the mind controller's shoulder, shuddering slightly as the taller man led him out of view.
The moment they disappeared, all eyes were on Bakugou.
He swallowed at the shear weight of the killing intent in the room and turned to look at his classmates of years.
All the blood seemed to have left them, Kirishima especially was physically trembling as he stared at Bakugou like he didn't recognise him. "Eijirou." He mumbled, his voice sounding very loud in the silent hall.
Kirishima looked away from him to the empty stage. "How many times has he lied for you? How...he isn't clumsy at all, he's never tripped on a patrol...that was all you was it? I thought...I thought you were getting better but...he was just getting better at hiding."
Bakugou couldn't meet those crimson eyes so like his own.
His silence probably made him look a thousand times more guilty than any placating phrases but his mind was blank. He'd always wondered what Izuku's breaking point would look like, he'd been trying to reach it since he was a kid.
He should have known better, should have known the anger of a gentle man would be world ending. Because this was the end of his world. Izuku was probably the most well loved public figure in Japan, and his accusations caught on thousands of phone cameras will haunt Bakugou both in public and private life until his dying day.
And Izuku wasn't pressing charges, so he would have to continue living and facing them every day.
———
Turned out the song Izuku was singing was called 'Happier than ever'. It was appropriate too, since Izuku married Shinsou Hitoshi six months after the cursed concert, and became a global treasure, known and loved hero the world over.
Bakugou's hero agency went bust as every person quit within weeks of the concert going viral and found work elsewhere unlike him who couldn't even get groceries let alone a job interview. All the Bakusquad cut contact knowing exactly what it meant for Midoriya Izuku to be pushed so far he gave up.
He had to emigrate to Europe, where his face was at least less likely to be recognised, and live off what savings he'd made. He'd sent his parents his new address in London and a number, but neither had contacted him. He was pathetically grateful, he doubted he could handle the weight of their disappointment.
