chapter 5 | cheese fries
Another park day. Yay me. Thought I'd freshen up a little bit, even though that's equivalent to bringing my Algebra homework along to the park with me. However, my only plan of the day is to get my ass off my bed, away from this house. Anywhere but home.
Ah the alfresco vibe is always my favorite; intertwining the nostalgic fondness.
I am deeply lost on my paperwork when out of the blue, a random person, or maybe two, comes over; making an attempt of cutting my sight with what I believe is his or her hands. I don't even know. Horrifying thoughts occupy my traumatised mind as it prepares for the worst.
Probably a kidnapper? A rapist? While the sun is up? Not a very smart idea guys, get your timing right next time.
Everything around is fast-forward, and then there's me, motionless. Surprises and I never seem to get along.
Gathering my senses, I stomp up, also shoving my hands up the attacker's face, leaving my belongings on the ground. I groan, and 101% sure that the whole park's eyes are on me- willing to help, I suppose?
Or no, I don't think so.
"Ouch." A very familiar voice catches me off guard.
I sigh in relief. "God Devin, I almost passed out because of you."
"Thank god you didn't." He grins as a chuckle escapes him. "Am I that scary to you?"
Placing my thumb on the red mark I left on his cheek, his eyes follows the movement of my hand. "I think I forgot to cut my nails."
Your fault, not mine.
"Don't worry, it's nothing."
I roll my eyes, and curiosity washes over me. "What are you doing here again, you freak?"
That was rude. Oops.
His shrugs, and casually lets out a very reasonable point, "Well the park is open for public."
"Seriously, I mean why are you--"
"I had football at school, as usual." He probably saw my car again at the parking lot. But I'm still startled in confusion. Isn't today Saturday?
I've been buried with school work, that I'm literally at the point of not knowing what day today is.
"But today is Saturday?" coming out more of like a question than a statement. He slides onto the bench I am sitting on, looking over at my trigonometry homework lying helplessly on the ground. I pick it up.
"Oh yeah we have practices on Saturdays too."
Right. How can I forget about that? Dean always come over to my house every afternoon on Saturdays after his football practice for lunch since my parents are barely home at the time. We'd take over the kitchen and cook some pancakes or waffles. It doesn't always end up good but times like this is something we call "Quality time" together. Before forgetting to mention, smoothies are also our good company. And the patio in my backyard would complete us, followed by rare sun giving Portland's cloudless azure sky the spotlight. Perfect. Just like our first date.
"Anyways, what are you up to?" he leans over, peering my math copybook that's sitting on my lap. "Woah my baby Algebra," he acknowledges.
What even?
"Ew!"
He takes a quick glance at me, then at the park, then back at me, "Are you actually here eyeing on the dudes or working on your homework?" He winks.
I face him, both giving him the dirty look and also trying to study his kinky behaviour. "Jerk."
Devin laughs so hard that he snorted and I sigh. "Easy, Adeline. I was just joking."
"Sure."
"Here, let me help you on your homework."
Surprisingly, this talented man doesn't only play football. Quite a genius as well. That math homework didn't take me as much time since Devin came exactly with the help that I needed. Two thumbs up for this human!
An hour letter, we find ourself chit-chatting about some random stuff, which resorts into an argument, wether chickens can fly or not. Yes, crazy. I know. But this guy is beyond my every nerves that he is very reluctant on my belief that chickens are classified as birds, they have wings, and to conclude, in the most logical idea, chickens can fly.
Boy, I might not be good in biology, but my logic suits perfectly just fine at the logic lane.
"I will prove you wrong."
I nod in the most assuring way that this time, I'm not wrong. Well, let's be real. I'm never wrong and that's a fact.
"Don't be surprised if I ever come to your house one day with my laptop and my objection PowerPoint that will bring you down with utter embarrassment."
I rest my elbow on the top edge of the wooden bench, knuckle of mine on the left part of my head and I adjust my face towards his as I put on my sly smile. I lean in, covering one-third of the space that distant the two of us. Already close enough that I can smell his scent, almost familiar to Dean and Aiden's that I have this insane theory about Northwest High's football players using the same soap, cologne, perfume, deodorant or whatever fragrance they use hat shares them the same smell.
Sexy and luxurious.
I murmur, "Sure thing, Kyle."
Not a single clue flickers our mind on how we headed our conversation to the chicken argument, but my hungry stomach decides to growl back to life, loud enough to inform the world how irresponsible I am.
I haven't eaten anything since today morning. Oh shit.
"I am doubtful on your stamina." He crosses his arm, as he observes him. I raise my eyebrow. "Do arguments require you a lot of energy?"
"No, I'm just hungry. My last meal was at 7 am."
"Well," -he stands from his spot and lend me his left hand- "let's have some lunch then." I take it.
"Where are we eating?"
I gather my math book and pencil case, shoving it into my tote bag, and Devin lifting his usual gym bag from the ground. "I'm craving for some cheese fries, so, The Burger House it is." He looks back at me, with his gym bag over his shoulder. "Don't worry, all you gotta do is just sit back. I get scared sitting on the passenger seat when a hungry driver drives."
I pass on a skeptical look. "Well I get scared when strangers drive my car. Not that it ever happened."
"Adeline, I'm only taking you to The Burger House, nowhere else. And besides like, I have a driving license. I pretty sure know how to drive."
I've never had anyone outside the family drive my car before. Technically, Aiden's car. Not that I care about where he's taking me, but trusting people has never been easy. Even to the smallest problem. Though, how can anyone ever say no to this guy? It's like saying no to a puppy.
I inhale a deep breath and roll my eyes. "God you're so demanding," taking my keys out of my bag and tossing it to him, as he perfectly catches it.
"I know."

The Burger House is rather a place where the youths would spend an hour at. It's got a fantastic mouthwatering burgers in town that absolutely beats Burger King's and I love Burger King. I hope that's descriptive enough to visualise how amazing its burgers are. The red walls of the diner have some old-fashioned guitars and vinyls hanging. And paintings of burgers. Yes, burgers. Probably one of the main reasons why I like it here. -Very distinctive.
And I almost forgot to mention about their majestic glory. The Cheese Fries. I'd do anything to wake up with one every single morning.
We savour our food through the din of silence. Not the awkward kind of silence, not even the comfort silence. Just pure silence, enough for the delicateness.
In the midst of my dark thoughts about the majestic glory, Devin clears his throat, wiping his mouth with the napkin the waitress provided him with, but not me.
Dear waitress, next time, please show love to costumers equally. Thank you.
"Adeline Wade."
"That's right."
"Do you have any more homework that needs to be done? Or any studying?"
I take my phone out of my pocket to check my list for the day. "According to my Things-to-do list, that is it for the day."
"That's great then," he announces cheerfully.
"What?"
"I'd like to bring you somewhere."
"Uh, Devin?"
He laughs at my reaction, shaking his head in a disbelief. "You do have a dirty mind, don't you?"
Uh no I don't.
"Well I barely know you, and right at this point, you're telling me that you're going to bring me somewhere, how am I not supposed to be suspicious huh."
"First of all, Dean will beat the shit out of me if he ever finds out about me kidnapping you. Second of all, that's not going to happen because guess what?"
"What?"
"I don't want to end up with anyone calling 9-9-1 directed to the hospital nor the police station. Heck, I'm still looking forward for my bright future."
"You do have a good sense of humour."
"I wasn't trying to be funny."
