kaz brekker ₰ vera bardot
were a tragedy written by the cruellest playwright.
𝔉orgive, but never forget your enemies, they say. Well, according to the girl born in midst of a callous war—the one with a paper-fragile heart and terrified skin always pale like white lilies—, fuck that absolute blether. Never forgive and never forget!
Snowflakes fell like butterflies. It stung her skin, each flake like an ember upon flesh and the wind was a bitter chill against her face. It was early for winter but perhaps even the sky mirrored the dismal world it watched over, shadowed by the callous Fold.
A woman crippled through the dark murk of night, a baby carefully bundled in the thick blackness of her Kefta. All was dark but the warm flow, the deep pools of the light, of the orphanage ahead. She took her last breath just as the entryway of the haunted house opened, leaving her bleeding baby girl to the mercy of the caretakers.
Under a tuft of citrus-red hair over her forehead, her glinting eyes were wide open — ever vigilant. In a crowd of other alike joyous children, she was an outcast.
Loneliness was all she understood, with blood of strangers in her veins and a growing power she could not comprehend. The feeling of isolation, the type one gets after the heartbreak and agony, the type where the hurt becomes so average you expect it. That you come to enjoy its presence for it cannot leave you like everything else. The little girl grew up from toddler to teen with her honour thrashed apart brick by brick at the Saints-forsaken orphanage.
So she ran.
Everything Vera Bardot knows, she knows because of General Kirigan. At mere age of seventeen, the young Grisha was plucked by the infamous Shadow Summoner from the heart of a forest at the Ravkan and Fjerdan border. He sees her; caught in a battle of life and death with drüskelle soldiers, Vera learns for the first time the true power of her own soul when her bare palms produces the notorious blue fire.
It was the Darkling, noble general of the second army, who assisted her in coming terms with her power, mentored her personally for years on. Although he leads on intimidation and cold threats, he wishes to get justice for Grisha and end the callous war, to convince the world that they are not deserving of hatred.
You and I are going to change the world, he mused to the young and terrified girl, enamoured by her power than was almost as rare as sun and shadow summoners. The Darkling wove her into the powerful young lady she is today using his mere hands and alluring words.
To be Grisha is to be a soldier. To be a soldier is to be a servant of nature and protect the threatened at every corner, all while carry the weight of their ancestors' deaths, the ones that were burnt and buried alive. They never tell the young Grishas belonging to the Little Palace that there is freedom outside of these cement walls. The Darkling's shelter is what they believe to be their own choice — not a consequence of manipulation and false promises of a greater future — whilst everywhere else is as cruel and cold as the Ice Court.
It was far easier to run away than reconcile with the dark shadows lurking beneath the wooden floors of the castle and decode the manipulation and deception. Far easier to pretend that the man she had given her weak mind, vulnerable heart to hadn't, in return, crushed it into tiny pieces of simple nothingness.
So she ran.
Now, that was a choice. One that landed her straight from a palace of luxury into the lap of a band of thieves and trickers; a crow club that was unlike anything she has seen before. After twenty years of living, Vera Bardot finally understood what it felt like to truly belong... amongst killers who only found purpose in money and glory.
Though infatuations rise at the oddest of times.

as usual, I'll preface this by saying vera bardot's character & plot belongs to me, and so does this layout. I'm not an idiot, I can see who steal my work w/o permission and try concealing it in their own fics — my readers will destroy you. of course, the shadow&bone franchise belongs to leigh bardugo (by the way! calling the palestine genocide a 'political issue' that you'd like to stay out of after writing the whole ravka-fjerda plot isn't cute. cherry-picking and distorting morals due to "misinfo" and other bs is cheap asf. )
anywho; welcome to which witch, named after my favourite Florence & The Machine song. I don't have the capability to watch any show w/o imagining an OC in that universe so here we go! I know what you're all thinking ... cara releasing yet another story even tho she's got a million other incomplete fics? sounds kinda stupid, u can boo. ps. the first act will be following netflix's shadow and bone season 1 version, and the second act will be the ice heist plot.
this story is not for you if you're hoping to see a female kaz brekker lol. vera is young, grew up in war-time, was easily manipulated in the past and works a lot with her heart. being emotional and badass are not mutually exclusive; and girlies ... u really let ur inner misogyny show by calling fem!mc's whiny and insecure whenever they display hints of vulnerability and innocence. so let's not x.
vera is ur typical sunshine sweetheart on the outer shell who has snuck into ketterdam shadows but she's a tough cookie to crack... and her inconsistency is truly alluring lol. there are mentions of toxic relationship dynamic, remember to not romanticise it! just bcs I write scenes that may have romance/chemistry elements doesn't mean it's intended for anything more than psychological unease. but I trust my readers to recognise manipulative lying assholes, of course <3
clearly, I'm one of those very cliché writers who cannot stop writing kids with mummy/daddy issues that are sorta the chosen one (harry potter who?) but it's a trope I hold dear to my heart so show some love to all my orphan babies (vera, astoria a. & scarlet c., ily babes). our band of thieves will be aged between 18-21. writing minors in the way the crows are canonically portrayed brings me a tad discomfort.
content warning. descriptions of violence and murder and taking out eyes, gore, depictions of ptsd, crude language, sexual assault, manipulation and toxic relationships theme, underage drinking, gambling & smoking, grooming, slight mentions of abuse, etc. I'm not aiming to completely eliminate traumas by the end of the book, six of crows is a great example of how characters can have development and come to terms with their past without having to 'be fixed'.
dedixated to lialacs who always lets me yap about my million ideas, mydarkflower (i'm obsessed w/ u) && julisrock greenharts coffinruinss -iaheys mydearladydisdain16 ryloths florence_not_italy lyraastarr duable midsummernightss warnvrswife
