Chapter 5
POV: Falconkit (4 Moons Old)
The fox's dark green eyes bored into mine and it just stared. Long enough for me to wonder if there was something else... more to the stunning animal than hunting and fighting. It's still so hard to explain, but as I stared into the eyes of that fox, I saw greater intelligence than I've seen in the smartest of cats. But, then again, I saw no pity for the tiny animal it was about to kill, me. So maybe I was wrong.
The fox took a step toward me. Then another. By then I'd just completely zoned out. I didn't notice the warriors rushing to attack the fox, or the worry glittering in Snowkit's eyes from the nursery. All I saw was the fox's two dark green eyes and it's steady paws as it trotted toward me, flinging warriors to the side. It seemed to be zoned out as well, it's eyes fixated on me as it took slow and steady steps forward, clearly in no hurry.
But the warriors didn't give up. They probably thought the fox was heading to the nursery, which I was decently close to. They were fighting harder than ever, especially Smokestar, who was determined to protect his mate, Roseclaw, and their unborn kits. Funny thing was, no one cared about the kit that was in the most danger. Namely; me. And I couldn't run, or I might startle the fox into striking immediately (not that I could run fast enough anyway). I could just wait until the fox came, and figure it out then.
The fox was close now. The warriors had given up on fighting the fox now and had divided themselves up to protect various parts of camp, like the nursery and medicine cat den.
The fox continued forward until it was within pouncing distance of me. Then, as the fox was preparing to pounce, Snowkit ran out the nursery and stood in front of me, acting as a shield. Roseclaw, being the closest to us, ran after Snowkit, shielding her from the attack. Then, suddenly, Smokestar actually cared about our lives now that his unborn kits were on the line. He pounced at the fox from it's side, effectively startling the fox enough for it to lose it's balance and collapse to the ground. The fox (thankfully), landed on the opposite side that Smokestar was on with a loud thud.
The warriors swarmed the fox, chasing it off. Snowkit let out a relieved laugh, but I was concerned. "Snowkit!" I exclaimed. "You've could've died!"
Snowkit shrugged it off. "I'd never stand by to watch you get hurt, Falconkit." She laughed. "Plus, as your mentor, it's my job to protect you."
Falconkit smiled. "Alright."
