Chapter Two

Aquamarine woke up in the river, but luckily she had gills so she didn't drown. The current pulled her along even when she wasn't trying to swim. She had scratches and cuts all along her body, and one of her wings hurt like mad. Her brain pounded inside her skull and made it hard to think.

"WATERLILY! LILY! WHERE ARE YOU?"

Her throat hurt and it felt like she hadn't drank for days. She waited. No one answered. She frantically turned in circles, trying to spot her sister.

Had it only been her thrown in? Was her sister back at home crying over her with her family?

She started to panic. She couldn't do this alone. "WATERLILY!!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. Still no answer. She started to cry.

She dove under the water, and let the current pull her farther. Something tapped the back of her leg. For a split second she thought it was her sister, but it was only a twig. She ripped it out of the water and threw it on the bank in frustration.

Behind her, she heard a gurgle.

She flipped around, but there was nothing to be seen on the water. But maybe...

She put her head under the current, and was much overjoyed to see a bundle of sky blue scales tumbling over the rocky bottom. "Waterlily!" She sighed in relief.

Aquamarine dug her talons into the muddy bottom and slowly made her way upstream. It was slow going, for the current was very fast. Fortunately, the still unconscious Waterlily tumbled into her arms after a while. She grabbed ahold of her sister by the shoulder and hip bone.

Slowly, she started to heave her to the shore.

Waterlily was older than her, and therefore bigger. Things started to fall apart when Aquamarine was halfway on the bank. Her wing started to hurt even more, and when she looked back, it flopped down at an awkward angle.

She winced, but kept moving. Waterlily was getting heavier, now that she was out of the water. Once they were on the shore, Aquamarine could clearly see a gash running down Waterlily's right cheek and a bruise above her left eye. She whimpered.

Aquamarine set down her sister's head in a comfortable position and lay down to nap. The overhead sun baked her scales and it felt good. Birds chirped in the branches above her head as a background soundtrack.

The light danced above her closed eyelids and eventually, Aquamarine fell asleep.
