A thousand capable for the stupid ruler
Jessica unlocked and locked her phone some fourteenth time as she sat down nervously opposite Liam. She was trying to distract herself by reminiscing about the graduation day, those were the pictures used as her wallpaper and lock-screen. Obviously, that did not help. The thought that this all, was a real, huge mistake on her part, and the temptation to run away, far away, was what defined her anxious state at the moment.
Liam sipped black tea, leaning against his chair, not a wrinkle of worry on his forehead. That was what his job was! But Jessica had never experienced work culture at a company, albeit a small internship, because it had credits. And to lead an entire team! Anyone with a sane mind would never allow it to happen.
"What are you scared of? I'd be there to back you up."
"So you'd whisper in my ear and tell me my dialogues?" Jessica hmphed in annoyance.
"Why, if you ask me to!" Liam winked at her. And it only pissed her off even more. Gulping the rest of the tea in one go, he put his cup on the table, pointed at his watch and gestured Jessica to follow him. "Let's go."
A car, that Liam had not previously used around her stood outside his lavish residence, accompanied by a man in a driver's attire.
"You aren't driving today?"
"You need to appear imposing, and qualified enough, in the eyes of people who'd be working with you, or under you." Liam explained, as he held her hand and led her inside the car. "This is a Rolls-Royce Phantom beauty." He commented on the car, which Jessica barely had any interest in. "It'll impose for you, since you seem doubtful of your own capabilities."
"Won't you be enough?"
Liam smiled and pressed a button that turned the preinstalled glass partition opaque, giving them some minutes of privacy before they'd face the actual storm.
"Today, Jessica, is all about you."
He embraced Jessica lovingly, placing his hand on her bosom and calmed her down.
Mr. McCallum's company was not even half as large as what Liam had as his smallest. But nonetheless, the way it functioned was intricately designed and functioned with norms and complete strictness. He had checked into it, the board of directors were all old, orthodox men that had been more than mere acquaintances to the old owners, Mr. and Mrs. McCallum. After the old woman's death, the major positions of the company were all absolutely occupied by men, with women being asked to handle tasks that the leaders deemed 'suitable' and 'light' enough for them.
Since the business was based on newer innovations on everyday-clothing, it was intuitively assumed that things were simple on the developing end, which was true to some extent. Difficulties were marketing and publicity, and to further establish a foothold in the real world race. That was one area where Mr. McCallum had failed to fare well and Liam firmly believed that if the issue be resolved, Móda and Co. would rise to the world's top within a really short period of time. He was majorly, if not entirely, involved with the profit the thing would reap.
As for Jessica, she had decided on being a 'happy-go-lucky' kind of woman, flowing like water, accepting whatever came her way and whatever was being offered to her (and those happened to be all good things, all hand picked for her.) She did get a few job offers from a handful of companies that promised a decent pay for the services Jessica would offer, but her heart had never been inclined to work as a paid employee. She had always thought being an employer was her calling. Although she knew her capabilities were limited as of then, and there was a lack of the path that would lead her to the vision which was conceived and born without planning, and prematurely, she now had the chance right in front of her. Opportunity had come knocking right at her door, quite literally and who was she to dismiss it and choose the harder way? So no matter how feart she was of the reality around her, she refused to run away.
When they arrived at their destination, which was a multi-story building, Jessica's mind came to a standstill. Liam unlocked the door to get out, but she pulled on his sleeves as her eyes begged him for something even she couldn't decipher. Maybe it was time, maybe it was waking her up and telling her it was all a bad dream. But neither of that happened.
"Relax-" Liam looked straight into her eyes.
"Am I wearing the right clothes? Do I look dumb?" Jessica quickly scanned her outfit, which consisted of a black pencil skirt and grey shirt with overcoat. Her locks fell straight down upto her waist, put in their place perfectly with a gel. Liam had especially prepared it all for her, and she understood that dressing in a certain way, makes you feel a certain way.
"You look professional. Just ready to take on the world. It will be fine. Even if it's not, we all gotta die at the end."
Jessica was unsure how that made her feel, but it was almost time for the meeting and they could waste no further time convincing her it was going to be fine. "We'd all die at the end. Yes." She repeated the slogan and got out of the car.
Inside, they were greeted by Mr. William, who worked as an assistant to Mr. McCallum. He led the way for them and introduced them to people he thought were worth introducing, skipping the rest of the crowd as he walked at a lightening speed. And Liam followed suit. He walked next to Jessica all the way, from the entrance, to the elevator, and up until the meeting room on the eleventh floor; and that was made possible by Jessica's attempt of flawlessly walking on pencil heels. Those had been her choice- Liam did not favor her comfort, but had suggested shoes that were easier to move in. Tall is imposing, after all. He held a stoic expression on his face while Jessica pretended to smile politely at whoever greeted her (which was everybody at the place) but you could still see some hints of nervousness on her face flash every now and then. People payed their regards to Liam, but quite blatantly focused more on her, reminding that she was in charge.
"And this right here-" Mr. Williams gestured to a wooden door, labelled Room A6, "is where people await their new leader." He smiled at Jessica. Liam looked at her, his face finally a little permissive.
They walked in through the door. And Jessica's feet tripped.
