The Girl That Got Away

This girl she beckoned me

From across the sea

Unfortunately

It wasn't meant to be

There was something about her

She was the one

But I never found out

Something blocked out our sun

It was fate that our paths crossed

But now I'm still feeling lost

I should have met her and shown

Then our love could have grown

I still look at her photograph

Mysterious grey eyes

Her beautiful face

Still gives me butterflies

We never did meet so

My heart still beats alone

Like a beacon it shines

For the one I call home

I never found out about her

Not who she is?

She'll remain a mystery

An unanswered question in a quiz

A thousand galloping horses couldn't pull us together

This girl was my destiny but there was no chance of us ever

Having a future and walking

Hand in hand in the park

So the street lamps still flicker

But there's no sparks now from our hearts

I'm alone on a bench reading poetry from a book

No one to cuddle in our secret inglenook

No one to share my milkshake in cafes

Only homeless men huddled in the shop doorways

Just me and my umbrella walking in the rain

My whispered words your heart they failed to attain

I now know what will happen

We were just not meant to be

This poem I wrote for you my love

My girl across the sea
