..Chapter 14 - Tangibly Together..
After the two of them got themselves into their room, Remus flopped onto the bed, closing his eyes and letting out a heavy sigh. "I'm exhausted," He muttered, "How cruel of you to make me walk so far." Despite his complaints, he turned over in the bed, reaching for the hotel phone. No amount of exhaustion was going to keep him from his husband.
Taking in a deep breath, he dialed Patton's phone number. It rang, and rang, and rang, before going to voicemail. He didn't like that at all. It prickled something in the back of his mind that he refused to acknowledge. Logan could be cruel, but he didn't know about Patton, did he? Remus shook his head, sometimes people just weren't near their phones. He had to be patient.
So he hung up and called again.
Once again, the phone rang and rang. Just as Remus was about to toss the phone at the wall, it was picked up. "Hello, this is Patton." There was a quiet trepidation in Patton's voice, which meant he had been screening calls. That's good, he was being safe.
"Patton," He let out a sigh, "It's Remus, long story, but I'm safe now, is Jan-Jan there?"
"Remus, oh thank goodness you are okay, what happened?"
"Remus? Give me the phone." There was a bit of shuffling before Janus was on the phone once again.
"You absolute dumbass, what happened? Are you okay? You didn't get hurt did you?" Janus winced as he shifted.
"The phone died. No, I didn't get hurt, but did you?" He asked, pulling the phone closer to his face as if that could bring him closer to Janus.
"I'll be fine."
"You're a liar."
"That wasn't a lie, I will be fine."
Remus pouted, "I want to know what happened, but seeing you is more important. I'm at a hotel, we escaped and dumped the car and phone."
"Escaped?! What happened? Where are you?"
He filled Janus in on what happened, wiggling his toes a bit. He was rather nonchalant about the fact that they had been kidnapped and yet escaped fairly easily with his brother's help. He could tell that Janus was just barely holding back his tirade of concern.
"And we are at this small hotel just off the interstate." He began to give the address, hearing a sharp inhale. Maybe they were close.
"What room are you in?"
"Room 68, they wouldn't give us 69, do you know how rude that is?"
"Remus stay on the phone, I swear if you disconnect this time I will push you down the next set of stairs I find."
He chuckled, "I don't think landlines can die." He heard Janus' breathing, it was rough and heavy, like he was running, or speed walking at least. Where was he, was he trying to get back to the car?
His thoughts were interrupted by a loud rapping on their door. "Remus, that's me, let me in, please, but don't hang up the phone."
He hesitated, looking at Roman before he bolted to the door, leaving the phone hanging off its holder. There was only the slightest hesitation as his hand hovered over the door handle. He was terrified it was a trick but it was worth the risk. He threw the door open, looking at the man in front of him, both of their eyes shining with tears.
They threw themselves into each other's arms, Janus dropping the phone out of his surprise. "You're here, you're really here." He muttered, holding his husband closely. "I'm never going to let go of you again. You dumb ass, this is why we don't keep secrets."
Remus let out a long shuddering breath, nuzzling his face in Janus' neck. "I- Same, I won't let go again Jannie, I'm sorry. I was trying to protect you. No more secrets."
"I know moonbeam." Janus hugged him tighter. He winced but refused to let go. Janus was hurt; Remus would have to find out why later. For now, he didn't want to let go.
Neither knew how long it was as they held each other, rocking back and forth a bit. They reveled in each other's touch before hearing something else clear their throat.
"I'm gonna go and give you two some space," Roman said, feeling awkward sitting with the two of them. They stood in the door, otherwise, he would have slipped out without much fuss.
"Sorry, maybe we should go back to our room."
"Our room?" Remus asked.
"Patton and his friend, the three of us had to stop for the night. We were tired from a day of chasing you. Plus the car crash."
"Car crash?!"
"Later," Janus soothed his hair gently. "We are in room 47, I can walk you there?"
"Um... yeah, I would very much appreciate that. I doubt that my presence is going to be specifically appreciated."
Janus nodded, wrapping an arm around Remus' waist to lead him out. Remus didn't mind at all. He was just as serious about not letting Janus out of his sight again. He didn't even want to let go when Janus went to pick up Patton's phone, his fingers wanted to curl tighter around him, but soon his husband was in his arms once again. They walked in a silence that was soaked in a desperate plea. Remus was able to ignore it because the prayer was something shared between him and Janus.
Roman, on the other hand, felt as if he was drowning in it. He knew he had made the right choice helping his brother get out, but something felt deeply wrong. He couldn't put his finger on it, maybe it was how easy it was for them to leave the compound, or maybe it was the fact that Logan hadn't been in the office when they left.
As his brother's husband, his brother-in-law, wow, that was a weird concept to wrap his mind around, put his key into the door, and opened it, Roman was assaulted with a different conundrum.
"Virgil." He whispered, looking at one of the two men sitting in the room talking.
"Hey, Princey," He smirked, but there was a nervousness in the curl of his lips.
"You're alive?"
"Surprise."
"But, if you're alive...." Roman was reeling as he went to sit down. He had never questioned that Logan had taken out Virgil the same way he had taken out their parents. Logan was cold and calculating; he always did what he thought was best for the family; he was heartless.
He wasn't.
The proof was sitting right in front of him.
"Wait, Ro, why are you here?"
He sat down on the bed, beginning to explain everything from his perspective, starting with Logan's fervent quest to get Remus back, ending with the fight that led to their escape. He was so focused on his hands and reliving his own experience that he didn't take a look at Virgil until he was done with his story. It was a surprise to see the man's face had lost all of its color.
"He just let you go? Just like that?"
"Yeah, he probably had some plan so we should move soon."
"No."
"What?"
"No! You... I love you, but you are a dumb ass, you always have been." Virgil was upon his feet, already trying to grab all of his things. "Where did you leave the car?"
"Down the road."
"Good, you were always shit at getting rid of cars. Give me the keys."
"What?"
Virgil let out an exasperated sigh. "Your brother is about to do something that borders on the imbecile, and I'm going to try to get to him before he does it. I'm leaving you my car so the four of you can get out of here."
"Leave him," Remus muttered, "If he wants to do something stupid, that's on him. He deserves it." The words came out as a light hiss as his hand tightened around Janus'.
"I..." Virgil looked over to Remus, his face softening as he walked over and hugged his old friend. "I can't let him do that. I made him a promise."
"You don't have to be bound to that." Roman said, "We-we could find a way to leave all of this behind Virgil."
"As much as I would love that, I've tried," he rubbed the engagement ring that he had put back on earlier. "Sometimes, no matter how much you want a fresh start, your past has too much of a hold. I've thought about him every day since I left. I genuinely don't think I could give up on him." He squared his shoulders, holding a hand out to Roman, "Now, give me the key."
Roman pouted but tossed Virgil the key, watching as he smiled a soft sad smile. "Thanks, sorry Pat, I have to go."
Patton bit his lip, the two making eye contact and having a conversation that none of the others were privy to. "As long as you are happy."
Virgil nodded slowly, walking towards the door. "I'm hoping I will be," With that, he hurried off, leaving the rest behind.
AN: This chapter felt a lot shorter than it actually is. Anyway, love you all!
