Chapter 83: Unexpected Kindness and Transmitted Diseases

Beth's POV

The flashes from the phones start to blink rapidly in the dusky evening as we approach them.

Shit, they're quite bright too.

Harry releases my hand as we walk and my heart feels like it's in my throat when for a moment I think he's going to leave me until the same hand moves to sit firmly around my shoulder, pulling me protectively into his side.

Some of the younger girls start to squeal Harrys name in excitement as we near the entrance and there are a couple of security guards who try their best to gently create a path for us, pushing the girls into two groups.

The squeals get louder however I notice some of the older girls shushing the younger ones.

Bless them.

"Stand back!" one guard says, "let them through!"

Harry smiles at the crowd and offers them a polite wave as we reach them and attempt to walk through the throng, the opening so narrow that Harry is forced to let go of me and grab me by the hand again.

The doors open automatically and I let go of the breath I didn't even realise I was holding in.

"Beth?" somebody calls my name and Harry is already inside the emergency department when I feel someone pull at my other arm, breaking my connection with Harry.

Adrenaline shoots through my body as I turn around, my heart now accelerating as the fight or flight mode begins to kick in.

"I'm sorry to hear about your daughter," a blonde girl says to me, "I hope you don't mind but I brought this for her."

She holds up a small teddy bear for me to take.

Oh, my.

I gingerly take the small bear from her before some other girl's hand me more gift bags and presents to take.

"Thank you," I reply, "how did you know though?"

"It's all over Twitter and Tumblr," another girl says.

"Yeah, someone is putting it out there that works here," I turn my attention fully on the girls.

"Can you show me please?" I ask.

Fingers are instantly tapping on phones before they lift them up to show me.

And the familiar flash of red hair is right in amongst it all.

I shake my head in disgust, my lips set in a thin line.

"Will you or Harry let us know when she's awake and feeling better?" the blonde girl asks me, "just so we know she's okay?"

"You all want to know that?" I ask curiously.

"Yes," a few of them chorus.

"If she's special to Harry, then she's special to us," the girl kindly insists.

Several girls nod their heads in agreement and each of them is smiling at me, the occasional flash from a phone, but they all seem genuine in their concern for my daughter.

"I'll make sure Harry tweets something, okay?" I reply, "thank you for all of this," I look down at the gifts I'm holding, "it's very generous of you all," I give them a grateful smile before I turn around and walk inside to a waiting Harry, who gives them another wave and then decides to blow them a kiss which promptly causes them to visibly swoon as they frantically wave back.

"What have you got there?" Harry asks as he begins to take some of the plush toys from me.

"Yeah...about that..." I begin, overwhelmed by his fans' kindness, but not at how they appear to have found out, "your fans brought them for Chloe."

"I do have some lovely fans," Harry agrees.

"Yes, I promised you would tweet them when she wakes up," I tell him as we begin to place the plush toys in the gift bags, making them easier to carry.

"Really?" Harry stops and looks at me, "you're happy for me to do that?"

"I think so, I mean, they were so lovely just now," I reply, "look at all these gifts, it's amazing," I hold up the bags.

Their generosity has made me smile and I was already feeling positive before we left to come here and I'm feeling the love even more so now.

"Okay then love," Harry takes the bags out of my hands and we head over to the reception area to be let through.

We stand at the window for a couple of moments, waiting for the receptionist to finish her call on the phone.

She finally hangs the phone up and looks up and her eyes widen as she lets out a gasp.

Not again.

"Fuck me," I let slip.

Harry's head snaps towards me and I mouth the word 'sorry' to him.

It just kinda slipped out.

"You're Harry Styles!" she squeaks.

Well at least she has a voice.

"Yes," Harry smiles, "we're here to visit..."

"Gosh I'm such a fan!" she gushes.

Aren't they all?

"Excuse me sweetheart," I interrupt as I'd like to get back into Chloe's room sometime this year.  Today would be good, "can you let us in to see my daughter please?"

"Sure," she stares at Harry with a dreamy smile on her face, "wow...your eyes really are green, aren't they?"

Einstein right here folks.

"Yes they are," I answer for him, "now could you please press your little button that unlocks that door?"
"Mmmm..." she murmurs in agreement still looking at Harry, "oh you were amazing in the Perfect video, I mean, I was literally shook when I saw it!"

Okay.

Right now, I'm perfectly happy to leave him here and go in alone if it'll get me there any quicker.

"Tell me," she lowers her voice in a conspirator-like whisper, "is that song really about Tay-"

"Harry has herpes," I blurt out.

"What?" she looks at me, her face full of shock.

"What?" Harry says, looking equally horrified.

"Sweetheart," I lean forward, "I need you to press your button so I can go through and see my daughter please," I repeat while smiling sweetly.

"Oh," she says with a slight frown as she looks from me to Harry and back to me.

"I do not have herpes," Harry whispers quite indignantly.

I feel slightly guilty but I don't have all bloody day and he wasn't really being helpful either.

"Alright, you don't," I say to Harry, "but I had to get her attention somehow," I explain as I look back at the young girl who now slowly nods her head in understanding.

Harry scoffs and I ignore him.

Okay, I try to not laugh.

"And who do I see about hospital PR?" I ask, still smiling at her.

"Well I can help you with that!" she perks up considerably, glancing at Harry again.

I'm starting to feel the need to stab her eye out with a fork.

Jealous much Beth?

No, I'm not.

She's just over-focussing where she shouldn't be.

Is that even a word?

"So you can help me with a complaint I'd like to lodge regarding a staff member here leaking confidential details to the public?" I ask, watching the smile slowly fall from her face.

"Oh...uh...no..." she says, "but I'll be happy to have someone with more experience help you with that."

"Thank you, I appreciate that," I say and I sincerely mean it, "button please sweetheart."

"Oh!' she jumps up from her chair, "of course."

I head over to the door and wait for the click.

"I can't believe you said that!"  Harry whispers behind me.

The door clicks and I push it open, holding it for Harry to follow me.

"Well I was hard pressed trying to get her attention Harry," I say, "and you weren't helping matters either."

"What do you mean?" he asks.

"You were clearly basking in her adoration Harry, which is fine," I add, because it truly is, "I just wanted to get in here."

His bottom lip pooches out and a frown graces his beautiful features.

"Well did you have to tell her I have an STD?" he lowers his voice to a whisper.

"And did I not clarify that so the precious love knew I was kidding?" I retort causing Harry to stop.

"You were jealous," he says.

"Was not," I roll my eyes.

"You were so," he smirks.

Bastard.

"I was not," I repeat, crossing my arms, "I just had more important places to be rather than watching a re-enactment of the love scene from Romeo and Juliet out there!" I gesture from the direction we came from.

"Oh love," he smiles and cuddles up to me from behind as I start to walk off on him.

"Don't touch me," I playfully scoff at him.

He places several sloppy, loud kisses in the crook of my neck causing me to wriggle madly as they tickle.

"Love you," he whispers.

"Yeah, yeah," I eye him sideways as we finally reach Chloe's room, the light-hearted banter quickly subsiding.

Even though Chloe is expected to be fine, until I finally see her open her eyes and hear her speak to me, will I truly be able to fully relax.

"She's going to be fine remember?" Harry says as the arm around me squeezes me tightly.

"I know," I reply, nodding.

"Do you want to go in by yourself first love?" he asks.

I open my mouth to say 'yes' but end up shaking my head 'no.'

I don't know.

"Go on," he gently urges me as he kisses my cheek, "I'll be here when you're ready."

"Okay," I nod, my bottom lip now pulled between my teeth.

Harry walks over and sits down on one of the waiting room chairs and pulls out his phone.

I turn the handle and walk in, only taking a couple of steps before I see her bed.

'Harry!" I call out, trying to remain calm.

Within seconds he's out of the chair and by my side, following my gaze.

Chloe is sleeping peacefully, free from the breathing equipment to help her, almost everything is gone, save for the one machine monitoring her heart.

"But I thought..." Harry trails off as he follows me inside.

"I know," I nod my head in agreement, knowing they weren't going to remove all this until tomorrow.

"Maybe they think she's going to wake up earlier than expected?" Harry suggests, excitement in his voice.

"I should find the doctor," I snap myself out of my dazed state.

But Harry grabs me by the arm and stops me.

"You sit," he says, "I'll go and find him."

I nod my head again.

"Okay," I agree, "thank you."

He places the bags down and pulls a chair from against the wall and sits it down next to Chloe's bed, gesturing for me to sit down and kisses the top of my head before leaving the room.

I gently grab hold of Chloe's hand and kiss the back of it before resting it against my cheek, my other hand reaching out to smooth her hair.

"I wish you'd hurry up and wake up so I can yell at you, you little bugger," I whisper, "well at least wake up so I can hug you first then yell at you," I chuckle to myself.

I keep smoothing her hair down which I think is more for my benefit right now than hers.

To keep me calm.

"It's been so quiet you know, without you around," I talk to her, "the boys are staying at Anne's house, I think they're secretly enjoying their time there...Harry's been wonderful though..." I trail off.

I let out a shaky breath as I feel myself tearing up at everything he's done.

Why am I fucking crying?

Everything's going to be fine and I'm being, to quote Chloe, a sookie la la poo poo head.

I stare at her, watching her chest rise and fall as she quietly breathes.

It's not until Harry places another chair next to me and sits down, do I realise he's returned.

"I spoke to the doctor briefly," he says, "he was going to come and see you but was called to an emergency," he explains, "but he said they took the tube out as her vitals were strong so he didn't see the point in keeping it in any longer."

They expect my baby to wake up sooner rather than later.

I don't say anything.

I can't.

Instead I lean my head down onto the bed, supported by my arm as I continue to watch her.

Harry starts to gently run his hand up and down my back in a comforting gesture.

"I'm glad you're here," I whisper.

"There's nowhere else I'd rather be," he replies and I can hear the smile in his voice without even looking at him.

I let out a sigh and smile to myself.

Harry pokes me on my back.

"That was a rather heavy sigh," he muses.

"I just..." I pause, "I like this bubble," I finish.

"Bubble?" he asks.

"Yeah," I reply, "this little bubble that I feel you and I are in," I turn my head around and face him, "that probably sounds stupid."

He smiles and shakes his head before he leans his head down onto the bed so he's close, mirroring me.

"So this bubble," he begins, "is it a good place?"

I nod.

"Why?" he asks.

"I feel safe," I tell him honestly, "and...it's just you, you're the bubble," and I try not to let it but my smile falters just a little.

"What?" he frowns slightly, his hand on my back again.

"I try not to think about it, but it has to pop eventually doesn't it?" I whisper.

"Only if you want it to," he whispers back, "cause I know I certainly don't, I won't...I won't let it."

I smile at him because he's so sincere and heartfelt and I want to believe him so badly.

I want to believe in us so badly.

But I have to eventually return home and I would understand if he forgot about me and moved on.

"I promised that I'd never let you fall and I meant it Beth," he whispers, "besides," he adds as his hand reaches up to cradle the back of my neck, "if you fall, it'll be because I push you off your feet so I could catch you."

I don't know whether to laugh at the thought of him actually pushing me over, or cry at the sentiment behind what he's trying to say in words.

Instead I lean closer and kiss him gently on the lips.

I go to pull away but he tightens his grip on my neck and holds me there a little bit longer until he finally pulls away from me.

Now we're just staring at each other with silly grins on our faces as Harry's hand goes back to rubbing my back.

I yawn and my eyes flutter closed but I open them again and keep myself focused on his green eyes and his hand is so comforting and relaxing on my back that I decide to just close them for a minute.

~~~~~~
Something nudges me in the head and I jolt awake and sit up.
Harry and I have both fallen asleep and it's then I decide he must have accidentally tapped me on the head with his hand in his sleep.
I gently shake Harry by the shoulder and wake him up.
"Wha...what?" he opens his eyes and looks over at Chloe who is still sound asleep, "did we fall asleep?" he asks me, his voice raspy and low.
"We did," I rub my eyes to wake up before I stand, stretching my arms up, "I need some water," I tell him, my mouth feeling dry, "I'm gonna go for a walk and get us some."
"Do you want me to come with you?" he asks.
"No, stay here Harry," I reply.
"Good," he smirks, laying his head back down on the bed, "I was comfy anyway."
I roll my eyes at him before walking out the door and begin searching for a vending machine.
It takes me a couple of minutes before I finally locate one and I realise that in my half-asleep daze, I left my purse back in Chloe's room.
I shake my head at myself as I walk back to her room.
Just as I reach the door, I can hear voices coming from inside.
"No love," I hear Harry say, "well, she might be just a little, but she's going to be more relived to see you're awake."
What?
My heart is in my throat and my body suddenly feels frozen to the spot.
"So she's not mad at you though Harry?" I hear another voice.
Her voice.
"Well she was at first, but I understand why," he replies, "she was scared and I was supposed to be looking after you, but she's not mad at me anymore," he tells Chloe.
I'm sorry I got you into trouble Harry," she says.
I slowly push the door open and see Harry sitting up on the bed, his arms wrapped around my daughter as she cuddles into him.
And my baby is wide awake looking up at him, and he down at her.
