10.)
"Oh dear, that's...a lot of snow."
"Yeah, no shit."
Virgil's deadpan was laced with an anxious tone that Emile recognized almost immediately. He gave his friend a goofy smile. "It's alright! Katara and Sokka had to deal with way worse when living in the water nation!"
"We're not cartoons, Picani!" Virgil exclaimed, glaring at the large white puffs that fell from the sky.
Emile blinked, like he didn't understand. "Well, I'm sure we can do...something! We're near the city!"
"The city is an hour away! We're nearer to the State Park than we are to our homes." Virgil crossed his arms, shivering, even under his thick winter coat.
They were driving back from a day of winter hiking at a nearby State Park known for its natural beauty. It had been Logan's idea. And though the forecast warned of a blizzard, the group had decided it was worth the risk.
After all, Logan never suggested anything. He was always so reserved, and usually only tagged along with the others without opinion. If Logan showed interest in something, the group would be sure to indulge him just to try and make him peek out of his shell.
Of course, that always got them into situations like this one.
Emile didn't stop driving in fear that the car might not move afterwards. The snow was about two feet deep already and the empty road they traveled down wound through a dark forest. Getting stuck in the middle of nowhere was not ideal.
Emile glanced back at Remy and Remus, who sat in the back seat. Remy was fast asleep (even though it was only 6pm) and Remus was jamming out to music on his headphones. The chaos was normal for him, he was alright with it.
Roman, Patton, Logan and Janus were right behind them in Janus's black van. It was more room-y so they all decided it was probably better for the kids to ride in it. Not that they caused any trouble, but it made the adults feel responsible to make such a decision.
Emile looked back at the road in front of him. He had to admit, even he was starting to get a little nervous. They had no way to get any help and the storm just seemed to be getting worse.
It was getting so bad, in fact, that a minute later, Emile's car lurched forward and growled to a stop. Virgil cursed with vehemence, gripping the arms on of his seat until his knuckles were white.
Remy snorted awake at the violent movement and shook his head to try and clear it. "Uh, wha-what happened? Whywestop?" He slurred, rubbing his eyes under his shades. Emile found that cool about him, he was like a cartoon character! Even if it was inconvenient, Remy still wore his trademark accessories.
"The car broke down." Emile squeaked, smiling shakily. Definitely not ideal at all. He was still recovering from the spike of panic that had hit him when the car stopped.
"Whaaat?" Remus whined. He'd taken off his headphones and was frowning out the window. "That sucks! How are we gonna get home?"
Emile didn't have an answer, and from the looks of it, neither did Virgil. Remy, however, seemed to still be registering something. Emile watched as something dawned on him and wondered what it was.
Janus's van pulled up next to them and stopped. It was bigger, sturdier, and much more equipped than Emile's car, so it probably wouldn't get stuck.
The occupants of the superior automobile quickly dismounted and trudged through the snow until they reached them. By the time the others had arrived, Emile, Remy, Remus and Virgil were already out and surveying the damage.
"Are you all okay?" Janus asked, leading the others. He had a long, yellow scarf looped around his neck and covering half of his face but his concerned eyes were still visible.
Emile sighed, adjusting his pastel pink snow coat. "Yeah, there's no way the car is moving, though. It's completely stuck."
"I knew something like this was gonna happen." Virgil grumbled. For once, no one disproved his negativity.
"It's not safe to keep driving." Janus declared. His brow was furrowed worriedly. "My car is good in harsh weather but if the snow gets deeper I can't guarantee it won't get stuck. We should find shelter nearby and stay the night."
"What?!" Everyone turned to see a pale Roman. Patton was beside him, bundled up and holding his father's hand. "We have to get back! I have work tomorrow and my boss is going to freak out if I don't show up!"
Emile frowned a bit. He'd noticed Roman had been overworking, but talk of this boss was really starting to concern him. "This is an emergency, it's not like you're choosing to be stuck in the middle of the woods. So you're not doing anything wrong by putting yourself and your family's current needs before those of your boss." Emile reasoned, trying not to let his concern show too much.
Roman was about to reply when Remus stepped in, "He's right. C'mon, Ro, Patton and Logan could catch a cold."
After a beat, Roman sighed. The distress melted away as he seemed to realize their situation. He looked down at his son and then over at his basically-nephew. The tension in his shoulders eased a bit."Yeah...yeah you guys are right. Sorry." He said, sounding slightly ashamed.
"You don't need to apologize." Emile said gently, giving his friend a reassuring smile.
"Okay, this is all well and great, but where are we going to stay? I don't think I've seen a house since we left the city!" Virgil said urgently. He had a hand on Logan's shoulder. The young boy didn't look too happy with it, but let it happen anyway.
The group pondered in silence, all of them growing more and more concerned. Patton shivered but stayed quiet, a small smile masking his discomfort. Emile noticed and frowned.
Before he could comment anything, somebody sighed heavily. The kind of sigh that comes from someone filled to the brim with dread. Everyone turned their attention to Remy.
"I have an idea, but I don't like it." He said reluctantly.
"Anything will do." Janus insisted, glancing at Patton and Logan.
Remy noticed and looked at the children as well. After a moment, he groaned. "Ughhhhhhh, fiiiiine!"
He took off his shades and rubbed his eyes. "Who wants to meet my moms?"
~~~~~~~~~~~
The house was the exact definition of "cozy."
It was a classic wooden cabin surrounded by pine trees and was located near a small, frozen stream.
"Woah." Emile said, in awe of the warm household. "Remy, you're moms have such a cute house!"
Roman smilled fondly. He'd obviously met Remy's moms before, "Those are Coletté's floral curtains, right? She's had those forever!"
"Yeah, they were my Gram's. I'm pretty sure my Maman would actually murder someone for touching those curtains." Remy replied. He had loosened up a bit on the drive to the nearby cabin.
Apparently, Remy's moms had land in the area. Remy hadn't said why, but Emile suspected it was so they could be near their son.
"It looks sturdy enough." Logan commented, "It should make a decent shelter from the storm."
"I agree." Janus said, parking the car in the driveway. Or, at least, what they thought was the driveway. Everything was completely blanketed in heavy snow.
Colorful Christmas lights lined the roof and windows. A light-up Santa's sleigh and penguins shone brightly on top of the house. It reminded Emile of a picture perfect childhood home. The kind he'd always wished for, especially during the holidays.
The scent of baking gingerbread wafted out of the house along with the rich smell of brewing hot chocolate.
The group quickly got out of the cramped car. As they did so, the cabin's door opened and a small, thin woman with bright green eyes and a daring smile stepped out to meet them.
"Remy, mon amour!" She exclaimed, holding out her arms to Remy and jogging over. She was only wearing a red, flannel dress and black stockings, but she plunged knee-deep into snow all the same.
"Maman, are you ins-" Remy began, but was quickly cut off when the small lady gave him a rib-cracking hug. Emile was surprised her small body could contain that much force.
Remy reluctantly returned the hug, blushing a bit out of apparent embarrassment. Emile couldn't really understand why, but the sweet scene made him smile.
"Oh, mon fils, I'm so glad you're home!" The lady beamed, her arms still gripping her son's. She had a heavy French accent and the kind of voice that was smooth enough to charm a snake and/or read an audiobook.
Remy smiled back sheepishly. "Yeah. I-er-we were in the area and decided to pay a visit. Right, guys?" He looked at the others, prompting them to save him.
The woman seemed to notice the others for the first time and her eyes settled in the first familiar face. "Roman, darling! It's so good to see you as well. It had been too long."
"Hello, Coletté, looking lovely as always." Roman replied smoothly, bowing slightly and tipping an imaginary hat playfully. His expression was fond, as if Remy's Maman were his own blood.
"Ah, still so charming. My aging heart can hardly withstand it." Coletté grinned and pretended to swoon.
"Alright, alright." Remy interjected, though he sounded amused. "Maman, you're gonna get sick if we stay out here any longer, we should get inside."
"Oh, yes! Eta will be so happy to see you!" Coletté said, her smile glowing brighter than any of the decorations.
She grabbed Remy by the hand and pulled him towards the house, motioning excitedly at the rest. "Please, come in! All my bébé's friends are our honorary children!"
Remus snorted and Roman elbowed him in the ribs. With that, the small group followed Coletté and Remy into the Chandra residence.
~~~~~~~
"Mon chéri! It's him, I told you! He's home!" Coletté exclaimed as Janus shut the door behind all of them.
There was some bustling heard from what appeared to be the kitchen. From a room to the right, a plump woman who was a good foot taller than Coletté emerged wearing red, polka-dotted oven mitts. "Remy?"
"Hey Maan,"
The woman quickly walked over and threw her arms around him. "Aw, welcome home, pumpkin!"
When Remy pulled away, Coletté moved next to his Maan and put an arm around her waist, leaning her head on her shoulder.
The other woman smiled at the others. "And other guests as well! Welcome."
She looked at Remy expectantly, "Are you going to introduce us, pumpkin?"
Remy seemed flustered but cleared his throat and visibly tried to come off as suave. "Uh, yeah. Moms, this is Janus Dolion, Virgil Moretti, his little brother Logan Moretti, Roman's son Patton and Emile Picani." He paused for a second and then seemed to remember something. "Oh, and of course, you know Roman and his twin Remus."
Remus smirked and shot a peace sign at the two women. Virgil was a lot more quiet now that there were other people but he opted for a polite smile and a wave.
Janus stepped forward and held out his gloved hand, having pulled down his scarf so his naturally sly smile was visible. "It's lovely to meet you, I've heard such great things about you from your son."
"How sweet!" Remy's Maan said, glancing over at her son lovingly as she shook Janus' hand.
It was a lie, of course. None of the members of the group were surprised, though. Janus was an impulsive liar, it didn't matter that Remy had barely uttered a word about his moms.
Emile followed after, shaking their hands and giving them his best smile. "Wonderful to meet you!"
"Likewise!"
Remy's Maan gave him another expectant look and he sighed. "Yeah, ok. Guys, these are my moms. My Maman is Coletté Chandra and my Maan is Eta Chandra. Now everyone's acquainted."
"Be nice, Remy." Eta chided. Then she beamed, "All of you, please come into the living room, I just finished fixing up some gingerbread and cocoa."
There was a small gasp before a young voice cheered, "Yay! I love chocolate."
Of course, it was Patton, smiling widely. Emile held back an "awwwww." The kiddo really was adorable.
"Aw, well come on ma chérie! Let's get you some treats, hmm?" Coletté cooed, holding out her hand and taking Patton's.
Eta crouched so she was on Logan's level and smiled warmly. "Do you want some too, darling?"
Virgil tensed. Logan's face stayed neutral, but he replied politely, "I suppose that even though so much sugar would not be the healthiest choice, I cannot refuse. Judging by our lack of dinner, any nutrients would do."
Eta seemed surprised for a moment at Logan's mature way of speaking. Emile remembered feeling the same way the first time he'd met the kid.
He was definitely different. But once you spent enough time with him, it was clear that Logan was just a kid hiding under layers upon layers of neutrality and intelligence.
Or maybe that was just clear to Emile. After all, he was a therapist.
Eta smiled warmly all the same, going along with Logan's strange personality. "Of course dear! Though, I have been experimenting with healthier recipes recently to try and find the perfect one. Would you like to see my notebook while you eat?"
Logan seemed intrigued, he nodded and let Eta guide him towards the kitchen, one gentle hand on his back. Emile felt his heart warm a bit. It wasn't just any person who could accept someone for who they are on the spot. Eta seemed like a nice woman.
A quick glance over at Virgil confirmed a relieved, fond smile. The expression was rare on their anxious friend but it was good to see him comfortable around other people. Emile smiled at that.
But Remy still looked on edge. He seemed nervous for some reason that Emile couldn't make out.
But he knew questioning wouldn't do any good. Instead, he hung back with Remy while the others went ahead, following Eta. He glanced over and put a comforting hand on his shoulder.
Remy looked surprised, "What?" He said, a bit sharply. Then he flinched at his own tone, instantly regretting it. "I mean...uh...."
Emile brushed it off, "It's alright, I know you didn't mean it to come out like that." He tilted his head, "I just wanted to say that you're gonna be okay."
Remy's eyes widened. He looked away, a forced grin on his face. "Ok, now I'm really confused. What're you trying to say here, babe?"
"I mean that whatever's bothering you, you're gonna be fine. The whole crew is here, we won't let anything bad happen, ok?" Emile reassured, keeping his voice level and his expression gentle but not condescending.
Roman and Remy shared the same issue of being too prideful. If you made it seem like you were trying to help them, they would immediately close off, sometimes acting cruel or unlikeable in order to remain isolated in their feelings. Unfortunately for them, Emile had caught on.
They were just like Finn from Adventure time. They shut everything in tight to try and be the hero or to prove themselves. The only way to help them was to be there.
So when Remy studied his face, Emile didn't stare back too intensely at his coffee brown eyes, even though it was tempting. Instead, he offered a casual smile.
After a long moment, Remy smirked back. "Yeah, ok Picani. I'll try to relax."
Emile beamed, exhaling a bit in dramatic relief in an attempt to make Remy's smirk stay. It worked. "Great, I was getting a bit worried there that our Remy had been replaced with some brooding shapeshifter, like in Trollhunters. Now let's go get some gingerbread, I'm starving!"
Remy grinned, following Emile into the kitchen and looking better than before. Emile couldn't help but blush.

I will be back with part 2 soon!
