Chapter 16
Foxspirit was woken.
"Go back to sleep, Runningsun." She murmured.
"No, you don't understand! Listen!" The yellow tom hissed.
Foxspirit's ears pricked up. There was ragged breathing outside. Foxspirit scrambled to her paws.
"Who is it? WindClan? ShadowClan?"
"They don't have a smell." A brown and cream tom meowed.
Foxspirit hadn't noticed that the senior warrior was awake. She opened her mouth to scent the air.
"You're right, Molewhisker!" Her voice was filled with fear.
"Jump 'em on three." Runningsun ordered.
Foxspirit crouched inside the den.
"One...two...three!"
Foxspirit leaped out of the den with a yowl, that was cut off by her strangled cry.
The cats were made of black mist.
And they had no face.
-------------------------
I stood atop a tree, zombies growling below.
Oh God, what have I done?
I'm going to find Rory.
I shouldn't have left.
Rory is my first priority.
Maybe I could go back later?
I shook my head, trying to clear it. No effect.
An arrow whizzed past my face.
I cursed under my breath. My mind tried to make me feel better.
By reminding me of the song I was listening to the day I came here. Some Nights, by Fun.
Some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luck.
I sidestepped and an arrow went past.
Some nights I call it a draw.
Some nights I wish that my lips could build a castle.
Some nights I wish they'd fall off.
But I still wake up.
I still see your ghost.
Oh lord,
I'm still not sure what I stand for.
I heard an arrow coming, but I didn't see it until it hit me.
I cursed under my breath and hissed in pain. The arrow dissapeared within seconds.
"Minecraft logic." I muttered.
I listened for more arrows. No sound of one being shot at me.
Actually, I couldn't hear a skeleton either. Good.
Wait.
I couldn't hear any zombies.
Or spiders.
Or any monster.
Well, weird, but good.
And then I saw a green light.
Well...
It was a little block of green light. As wide and tall as an apple, just not apple shaped.
It floated in the air, and it rotated like an Ender Crystal.
"What is thaaaaaaaat?" I whispered.
I was talking to myself. Maybe I just wanted to hear someone talk.
I am a friend, little one.
I stared at the little block.
"Okay, I'm crazy." I decided.
No, maybe it is I who is crazy.
"You make no sense, little green block."
I repel the monsters, little one.
"I'm not little."
Of course not.
"Who do you- ugh, I'm going crazy."
I turned away from the block of light.
I can help you on the path to finding your friend.
That got my attention.
I whirled around to face the block. The voice was coming from it, I was sure. It floated closer until it was right in front of me.
But first, you must rest.
"Why should I trust you, mysterious block of light?" I asked.
Please, call me M.N.
"You have a name?"
Everything has a name.
"Right."
Rest.
I started to feel sleepy. I didn't know how. I had been very awake before...
I lay down on the grass.
I can find Rory tomorrow... I decided. Daylight makes stuff easier.
-------------------
These cats had no faces, yet they had teeth as sharp as a knife. Foxspirit clawed at one, and it jumped back. They didn't bleed, but they could still die and fade away.
"Cloudtail!"
Foxspirit turned towards the wail. She spotted the ginger and white she-cat, Brightheart, crouched beside a white tom with his throat covered in red, sticky blood.
Foxspirit yowled and ran towards the dying elder, but the leader of ThunderClan got there first.
The dark brown tabby looked at the tom, his eyes filled with grief. Cloudtail rasped words Foxspirit could not hear.
Foxspirit got bowled over by another mist cat.
----------------------------
I woke up, reminding myself of-
I sat up.
Relax, I am still here.
The green light floated right next to my face.
"Alright, so..." I paused.
I can show you the path to your friend.
"Yeah, that's what you said."
You think that you cannot make friends here.
"Are you a mind reader, M.N?"
I am all seeing, Aza Wild.
I flinched. This thing knew my last name.
As far as I knew, there were no last names in Minecraft, let alone Story Mode.
Follow.
M.N floated out and down, just above the ground. I jumped off of the tree and rolled, then jumped to my feet. Some things were easier here. Like swordplay. And jumping off trees.
"What are we following?" I asked. "An invisible yellow brick road?"
You are following me. I am following my knowledge of this world.
"Okay." It didn't make sense, but M.N was too cryptic for me to make sense of.
It was like my Reuben, in a sense.
I followed it through the woods. There were no clouds today.
My mind went off track. It was cool that I didn't even have to worry about my clothes any more. They were there, but if they got wet they wouldn't be uncomfortable. Minecraft logic.
And I got to wear my red hoodie every second of the day.
...
They others would be going to find Soren now.
You think you cannot make friends here. M.N started a conversation.
"I don't think they like me much, despite the fact I got them tickets and stuff." I explained.
You are wrong. Lukas liked you, wanted to be your friend. Jesse was caught up with Gabriel to interact with you much. Despite not talking to you, Olivia respected you.
"Really? Olivia respected me? For what?"
For being you.
I fell silent at that.
------------------
The mist cats were finally defeated.
Foxspirit gasped for breath. She felt hurt everywhere.
Frostwish stopped in front of her, green eyes filled with concern and something else.
"Come with me, I need to get that bleeding stopped." The white she-cat murmured.
Foxspirit followed Frostwish, feeling numb. Through all of her years reading Warrior Cats, she had never read something like this. Cats coming from the cat hell, the Dark Forest, sure, but cats made out of mist with no faces?
"What were those things?" Foxspirit asked as Frostwish came out of the medicine cat den with cobwebs.
"I don't know." Frostwish applied cobwebs to Foxspirit's wounds. "But the others will see thing like those."
The others. The other Clans, or the other people who had gone missing?
-----------------
We walked for hours, M.N and I.
I was bored. I needed conversation.
"Do you have a gender?" I asked to block of light in front of me.
Hm...sometimes.
M.N seemed like a female, it had a feminine voice.
Now, in this form, you could call me a female.
"Called it." I muttered.
A pig oinked nearby, and trotted away.
Suddenly, M.N stopped going forward. I frowned. Was this-
Run.
"What?"
You must run, now. Straight forward, don't stop.
"Why?"
I can't stop them.
I saw movement in the corner of my eye. A wolf? Had someone provoked it?
"Oh sh-"
Something knocked into me and bowled me over before I could draw my sword, but I could see my attacker.
I squealed.
It was a wolf made of black mist.
And it had no face.
