a message for you - tyler joseph's story

Feeling out of this world is normal. It's okay if you want a break from reality. I struggle with wanting to be done with this as well. Honestly, well, I think most of the population does. We think of the negative aspects of society, the government, you name it. Dealing with this, I look up to Tyler. When I'm in a bad state of mind and if I'm about to act on it, I turn to what Tyler has done.

In an interview with AltPress in 2016, Tyler mentions that in his teenage years, he was at a "low point" when he started questioning his purpose and battling with dark thoughts. Teenagehood is one of, if not THE most difficult time of your life. Your hormones are crawling up and down, you get happy spikes, and suddenly, you plummet down to rock bottom. Sometimes, it gets so bad to the point where you rely on antidepressants to hopefully get you out of that temporary headspace.

"I didn't know how to express what I was feeling, and music was the only thing that made sense to me. It felt like a way to organize the chaos in my mind." - AltPress (2016)

It's perfectly okay to want an escape. What's not okay is to act on it.

Tyler has made his music to help cope with his depression and anxiety, and he has said in an interview before that connecting with others who have the same struggles through his career has been most rewarding.

When you're trapped in the lowest of low emotions, it feels like there's no making your way out of it. Like you have just fallen into a ten foot hole, and there's nothing to dig your way out with. In Tyler's words, even if it seems like there's no hope, there's always hope.

"I've felt the weight of that darkness, and I know how hard it is to see the light. But there is hope. There's always hope." - Beats 1 Radio with Zane Lowe (2018)

He has explained that he wants his listeners to think about how they can honor their own life instead of glorifying its end.

So you, yes you, even in this dark, dark world, we can still try our best to focus on something that gives us purpose.

Take a moment to really think about what makes you happy.

Maybe it's writing.

Maybe it's music.

Maybe it's video games.

Whatever makes you truly happy, that's your purpose. Make something out of it. Find your purpose in that. Don't settle with something that tires you. Stay with something that builds you.

Look at Tyler, for example. He had struggled with depression all his life. He felt like there was no purpose in living. He has made a path to every dark corner of his mind. If he hadn't found his passion in music, he most likely wouldn't be here.

Find your passion.

Live in it just like Tyler did.

Try starting a journal, drawing, picking up an instrument, or maybe vlogging. Do something that feels like you. Start small, walk in baby steps with your passion. No one starts out perfect. Not even Tyler, even if you want to think he did. Your purpose doesn't have to be grand from the get-go.

Every journey is vastly different and unique to everyone. Even if some journeys are similar to others, it doesn't mean yours has to be the same. Make your journey about you.

Even if you feel alone in your journey of finding your purpose, that's completely normal. There are billions of people who have felt or are feeling the same way as you. There are also billions of people who are just like you. Who are looking for you. Just because you might not feel like you're good enough for someone doesn't mean that thought makes it true. In someone else's eyes, you are more than enough. In fact, you're perfect.

"I've had times where I've felt completely alone, like I wasn't good enough. Those feelings don't just disappear, but they don't define you either." - The Quietus (2013)

Never change yourself for someone. Never make someone change for you. I promise you, you'll find someone who fuels you and makes you the best version of yourself. Don't find yourself stuck with a group of people who discourage you or pull you down or keep you from growing. If you need to, it's perfectly okay to be alone for a little while when you're finding the people who suit you. Almost everyone has been alone for some time in their life. Even if it takes a long time, you will find your someone, and that someone will find you.

But while you're looking, work on yourself in the meantime. Don't let the search stop you from growing.

Tyler has encouraged his fans to use creativity as a tool to navigate difficult emotions, adding that it's okay to not have all the answers.

No one has all the answers. Not even Tyler. And that's okay.

In a BBC Radio 1 interview in 2019, he has said that the more he's spoken to people about him not having it all together has helped him realize that nobody does, and that's good because it's what makes us human.

"There's a vulnerability standing in front of a crowd and saying, 'I don't have it all together', but the more I've done that, the more I've realized that none of us do. That's what makes us human." - BBC Radio 1

The relationship he has with Josh Dun has been the source of his strength since the two of them have been able to support each other through both of their mental struggles. Keep in mind that Tyler and Josh met when they were 22 and 23 years old. They didn't have each other to support each other when they were younger. So if you don't have someone to support you yet, it's perfectly normal.

Normally, people in their teen years are all focused on school and their future while managing their own mental health, so it's more difficult for them to search for someone to boost them up in the process.

Even if the only person you have is you, that's enough. If your heart is still beating, that's enough. And that's all that matters.

Look at how far Tyler made it. He went from a teenage boy who thought he had no purpose, who was convinced he wouldn't make it far, to a father of three children and a wife. He's now famous, making millions, and has the most perfect fan base with the most compassionate people like you.

If you look up to Tyler, take this as your sign to keep going.

"You are not alone. There is a reason you're here tonight, a reason you've made it this far. Keep fighting, keep creating, keep being you. The world needs you."

You're the only one of you. And we need you.
